What Schools Are You Waiting On!?
slpgrad620 replied to speechie2b's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Still waiting on St John's, Hofstra, Seton Hall and Queens College (after doing an interview this week). Even though I kind of already decided on where I want to go, I still want to hear back quickly just cause I hate this waiting game. -
I have an interview with QC this week and they never told me it was a group interview.... I wonder if everybody gets group interviews or maybe not?

Oh, considering that I'm planning to go to the Garden City one, which means I would only need to care about the "50 students" there, their program size at least for the Garden City location is pretty much the same as many other programs. By large, I expected more so thanks so much again for the info!
-
Ah thanks so much for this info. Few questions: How big (in number) is their class size? And starting clinicals first semester meaning literally the FIRST semester this upcoming fall? Also, did they mention anything about when the first day of classes are? Thanks!
-
It's impossible to find any information about how QC's interviews are and I recently saw somebody post that they were notified that their interview will be a group interview. Does anybody know if they did this in the past? I have mine this upcoming week & I'm very nervous. Thanks for any information in advance!

When do we hear from schools? (NY applicants)
slpgrad620 replied to mightyslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I haven't heard back from St John's or Hofstra either. I think Brooklyn College started offering interviews though if I'm not mistaken with a different CUNY Just hang in there & good luck!- 57 replies

When do we hear from schools? (NY applicants)
slpgrad620 replied to mightyslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
NY schools usually notify applicants starting mid-late March/early April according to some of the programs' FAQ. Idk if all schools are usually sent out in waves. What schools did you apply to? cause i still didn't hear back from 4/8 I applied to- 57 replies

If you're looking into bilingual opportunities, NY would be the best option to look into since it's extremely diverse and there's a huge Mandarin speaking population here. However, you did say your GPA is low but there are people who have 4.0s and still don't get accepted which shows that GPA isn't everything. You should maybe look into volunteer/ observation/ research opportunities to help you gain more experience and then possibly write about your experience in your personal statement to help you stand out. Best of luck.

Volunteer hours vs observation hours question
slpgrad620 replied to bettafish293's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Personally, the only observations I did were at my school's clinic for the 25 hour ASHA requirement because it's impossible to find volunteer/shadowing opportunities here. The only experience I have is volunteering to teach children and helping out a Senior Citizens group. I agree that if volunteering at hospitals, which often doesn't let you shadow SLPs or professionals but involves more paper work or just talking to families (even though that could be a plus to talk about any experiences with certain patients and their loved ones), I think I'd go for the shadowing option if you can find one. It's not a matter of what looks better but I think it's what you get out of it that could help you possibly write about a unique and personal experience or eye opening moments in your personal statement to make you stand out more. Good luck! -
Wow I've been accepted too and I never heard of this before so now I'm really curious too ... I hope it's not like that cause I really wanted to go there =/ btw which school told you that?

What programs are more medical-based?
slpgrad620 replied to maurmaur's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I think maybe MGH IHP and NYMC -
my professor who has been in the field for 10+ years knows a lot about different programs and she said that their program isn't that great and overall never really heard any positive reviews about their program either.

Speaking of Interview Attire...
slpgrad620 replied to SLPsingballs's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I think just a button down dress shirt and dress pants from H&M would do. If you're worrying about hiding tattoos, i'd suggest long sleeves and go with pants rather than a skirt (especially if the skirt is too short or tight) . Good luck! -
If I'm not mistaken, you can take a Physics course (which is what I did and I got accepted into a program) instead of a Chemistry course cause chem seems more tedious but you definitely need to get all your ASHA pre-reqs done before entering into a program and if it's required, then you have no choice to go over 120 credits cause you wouldn't want one course to hold you back

You can apply via CSDCAS or the website but their original application due date was Jan 15 for CSDCAS so I submitted it way before then and got an acceptance letter mailed to me on the 30th of Jan. If you didn't submit your application yet, you really should since it took time for the admissions office to review it and you need to send your transcript with Fall 2016 grades directly to the admissions office (if you already did submit your application a while ago) b/c they won't consider it complete until they receive that
