But I tend to overplan and overthink everything.

toinfinityandbeyond Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 this might be a dumb question, but when POI email to set up a phone call and sign with their first name only, should you address them by their first name or Dr. X?Â

All current PhD candidates I've talked to refer to those professors by first names too, so you're not being overly informal. That said, if you're worried about it, it absolutely can't hurt to be cautious and say Professor X or Dr. X. toinfinityandbeyond 1

That being said, I think before you get to know a POI personally, you should air on the side of formality and address them as Dr. XYZ. At least that's what I've been doing. Hope this is helpful  toinfinityandbeyond 1
Mopar18 Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 I have had a few sign with just their first name but since it's email and not in person along with the fact that it's mostly been introductory stuff, I go with Dr. Whatever. I have seen some grad students talk to their advisers on a first name basis but they already have relationships with them. I also feel awkward calling people who are my superiors in any way by their first name...like when you graduate HS and your teachers tell you to call them by their first name...I still say Mr. or Mrs....same with my in-laws. That's just a personal thing though. toinfinityandbeyond 1
ThePastelCalico Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 (edited) Just got anxious and called Oregon. The person I spoke with said that the committee should be communicating their admissions decisions either early this week or early next week. Specifically, they mentioned that the committee has made their decisions, so be on the lookout for emails if you applied! Updating to say that I just got an email informing me I’m waitlisted at Oregon, so if you got accepted and know that you won’t be accepting their offer, please let them know ASAP! They sent out about 12 offers, and have 9 on the waitlist, just as an FYI for everyone else! Good luck! Edited February 5, 2018 by ThePastelCalico Got waitlisted lol Mathez1, qeta, European Lumpi and 1 other 3 1

Glad you had some more good news This is a repeat of an earlier question (sorry) but does anyone know if Berkeley has started making rejections? I don’t think I’ve been accepted as I didn’t get a phone call a few weeks ago (and overall I don’t think I was a great fit) but it would be nice to know for sure.
KevinJHa Posted February 5, 2018 Posted February 5, 2018 Happy Monday all, congratulations to everyone who heard news!!!! Nothing on my end. For those who heard from the CUNY Graduate Center, do you have any news of the open house thats coming up? I thought I had a great chance to get in, including working as an RA for a big faculty member for about a year and taking classes there, but I haven't heard anything. The faculty member called me today checking up on me, but I had no news to report. He said they must still be deliberating.

In the email requesting the the interview (received January 25) they said: "I also wanted to alert you to an open house at the CUNY Graduate Center in Manhattan on Tuesday, February 13th.  That's an event where prospective students come and meet us.  It is open to both admitted and waitlisted applicants and we hope that you can join us then." Despite this language I have received no notice of if I'm admitted, accepted, or rejected. In my pretty short and informal interview on the 29th they also said that there was no funding was available to help anyone come visit, and they wouldn't make final decisions for another week or two. That's all the info I have. I won't be going to the visit day since it would be pretty expensive to fly from the midwest.Â
EmC96 Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 On a related topic, how likely are you all to attend visit days in general? I got an invite to Madison's admitted visit day, I'm trying to figure out what to do. It would be expensive to travel since I'm in California finishing up my bachelors, I do love the school, but I am still waiting to hear back from my dream program. I know it's not literally mandatory, but how odd is it to not attend? I want to remain respectful to the program and professors there.

This may not answer your question, but will your trip be partially subsidized by the department? Can you try and secure additional reimbursement to attend the open house?Â

I have an idea obviously, but I don't want to make any moves until I know what will be happening. It honestly makes me feel better knowing that there are others going through this anxiety and what ifs right now, if others can brace through it I can too! We are the same person!!Â
carolynb Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 Has anyone heard from Temple Sociology PhD program yet?? I saw one person post-Jan 23rd and then nothing else! Freaking out...

I thought that was the norm I got an email from the director at a research center, she asked if I was attending the March 9th visit, no more details other than that. The information is supposed to be in the welcome letter, but I haven't gotten mine yet. It would be fantastic if they funded it, I've just been assuming that's not the case. (Although even with funding, it might be a bit iffy to leave my college right before finals. I could manage it, but I'm just trying to gauge how much weight to assign to visits priority wise)

You know it's basic human courtesy to let the applicant know they are rejected, or send a short email update to other applicants after the candidates have been selected. It's $100+ in application fees with tons of emotional and intellectual labor. I am hurt on a personal level with such indifference. Edited February 6, 2018 by syza

Regardless I hope you hear some good news, I know CUNY has a hard time getting decent funding.

I agree, it’s really difficult to get through this part, but I would suggest flipping your thinking about it. If I haven’t been rejected from a program, I assume it’s because I’m still in the running. Who knows if it’s literally true, but there’s a decent chance it is, and that helps me to be more patient with the process. KevinJHa and CandideCoating 1 1
socihk Posted February 6, 2018 Posted February 6, 2018 (edited) Congrats to all those beautiful green acceptance labels! Just want to ask you guys a question. Is it normal for schools like harvard to send their applicants emails about potential scholarship information disregarding application status? Like yesterday I got an email from harvard scholarship committee, saying that there is a scholarship for those international students from my home region, and they strongly recommend me to apply asap since the deadline will be on early march. The email stated explicitly that it has nothing to do with application status, and is just a piece of information. But I wonder if they would even waste their time sending such emails to all applicants when the application status is still uncertain. Is there any possibility that this kind of emails would only be sent to shortlisted applicants? (though this sounds stupid to me either, but a guy like me still hearing nothing whatsoever is now very sensitive to whatever email.) Thanks! Edited February 6, 2018 by socihk

Given the large volume of applicants to Harvard every year, they probably will and can only pay attention to those who are on the long/shortlist.Â
