MSW2020lm Posted April 13, 2021 Posted April 13, 2021 I am also assuming rejection. Thanks to everyone for the support over the year! taco-belle Posted April 13, 2021 Posted April 13, 2021 I am currently just finishing up the Addictions and Mental Health program at Durham actually. If anyone is looking to gain more counselling experience and training, I reccomend it or another similar program. I really liked all of my instructors at Durham, most work in the field and couple even took took the OISE program lol. I am still not sure if I'll be reapplying to UofT in the fall. Considering the cost of these applications, I definitely need to better evaluate the likelihood of my acceptance. Best of luck to everyone in their future endeavors! Toughcook1e 1

Do you mind if I ask you how long the Durham Addiction/MH program is if you're fulltime? It seems like it might be a good thing for me to look into.
Hemingwho Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 Sorry I think I was mixing your program up with the Fundamentals of Addiction certificate at Durham

The program I'm taking is 3 semesters (2 semesters of courses + 1 placement). It's still a great program and it was reccomended to me as a stepping stone to the OISE program. I know several people in course have applied for September and have been accepted Toughcook1e 1
Jumbo3 Posted April 14, 2021 Posted April 14, 2021 (edited) Hi everyone! I hope you guys are doing well. UofT was my last hope and I heard back from UofT a few days ago with a rejection. Those who got offers, congratulations!! You guys worked hard to deserve it and those who are in same situation as me, I hope this will become a useful experience for our future success! At least, the painful waiting game is over. Since now I heard back from all the schools I applied to this year, I'm wanting to send emails to the professors who wrote me reference letters. I want to thank them for the letters, tell them however I didn't get any offer and ask if I can contact them after 2 years to ask for new reference letters. I need help on how to start the emails. Does anyone have any advice for this? Edited April 14, 2021 by Jumbo3 simp4gradschool and micher 2

Does anyone have any advice for this? Hey! I'm sorry to hear about UofT Although you didn't get the outcome you wanted, you deserve a big pat on the back for applying and going through this whole process! I will likely be in the same boat as you for references (but my timeline will be shorter since I plan to reapply next cycle) so this is what I was thinking. I'll thank them for writing letters and for their time, and then I'll briefly tell them my plans for the coming months (whether that's getting more experience or taking courses). I'll then say that I plan to reapply and am wondering if they would be willing to provide a reference for me again. If I've done work with them since re-applying, I might mention if they could emphasize that, but at the very least I'll tell them what I'm planning so that they can see I'm proactive and how much I value their input. You mentioned that you'll wait a couple years to ask them again, does that mean you're planning to re-apply in a couple years? I'm asking because you may decide to ask different people in 2 years than the one's you've asked this past cycle. As such, you could always leave your emails more open ended such as, I'm planning on spending the next couple years [taking courses, working etc.] and then re-applying to make myself a stronger applicant. simp4gradschool 1

OverCaffeinated888 Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 Hey all, I was also unofficially rejected from the program so just currently processing all the emotions that go with that. My admission GPA was 91% from UBC psych and I have 5 years of helping experience including distress lines, crisis lines, physical rehab centres, and palliative care at the hospital as well as working for a social work organization for 2 years. So I really don’t know what it takes to get in anymore... if anyone here was accepted I would love to know what your admission GPA was and what kind of experience you have. I’ll be applying again this next cycle. Good luck to everyone reapplying! MegArmstrong, Toughcook1e and micher 3
taco-belle Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 I also emailed yesterday requesting my result and was told that I'll be reccomended for refusal. Not surprised, as I do not think I have enough experience but very frustrated I had to wait so long to find out. 3 hours ago, OverCaffeinated888 said: Hey all, I was also unofficially rejected from the program so just currently processing all the emotions that go with that. I honestly don't know what more they could want. I have heard many stories from people in similar situations that have been denied multiple times from this program. I'm wondering if this year is more difficult for domestic students, because they are in desperate need of money (that is what I heard from someone in the registrar's office, unofficially) and international tuition is so much higher. Its a crime how much they charge international students. OverCaffeinated888 1
GradApplicant2021 Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 FYI, I emailed to inquire about the status of my application, and I received the following response: "Thank you for reaching out. We understand you are anticipating the results of your application. Like so many organizations, this year has presented many challenges. For OISE, applications for admission have significantly increased and a longer turn-around time is sometimes unavoidable. Please be assured faculty and staff are working very hard to notify applicants. We're committed to top-notch client service and an excellent experience for every applicant. As soon as a decision is provided, we'll process it as expediently as possible. A reminder official result correspondence is uploaded to the online admissions application (an e-mail will alert you to a newly available result letter). Thank you for your interest in OISE, as well as your patience as we finish consideration of your application. "

I've seen people with great grades get rejected and people with mediocre grades get accepted. From my understanding they put a lot of weight on the application/ letter of intent itself. Of course I'm sure you know that these have to be catered to fit what the school is about/ what they're looking for. So using the right wording, language, framing, etc. becomes important. They have so many applicants they can choose from so I'm sure a lot of times it can come down to small details. Unfortunately, OISE has the luxury to be picky lol I'm sorry to hear about your bad news but you seem to have a great foundation and will achieve the goals you strive to! Its a crime how much they charge international students. This makes sense since they mentioned to vancouverpsych (forum member) that they have a lot of out of country admits who needed longer to respond due to covid issues so the wait list people will have to wait a while. And it seems most people who got accepted were international because there are barely any acceptance posts on grad cafe because I think it’s mostly a Canadian thing. I mean I think international students are great but it should be fair so Canadians don’t get screwed over we can’t all afford to study abroad and pay international tuition. The OISE program seems hypocritical since they are all about social justice, equity and minimizing cultural and social barriers. They are basically creating a cyclical cycle of oppressing those from lower SES backgrounds while admitting wealthy people who can afford international tuition to get ahead in their careers. This is how the wealthy get wealthier and the poor get poorer and the middle class diminishes. Thanks U of T. Okay sorry rant over. I just had to. BobbiQueen, taco-belle, coffee21 and 2 others 5

You could be right - I guess it just hurts because I spent sooo long on the letter of intent and made sure to cater it exactly to the program I had 4 people look it over including a professor and I just have read it and re-read it over 100 times before submitting. Oh well - some things are just not meant to be and I’m trying to see “rejection” as “redirection” Toughcook1e, Toronto92 and MegArmstrong 3

OverCaffeinated888 Posted April 15, 2021 Posted April 15, 2021 I know some of you aren’t ready to hear this because I sure as hell wasn’t when I got rejected - but what is going to make us amazing counselors is who we are and our experiences not some piece of paper or where we get that piece of paper. Some of the most amazing counselors I have had got online degrees from places I hadn’t heard of and some of the worst counselors I’ve had went to prestigious schools. Let’s not let some academic/educational system define who we are and tell us what we can and can’t do. All of us here have the same goals - we want to help people and make a difference and if we keep that in mind and express our most authentic selves - I’m confident we will all find fulfilling work that brings us abundance. You are all amazing people who want to do good in this world; believe in yourselves and the universe will too ❤️ There are so many beautiful paths to the same destination. And one day I’ll meet y’all there ? saira4, VancouverPsych, MegArmstrong and 11 others 14
BobbiQueen Posted April 16, 2021 Posted April 16, 2021 Hi friends. Sorry to those who received an unofficial rejection. I currently haven't gotten any updates yet and I'm not about to email Todd so I'm just going to wait and see. I have friends who have gotten late acceptances for other programs at UofT this year, and apparently UofT sends out late acceptances a lot. ? Honestly, whooooo knows??? Those floating in the unknowing abyss with me, I salute you. Lets see what happens. And those who already know, I wish you all the best with your future endeavours. never stop dreaming 1
