Waiting it out: theatre, performance, cinema PhD want-to-be 2012
eleanor replied to Bats's topic in Performing
drocket-- Thanks for replying! I'm just applying to the MA program right now as they said they aren't accepting applicants without MAs to their PhD programs anymore. Where did you get your MA/what is it in? Hah, considering you are also applying to American Studies programs I guess there would be some reach at a Canadian school for some of your interests. What are you looking to focus on? I'm interested in women's phenomenologies in contemporary theatre, particularly the avant-garde. And some other stuff, but that's what I highlighted in my SOP. I suppose it is good to have a timeline now, but man, I'm kinda glad he didn't get back to me on Monday! One less day to agonize. -

I have yet to encounter anyone on this site applying for either the MA or Ph.D department at UToronto, but after sending an email about two weeks ago I got an e-mail back this morning that said: "Hi, Eleanor. Yes, we received a full application package from you. We hope to have our invitations distributed by email by the end of this week. Take care, Bruce" I feel like this means I didn't get in. Don't most people who get accepted basically get "unofficial" words of acceptance from the grad coordinator when they ask if everything went through and when they'll receive notice? Pretty bummed. Really would love to move to Toronto. -

I applied to CUNY-Brooklyn for MA in Theatre History & Criticism. I received an e-mail from the head asking for my supplementary materials, saying they were going to start reviewing applications in early March. -
Seconded, very interested in knowing more about Rochester. Also if there's a way to check your app status online...?

I have an SOP I've been working on I'd love for someone to read/I would love to read someone else's. I'm applying for an MA in theatre history and criticism. Hit me back! -
Ah, that is good advice. I am mostly interested in the Canadian universities for financial as well as academic reasons. Good point about the Ph.D program in the U.S. though. I can cross that bridge when I get there, though. Where all are you applying?

feminism in humanities SOP?
eleanor replied to tendaysleft's topic in Statement of Purpose, Personal History, Diversity
I think that feminism, as a variable and constitutively ambiguous field of study and ideology, is something you need to have a very strong grasp on if it's something you wish to/know already informs your work. Either completely own it or don't mention it at all. -
So I'm just now starting to get my shit together for applying to MA and MFA programs in Dramaturgy and Performance Studies. I graduated from Grinnell (small school in Iowa) in 2010 with a degree in Religious Studies and Gender and Women's Studies. I've basically taken the past year to really zero in on what I want to do. While I wasn't a theatre major, I did a lot with theatre and film studies when I was in undergrad. This past year, I've been working on shows and interning with companies while also making money as a nanny in NYC. I've decided that ideally a Ph.D program would be the next step for me, but all of the programs that interest me seem to require an MA before the Ph.D. Right now, here are the programs I'm looking to apply to: UMass-Amherst--MFA Dramaturgy UIowa--MFA CUNY-Brooklyn--MA University of British Columbia--MA UToronto--MA and maybe UT-Austin for an MA Right now, I'm most interested in Toronto and UBC's programs. They seem very interdisciplinary and, like, aware of film as a thing that exists, which is exciting for me as I'm really interested in how theatre is changing with the advent of digital technologies. What do folks think about Canadian programs for performance studies/theatre stuff? I know it seems weird that I'm not applying to NYU, but I can't afford the MA and they seem to only let students who have MAs into their Ph.D program. So, my question is: what are Toronto and UBC's reputations in the larger world (hah) of theatre academia?

cinema/film studies programs that aren't actually cinema/fil
eleanor replied to eleanor's topic in Humanities
I'd like to apply to some programs in the second tier or whatever, too--these all seem like great programs, and programs I certainly have a shot at getting into, it seems, but what are some mid-range programs? I'll use the word "program" again. Thanks guys for all your help! -
Damn, someone just dropped a truth bomb....

Re: Arizona--how represented is film studies in the media arts department? It seems to be a lot of TV work.... I want it to be good as I'm kind of in love with Tucson. -
I'm thinking about applying to MA programs for Fall 2011, most likely. My field of interest is primarily film studies and critical theory, but as I am not a film studies major at my current school, I think it'd be in my best interests to look at media studies, visual studies, etc. programs that allow for a heavy film and theory focus. I guess what I'm asking is: Does anyone have any input as to what particular programs I ought to look into? I've done some googling, but I'm wondering if my background would be amenable to some of the more obvious choices: USC, NYU, UCLA, etc. I apologize if this is an inappropriate question, it's just that I'd like some more personal information about this sort of thing than just the google results I'm pulling up. Anyone have any information? Also I posted this in a livejournal community, too, so apologies if you see this twice.

Does anyone have an experience/knowledge of this program? I'm interested in film theory, and am wondering how amenable that program would be to my interests. Also, how competitive is this particular department and program?
