The importance of emailing with different professors.
CreamyDog69 replied to Soheila's topic in Applications
And honestly, in the biological sciences it is not necessary to email anyone. It's not a bad idea to email people who you would love to work with, but you won't be penalized for not doing it. -
Sure thing. I scored 166/161/5.5 V/Q/AWA, but I don't think the AWA actually matters. I have several friends going to top 5 schools with AWA scores at 3.5-4.5

I would say the most important order of business is doing better on the GRE then. Also spend a lot of time on your personal statement, but I don't see a reason to do a master's when you'd be perfectly competitive for PhD programs with better GRE scores. I'd say aim for 70% below-ish minimum. I used Magoosh to study and I thought it was fantastic.

Can I ask which 10 programs you applied for?

What kind of PhD programs did you apply to? What is the breakdown of your GRE score? Either way, it's likely too low for many competitive programs.

This. Talk to Post-docs in the labs if possible because if you're working as hard as you say you are, then there's no reason that they wouldn't take you especially since they don't have to fund you. Edit: I guess it's also possible that with all of the stress you haven't been particularly nice/sociable/likable, which is definitely something that is important

At this point, they've more than likely rejected you, but haven't had the decency to send out emails.

After the 15th
CreamyDog69 replied to XYZ1234's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
Definitely worth a try to reach out again and see if you get a response if it's been more than a week or 2. Sometimes things sink to the bottom of inboxes and faculty are busy people. -
I accepted the offer... Right?
CreamyDog69 replied to bextt's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
Yes. Relax. It'll be ok -
If they haven't given you an offer by now, it's unlikely you'll get an offer you'd like on the 15th.

A silly question
CreamyDog69 replied to invokerinjoker's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
Schools ask for your transcripts before you start and I've seen a few schools with clauses that say they can revoke your admissions if they see fit. I don't know how likely it is, but I'm sure it's possible. -
Till when should I wait?
CreamyDog69 replied to Vincent_2k's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
UCSD has made offers. The deadline for a lot of these acceptances are in 4 days. They've almost certainly all made offers and have had people commit by now.- 12 replies

Wait Listed in CMU, Offer from Purdue
CreamyDog69 replied to Vishesh's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
Just know that according to the April 15th resolution, you would need to obtain a written release from Purdue to renege on your acceptance of their offer. "However, an acceptance given or left in force after April 15 commits the student not to accept another offer without first obtaining a written release from the institution to which a commitment has been made. Similarly, an offer by an institution after April 15 is conditional on presentation by the student of the written release from any previously accepted offer." -

I know for sure that some of the programs have already made offers.- 12 replies

There's still technically a chance, but I wouldn't count on it if you haven't heard back by now.- 12 replies

We've wined, we've waited, now it's time to celebrate 2016
CreamyDog69 replied to hippyscientist's topic in Officially Grads
One of the things I like about bioscience PhD programs is funding is pretty much guaranteed, which is nice. -
I didn't get it, but wow the reviewers said some really nice things like, " ...the candidate's intellectual merit even as an undergraduate already compares competitively to the upper quarter of 2nd year graduate students; and his broad impacts are notable. ", which makes it slightly confusing why I didn't get it.
-
It was actually quite confusing because whenever they referenced the essay, they alternate between considering it a single essay and 2, so I just wrote a single essay, but referenced broader impacts within it.
-
Thanks! I didn't know this
-
As far as I know, you're still in the same pool of applicants regardless. Even if fewer 2nd years apply, you're still competing against the first years as well. So, with everything else being the same, your chances don't change.
-
I don't understand this logic
-
I haven't the slightest clue! What is everyone else planning on doing? Next year!
-
When I hear back from Grad schools, I have a general idea from the results page, but it's a pleasant surprise. For this? This is torture. I know I'll hear back tomorrow and I have no idea what kind of news it'll be.
-
Also not OP, but I have a fellowship from the University already and it's more than the GRFP, so my program would just add a bit of extra money to my GRFP to bring it up. I too have heard the legends...
-
Application season is over and GRFP results will be posted soon! What am I supposed to worry about now??? Grades? What do I do?
