Btw. Heard back from Columbia regarding my inquiry. I emailed the Writing department but was redirected to the general Admissions Office of SOA. Very form answer - probably not helpful to anybody!

Here it is -
Thank you for applying to the School of the Arts. Applicants will receive an email from the selection committee about their status, including interviews, during the selection process. Final results will be emailed between mid March and April. Applications will remain open until final decisions are emailed out.

Well, it seems like it means that everything will be sent out by the end of March ?

I think that’s a reasonable reading! ?

tbh I’m already sensing the bureaucracy intrinsic to a larger program and institution... which I sensed from the start, even from their online info session. (sorry for the rant)

Completely understandable! I think there are always pros and cons with larger and smaller programs /: and it’ll be something we need to accept if we decide to go to a certain school in the end ?

I emailed them about 5 days ago, so they will probably get back to you after they respond to the people who emailed them earlier, but yes I meant to quote M-Lin's post about the response

Been absent as of late because I felt my turn was over, but now that I've finally gotten my Iowa rejection in the mail, I can officially say that it's rejections across the board this year.

On to the next!

Hope you have a fruitful year of writing ahead! best of luck in the next round!

Yes, for fiction! And thank you :)

Did they happen to say anything about how many people they’ve accepted so far and if decisions are still continuing for the next few days? ?

Seems CU is doing a slow rollout. I don't have access to Draft so I don't know what's been reported there though. My sense is that there may be fewer admits than normal bc of COVID deferrals last year and maybe this is why it has been so slow. They may also be trying to engage in yield protection and trying to sense whether their top picks are already committed elsewhere. Just speculating...

They did not. Anselise Chen called me, so all I know is that it's not a general admissions person making the phone calls. Sorry! Wish I had more info to give. But I truly think they are just making the calls or sending the emails when it's convenient for them--no rhyme or reason.

She called at 5pm, so end of workday

I was accepted in to Columbia for fiction last Saturday. I also posted to the draft. This is my only acceptance this season--unless I get in at UBoston, which I'm doubting. I was offered a scholarship of 20k, but I believe that is my only funding offer. I'll likely have to reject and go for my PhD offer, but still stoked to get in somewhere this round :)

tippybug was given 20K out of 60K tuition.

Not to sound unappreciative, but I don't understand the scholarship situations at a lot of these schools. I applied to Columbia hoping I'd be one of the few who gets full funding (delusions of grandeur and whatnot), but with the 20k scholarship I can't help but think... if I can't afford 60k per year, then I still likely can't afford 40k... How many people do they actually get to pay that much?? ?

I was recently accepted to Columbia as well, and for what it's worth the person I was speaking to didn't mention a scholarship at all, so I'm just waiting for the admissions packet. So if you got one that's certainly something. Probably doesn't address the core problem of 40k versus 60k, but I would still be proud of that.

I don't know what this poster above (with 0 reputation) is getting out of trashing these programs. I'm about as cynical as you can get when it comes to institutions like NYU or Columbia. But it is simply inaccurate to say that they run "open" admissions. They are among the most highly visible and famous programs of their kind in the world, and so while the classes may be larger than state schools where you have 3 to 12 admits, you have to factor in the fact that they are getting many more applications than, say, a Hopkins or a Wyoming. The international attendance at Columbia's virtual open house was crazy compared to Hunter's. It's a real brand.

I may not be able to afford the tuition but clearly someone is paying for it. Sure, Columbia won't compete with funded programs, but really this board's entire discussion is predicated on the fact that there are great writers who don't get admitted everywhere, or anywhere. For every person who gets into Iowa, Amherst, Michener and Columbia (and therefore has the luxury of choice) there is a great writer who only gets into Columbia.

I promise I don't normally lick institutional boots like this. Columbia is a messed up school. So is NYU. So are most places  when you look at them holistically. But that doesn't change how we can choose to feel about the admissions results.

Congrats!!! Poetry or fiction?

Just received an email from Columbia to check the portal. Just based on that I knew I had been rejected. I also applied to GMU as part of the second pool of applicants (still considered for funding). Haven't heard back yet. Waitlisted at LSU (removed myself from waitlist), and rejected from Iowa and Northwestern. But I've already accepted an offer to attend JHU's MA in Writing program part-time because I just started a new job, which is writing intensive, and the employer will cover the full tuition cost for part-time graduate study!

This was my first application cycle, and even though JHU had initially been a back-up, I'm incredibly grateful things fell into place the way they did. I also learned a lot about what it looks like to prioritize writing in my everyday routine. I think my biggest takeaway from this cycle is that writing is what makes a writer, not a grant, fellowship, or an acceptance to a program. Even if I had been accepted to my top program, if I didn't discipline myself to continue writing (and revising and editing), I'd just be an alum of a great program.

I'm also super grateful for all the info and support from this forum, and for all the resources that were shared in Draft! Planning to take a workshop this summer from a non-university organization.

Best of luck to you all in the future! And to take a line from some friendly rejection emails: I look forward to reading your work in the future (even if I'll never know if it was written by one of you ?)!

Don’t say no yet until you try negotiating with them! They probably won’t budge but definitely worth trying.

I really hope this troll person is okay. I hope they satisfy their needs of hurting/bickering with strangers online (hopefully gradcafe is their only platform) and not IRL. Please seek help (not sure if therapy or drugs are affordable to you?) if not, meditation is a great gateway to understanding your own fear, anger and confusion. The insight timer mediation app is free if you have a smartphone, and it’s a good starting place.

Sending you positive thoughts.
