Hello all.  I just came across this forum and thought I'd join in the commiserating.  I just received my rejection notice from UNC and am awaiting to hear from UIC. ? Has anyone heard from them yet?

Hey,

Sorry about UNC. UIC said mid Marc-early April for decisions.

Hi. It is the same for me. I emailed the department to ask whether I am waitlisted/ rejected! I believe we will know in 24-48 hours by email/ portal.

It was the same for me too. It just updated and shows a rejection. Congratulations to everyone that's been accepted and good luck to the ones waitlisted!

Coming out of lurker status to say that for anyone who was waitlisted/not accepted at JH, it's definitely disappointing, but try again next year!

Last year I applied and was rejected - it was a major bummer. I spent the next 12 months getting more experience, picking up extra tasks at work to gain demonstrable skills, volunteering outside of work for PH-related organizations, generally beefing up the resume any way I could, and fine tuning my application essay. Re-applied this year and got in, and you can, too!

I have also received rejection from UNC but I was just accepted to Hopkins DrPH program. I am wonderfully thrilled. It took two years of applications and interviews but I did it! UIC will most likely delivery notice by end of the month!

No problem. I applied for the PhD program in Health, Behaviour and Society a.k.a. Social and Behavioural Sciences. I sincerely doubt that enough people are going to reject Hopkins in my department that the list will move up. I mean it's not impossible, miracles do happen, and they've never promised great funding which can be a barrier to admitted students who would otherwise want to accept, but I'm not hingeing my hopes and giving myself sleepless nights waiting to get off the waitlist. I'm already thinking about the Fall 2020 application cycle. Are you also waitlisted? What department/program?

You're already one step ahead of me because I'm driving myself crazy checking the forum and portal. But I too have accepted the very real possibility of not getting off the waitlist so I'm already looking for jobs that can add value and working on improving my apps. I was waitlisted for Population, Family and Reproductive Health and I feel there are very few of us who applied and are on this forum because nobody seems to know anything about this department. Which leads me to believe that everyone who got accepted will probably commit because it's a niche field. Thoughts?

No idea. They do have mega family planning/population health projects in all the key pop health hotspots around the world, making it THE PLACE to go for that. But again you never know. Since their funding isn't typically great, maybe people will go elsewhere, where they might have better offers. What I find odd, is that my waitlist decision is on the portal and they said they'd send an email in 24-48 hours which was maybe a month ago, and I've NEVER gotten that email from them, even after emailing them with questions about the waitlist. Try not to stress, it won't change anything. Focus on your B plan of improving your application,  and that way, if you do get off the waitlist, it's a lovely surprise and you're happy, and if not, you don't feel lost because you already have a plan.

Yep - just got the email too. I guess it is impossible to know our chances - probably just depends how many people go elsewhere instead of Hopkins...

I wish they had provided us with a waitlist rank so we would have a better idea of where we stand.

First Grad  Cafe post here... I wish I had known this community existed while I was applying.

Just received my waitlist notification for JH DrPH. Does anyone know much about the Environmental Health concentration, and generally how large it is relative to others in the program? Trying to get an idea of how likely it is that people will decline (I'm sure not very likely).

I have two acceptances, and one pending result from F2F interview -- I just need this last decision to come through so I can make my decision. Haha.

For those of us still waiting on an answer and trying to brace ourselves for another year before we can reapply, your response, Sarcasm and Coffee, may seem a bit insensitive ("Haha"). I'd just like to say that I sincerely wish you well in your decision process. The world of public health needs optimism and champions of hope. As a JHSPH MPH graduate, if you have been accepted to their DrPH program I fully believe you will be transformed by your global collegiate experience. The faculty there, many who have spent 4+ decades in the field, remain hopeful and inspiring. Sarcasm you will not find among them at JHSPH.

Wow, that is odd. Did you tell them you you still haven't received the email? Maybe it differs for each department but I received mine and it said they'll get back to me in the coming weeks. It's been three weeks now and I'm scared to even ask what my spot on the waitlist is. Could I ask what questions you emailed them about your waitlist? I've been delaying any correspondence lest they think I'm badgering them ?

Also, thank you so much for your encouragement about next year. Great to know someone else is in the exact same boat :)

Thanks to everyone who has been supportive on this thread. So far I have been rejected at Harvard and accepted at Hopkins (Implementation Science). I am waiting on Columbia. Best of luck to everyone as they make their decisions.

Would you mind sharing your stats? I'm hoping to apply for the Hopkins Implementation science program at some point. I have a co-workers whose application looks very similar to mine, that did not get in this year. So I'd love to see what kind of candidate is a good match for them.

Hi, yes, I did not apply to JHSPH -- I am thoroughly happy for everyone who did! I am a very optimistic and hopeful person, which is why I took several years between my MPH and DrPH to work in the field. I am stressed within myself to leave a position I love and I can see change happening every single day. I also sent my congratulations to all of the JHSPH hopefuls! I am happy for them. Outside of that, many of us (myself included) are still in the waiting game. We are allowed to be stressed. I do appreciate your take, however, as I am not trying to be insensitive. The whole point behind my user is everything can be read as sarcasm because we don't know personally know each other -- even if we are fueled by coffee and personality. I am not trying to get into anything with anyone on this thread, especially since we have been encouraging each other for months now.

I just told them that I'd seen the waitlist notification on the portal but never received the promised email explaining how it worked, and then I asked about how the waitlist works i.e. if it is ranked and if so, was it possible to find out my standing, what the typical chances were of transitioning from waitlist to an offer of admission, and when I could expect to get a final decision on my application.

At this point, I imagine the lot of us in the waitlist or even admitted camps are badgering away. There's probably no harm in asking. Maybe you could call them and leave less of a trace (?  ) that way...  I think working in admissions, they must be used to this time of year and all the questions. I'm still waiting for my email response so maybe I should pay the international rates and just call them as well.

To the poster above RE: Implementation Science, I know my application was being kicked between HPM-Quality/Safety and Implementation Science, and I ended up getting accepted to the HPM-Quality/Safety track (I called admissions today to ask where I ended up). I don't know if that's because IS was more competitive, or because I was a better fit for HPM-Q/S.

Is anyone else admitted to Hopkins DrPH for HPM - Quality/Safety?

I didn't find you to be pessimistic or insensitive and totally got the (nervous) "Haha" in your previous post.

I wanted to touch on this theme of optimism and hope and it being such a prized thing in public health. I'm in my 10th year post-MPH (I've been meaning to apply every year since like 2012). I've been working in a SBCC (social and behaviour change communication) job I adore (and also have dreaded leaving, adding to my procrastinating about applying since 2012.). All this to say, maybe it's just me,  I find the real world public health space a lot more cynical and pessimistic than the one that exists in Schools of Public Health (caveat I'm not American and work outside of America- maybe things are different if you have strong health systems, but I don't assume so). I find it often feels very 1 step forward, (being extremely generous) half a step back and that the MPH as a practical degree doesn't prepare you for the harsher realities (especially in social and behavioural areas) of what working in public health really is like especially as you grow in responsibility and get into the leadership and holistic management-y parts of it. I think optimism and hope are good and essential to finding fulfillment in your work, but I don't think they're to me the most important thing I'm looking for in a program or the markers of success- especially a practical program. I got a lot of hope and optimism and inspiration in my MPH. In a public health leadership degree like a DrPH, I'm looking for faculty with experience dealing with the realities of implementation and human centered research practices that aren't just for research sake but actually aim to develop resilience and improve the communities where they are carried out. That's why I applied to Hopkins- for those things. Because the struggle in the actual public health practice world is real and leadership within it is not easy and the problems are complex and don't always color within the lines that SPHs set. And if what you're bringing to the ring to face those challenges  as a leader is optimism and hope, it's easy to get crushed. I've rarely met people involved in public health practice who don't have a healthy dash of cynicism and side eye to spare, they just counter it with resilience and creative problem-solving and a can-do/must do attitude, and hopefully hope and optimism.

Then again, take me with a pinch of salt. I'm still only waitlisted and already focused on Application Cycle 2020. It is entirely possible I was missing a dash of optimism and hope.
