  1. Hello all, has anyone heard back about the Zankel Fellowships yet?
  2. oooh, good thinking! There will be no last minute, all-nighters for group projects with me! : )
  3. Oh yay! Congrats! I was hoping the wait list would come through for you!
  4. Congrats on getting into the MSW program! I am a single parent of a 4 year old and will be taking 16 credits while also doing a 20 hour internship, starting this fall. I've asked for reading lists for my classes and am starting to read ahead over the summer to lessen the burden in September. For me, the best time of day to get my work done is in the very early morning hours when I know my child will be asleep. I get up and read from 5-7am, pretty much everyday. This is in part because I love to read at that time, and also because I have a child who doesn't like to go to sleep at night- so getting much work done in the evenings is pretty unlikely. Ruth Bader Ginsburg had a toddler while she was in law school. She said that the 2-3 hours she spent with her child every night were what gave her balance. Dr. Ruth Westheimer, yes, the Dr. Ruth, she was a single mother to two children while she completed her PhD. We can do this!
  5. Oh dear! I'm so sorry to hear that it has turned out this way. Maybe try the website Meet Up. This way you can find like-minded people to meet up with for fun activities. Don't give up! Friends are out there waiting to meet you! Also, have you tried inviting everyone in the cohort out all at once? I may have misunderstood, but I get the feeling that maybe you've been mostly asking people to one-on-one events?
  6. Congrats on the offer! I self-funded my Cambridge social sciences MPhil entirely through US Federal student loans. I'll be paying for it each month for the next 25 years and I seriously don't mind at all! The experience and the education were, for me, entirely worth it. Plus, amazing professional and personal things have consistently happened as a result of my time there. Several people in my program and in my college went on to JD programs in the US, and loads of us went on to PhDs so no worries there. Feel free to reply or message me with any questions Good luck!
  7. Firstly, a big "Congratulations!" on your acceptance. Did you complete a FAFSA yet? I am an American who did a social sciences MPhil at Cambridge, self-funded entirely through US Federal student loans. These loans covered tuition and fees as well as housing and food, with a sufficient amount remaining in the loan "over-payment cash-out" to cover the costs of my gown, rowing, pub crawls, and etc. Availability of college funding varies greatly. I would imagine that even if you're accepted into one of the wealthier colleges, and you're fortunate enough to receive funding from them, you'll probably still need to consider other sources of financial aid to cover the MPhil expenses. I have no regrets whatsoever about going into debt for that MPhil. I'll be paying for it for the next 25 years, and honestly, even if I had to pay double the cost of my student loan bill for that experience, I wouldn't bat an eye. My time at Cambridge was one of the best years of my life and it has led to so many incredible things in the years that followed. Of course, not everyone is willing to take on additional student loans debt for an MPhil and not everyone goes to Cambridge and has the time of their life there, but, if I were you... it would be a chance I'd want to take! Feel free to ask if you have any other questions. Good luck!
  8. Congrats to all new HGSE students!
  9. anyone else a referral from the PhD application? the site still shows the results of the PhD, but gives no mention of the Ed.M. decision
  10. Okay guys, hang on for one more day! Just a few more hours to go now, really. Best of luck to everyone. Hope to see you all there!
  11. I agree, and I think this all comes down to temperament. We know that what one person finds absolutely soul crushing, another might describe as a thoroughly carefree stroll in the park. Also, I wonder if this "applying is the least stressful part" sentiment is a product of selective memory. It's like when people say having a newborn was the easiest part of parenting, yes? For me, the wait is the worst. I thrive under the pressure of doing the work and the "game" of applying for funding and additional opportunities. But, waiting to know if I will have the chance to do those things is awful!
  12. thanks graciasadios! It's so reassuring to hear that we are going to find out soon!
  13. Vulpix, you are a saint. Thanks for the info!
  14. oh, also, as far as concern about fitting in- you will have colleagues in your department, but you will also become a member of a Cambridge college, which is where you will live, eat, and play. Opportunities for sport and leisure, socializing, and finding a group of like-minded, inspiring peers will abound!
  15. Go. To. Cambridge. I did, and had the time of my life. I'm sure if you make that choice you won't regret it!
