Foehn Posted January 31 Posted January 31 Interview recap for anyone curious: Had a 10 minute zoom with Davis on Thursday, didn't feel very confident at the end but also felt a little turned off by the format. I understand that they probably get a lot of applicants and have a lot of people to choose from...but it felt very strange, impersonal, and rushed. In contrast, had a 30 minute zoom with UCR that I really enjoyed and made me very excited about their program. Was much more conversational and I felt like I had good interactions with all three panel members. Got an invite to interview with UCSD yesterday. As mentioned above, UCI has paused their review in solidarity with the general strike. Hoping to hear from them next week. Still waiting to hear from University of Washington. A friend has an interview with VCU for a concentration in ceramics. Maybe the different areas reach out at different times, but I applied for a concentration in fiber/textiles which falls in the same category (craft/materials) as ceramics. So I'm assuming I didn't make it into their final round. Oh well! Asking for a friend: has anyone heard from University of Colorado Boulder? Emolibra97, crash1996 and Essa_ 2 1

That’s how I felt with my Chicago one. I appreciated that they asked really specific questions about my portfolio but it felt a bit aggressive in some way? With Oregon the way it was a conversation made me feel so much comfortable and interested in the program.

It was pretty off-putting and left me feeling much less warm about the program than I've felt on several campus visits. And there's no second round! That's super surprising to me. Use the weird format to narrow it down, sure, but for the whole decision? Similar to yours at UCR, I had a UCSB interview that felt much more comfortable and conversational and gave me much better program vibes. And that's only their first round. At Berkeley I had a 30 minute call with one faculty member that's their only round. Such different approaches just within the UCs! Good luck on your UCSD interview, and hope you hear from all the others you're waiting on! crash1996 1

Bummed that I didn’t even get an invite even though I visited campus and talked extensively with professors and admin. But I’m also very surprised that this is their format. 10 minutes is nothing. Walk me through your process from idea to finished work? Why this program? Very straightforward questions. The interview lasted almost an hour. For UChicago it was the opposite. Very quick 15 minutes. They lwk grilled me a bit on my work. They had very specific questions on my portfolio that I can't get into here, but the standard questions were also asked like why here? How did you became familiar with making art? As we are living in a world full of images, how would you as an artist deal with this? What is your targeted audience? This interview felt waaay more intense and quick. I hope this helps and best of luck! I'm still waiting to hear back from UCLA, Yale, and Irvine. This is my second year applying to Painting programs — I had a few acceptances at schools I was really excited about last year, but the funding/financial situation wasn’t what I had hoped for, so trying again with (hopefully) a stronger portfolio + exhibition resume in hopes of earning more merit aid! A departmental email sending to schedule your preferred time/date for Zoom meeting. 30 min interview with the faculty (but it doesnt mention who all would be there). gabagoolio 1

I’ve been waiting to hear back from SAIC Hunter Yale Boston university I applied for painting and haven’t heard anything from any of them except hunter saying they thought I had a missing app fee but it was a mix up on their end and to ignore their previous email.

I heard from a friend that they are having funding issues, so that might have something to do with it? Also, it's possible that with visa concerns they just didn't get enough applications this year for programs outside of painting (which I believe is their largest department).

Updates as of today: Waitlisted at UW-Madison Rejected at Ohio State Interviewed at U Minnesota - still waiting to hear (I'd love to go here) Interview with U Arkansas this Friday Have not heard from: UIC CMU U of Oregon U of Arizona The waiting game is killing me. Was more bummed than I expected about getting waitlisted at UW-Madison, though not surprised. The interview was tough but I thought it went pretty well, but, I do want to focus more on filmmaking and photography as an interdisciplinary practice, and their 4D program was very performance-art and experimental based. Minnesota would be an ideal fit. Just have to be patient!!!! crash1996 1

You'll likely have admission offers elsewhere by March 1. For others waiting for Yale, Rutgers, and BU, I applied there too and haven't heard back yet either. No sweat though, I wasn't expecting to hear back before February, but I do expect some of them to reach out at some point this week, or the next.

I don't think I can speak to their funding that much since they're not a state school. But as a private art school, they're going to admit students every year, so I wouldn't be worried that much. I think the big issue is the timeline being pushed way too far back for applicants. Come March, people want to know their admission offers so they can make a decision. And for some folks, they might be waiting to travel and visit schools, after an offer, to better inform their decision. This is why SAIC's deadline extension is really messy. ferretpalace 1
