  1. I got into a Counseling Psych PhD program with little to no research experience. I actually majored in English undegrad. However, I received my Master of Family Therapy degree so it is a closely related field. With that being said, it is possible to get into a program without research. It depends on your clinical experience level. Research is helpful and certainly is something that would open up a lot of doors, but if you can overcompensate the lack of research with a lot of clinical experience then you will be fine.
  2. I find public transportation to be incredibly gross and horrendous I never use it, but I'm originally from the DC area and studied in London so I am accustomed to better transportation systems. Septa is just a mess honestly. They close down randomly. There was a septa strike that affected many of my clients. Homeless people are on it. Just downright dirty and awful. I usually take an uber everywhere.
  3. I go to Drexel currently. I live in Center City, which can be pricier, but it is super convenient. I am able to walk to Chinatown, Old City, and University City if I really wanted to. Also everything is right here so you don't need to really leave. DO NOT BRING A CAR. Literally nowhere to park and parking is expensive. Commuting is a mess. I have classmates that commute from New Jersey and Delaware and with the amount of construction that occurs in the city, it is just a wreck. If you want to have a car, do so at your own risk. I would not utilize it to drive around the city though. Manayunk is the place to be if you want to live in the suburbs. I have a lot of friends that live there. I just think living in the city is a lot more fun and there is a lot to do there. I live right by the comcast center, next to a rooftop bar, and a beer garden. It's fun. University City has a lot of new apartments that could be nice. University City has plenty to do, but a lot of people come to Center City for things if you want an older crowd.
  4. Hi guys! I have just been admitted to the Counseling Psychology PhD Program. I am so excited! Go Dawgs!
  5. In my brain, I have already fast forwarded a year and have passed all of my examinations. Next week, I will believe that I have already graduated haha.
  6. Thank you so much!! I am so glad this stressful process is over...now to begin the stressful process of being a Ph.D. candidate!
  7. After waiting for what seems like an eternity...today I was officially accepted off the waitlist to my first choice, which is the University of Georgia! I am so excited!
  8. I graduated from Penn State in 2015. From what I have experienced, PSU is more open and accepting. It should not be a problem at all. With that being said anywhere you go guys are jerks by guys...specifically fraternity guys can be jerks. This is from my own experience. I am saying this as a sorority girl. For the most part, you should be fine. No one actually cares about anything other than you repping that Blue and White. As long as you don't wear Michigan or Ohio State stuff on campus...you're golden.
  9. School: University of Florida Area/degree: Counseling Psychology PhD Rationalization: Research Interests did not fully align, plus a technical snafu with my application occurred. Comment: Great program, but it opened my eyes to take a harder look at programs where I received interviews. Interesting enough if I had gotten an interview with Florida, it would have conflicted with a school that has easily become my top choice. I fell in love with it and our research interests aligned perfectly. Everything happens for a reason! Coping tactics: None needed...just waiting to hear back from other schools.
  10. Well I can relate to this. I had a low gpa going into my senior. I ended up even getting a 2.3 one semester because I was going through a lot. I was diagnosed with PTSD so it was hard. Luckily, I went into therapy and was able to get over a 3.0 the next two semesters. I also did a summer session. I am currently in a Master's program. It is possible to have a low gpa and still get into a Master's program, but there has to be growth. Things happen and it's understandable, but what did you do with it? If you have not been able to show that you improved yet, then I think you should do a summer session. It is important that they see that you are trying. However, with this said it may be harder with a 2.45 gpa. You may need to bring that to at least a 2.7. It is doable. If you kill the GRE, then that can open a lot more doors. Good luck!
  11. If you are into burgers...Baby's has the Kraz-E burger, which is a bacon cheeseburger with a doughnut as a bun aka it's amazing and incredibly bad for you...a lot of people go to the Corner Room because it's historic. If you are there for breakfast go to the Waffle Shop...the food is delicious! A cool cafe/bookstore would be Webster's. They sell used books and records and has a kind of hipster type of vibe.
