14SLP14 got a reaction from aaaslp in Buying books- necessary?
I also was thinking about this! I barely used my books freshman year in undergrad so I just never bought them after that and was completely fine! I wonder if I would be able to get away with not buying them in grad school as well or if it's actually necessary now.
I did take a graduate level course in my undergrad and did not read the required book so I wonder if it varies course to course or by instructor? Or if we just dont need them!

Has anyone ever gone outside the US for their masters (in a country that is in the Mutual Recognition Agreement with ASHA) and come back to the US to practice? Did you have difficulty getting licensed in the US? Pros and cons of your experience? Debating applying to a couple abroad programs but want to know if it's worth the time and effort that an international application is.

    Thanks!

14SLP14 got a reaction from slpsalaz in How did you pick
It was sooo hard for me to decide! I had a mix of really expensive, cheap, and in the middle schools. I ended up picking a school in the middle even though the really expensive one was my dream school. I couldn't bring myself to pay so much when your salary is basically the same no matter where you go to school! I picked the middle priced school over the cheaper priced ones because I also factored in being in a location that would make me happy

I was told that your first 3 semesters you have about 2-3 clients (so you're able to rotate through the nine different tracks) and then your last two semesters you're placed in two externships (one in fall, one in spring) and might have one or two classes and one client in the clinic (This is what a current student told me), she also told me that you might go out into schools to do screenings which is really fun. She said that the workload is really doable with the number of clients you have and said that she has really enjoyed her clinical education. I think you might do clinic Tuesday/Thursday but im not sure that depends on your class schedule, etc. It seems that you have a good balance but i guess that depends on the person. the students i talked to said that they never feel stressed out about the workload that they have!

It has lots of resources!! There are a bunch of clinic rooms, audiology booths, supply closet, sensory closet, etc! of course, all university clinics don't get a lot of funding unless its through donations or the tuition is steep lol but honestly it's pretty good! I visited and toured and wish I took pictures but the description is all i can do for you. I hope it helps!

Yes! The clinic itself could be a bit nicer looking, to be honest- it's in a basement under one of the buildings where we'd be having classes, so the lighting is not the best. However, I think in many ways the ability to pursue the eight different tracks (generally two per semester) and the experiences we'd get from that pretty much make up for clinic appearances. We'd generally be doing two tracks at a time the first three semesters and then one track while doing our first external placement. So, we'd get so much of a variety of experience, from autism and AAC to child language to fluency to voice, etc. So while I've seen nicer-looking clinics, I'm super impressed by the opportunities of what we can do within the clinic!

I did my undergrad at University of Illinois for SLP. Though I loved the campus, I was not a fan of the faculty and the environment of their SLP program. As someone who went through the program, I believe it is fair to say that UIUC is not very student focused. Instead, the University of Illinois is much more research focused. I was meeting with a TA when she told me she wished she didn't attend University of Illinois. As a Junior in the program, I was confused as to why since it was the only SLP program I had ever known and I was a transfer. Soon enough, about 3 other TA's came in talking about how they regret their decision because of lack of support from teachers and funding. It was really sad to hear.

I am by no means against University of Illinois, I loved the campus and the people I met, but as I was going to Open Houses for other schools, I began to understand what the Tis in the SLP program were talking about. There are many other programs that are more client centered, and less intense on research. Also, as for funding at UIUC, good luck. Funding at UIUC is nearly impossible to get. During my 4 years in undergrad, I only met 3 people with funding from UIUC. Again, I know I'm sounding negative but the out of state price is crazy. I have been in two graduate classes during my undergrad and I got to know many graduate students who weren't very fond of the program. This could have to go with hiring on a bunch of new professors, so it was (and will be) a rebidding year or two.

My advice, all your masters is in 2 years, I wouldn't spend any extra money if you don't have to. Be where your familiar, close to your family and boyfriend. And I promise you the competitive nature is everywhere, I applied for grad schools where they had a more hands on approach to students and their clients. From reading your post, I feel like you already know what the right answer is, I just thought I would give you a point of view from someone who has experienced the program. Hope this helps!

I did my undergrad at UIUC and also was accepted here! Personally, I hate the weather here and wish I could move to California! I've heard schools there are extremely competitive! With the cheaper cost, the weather, and the support system you already have there I think I would stay there if I were you!! UIUC does have a great program but it's really hard to get assistantships in the department!

If you have the prereqs done/did CSD undergrad, it's 5 semesters, with only one summer: fall, spring, summer, fall, spring. I think they must do their credits differently, because I was also surprised about it only being 42 credits. I will be there on Friday for their Accepted Students Day, so I'm hoping to ask about that then.

Love the list above, the only other thing I would add to this list is: Where are your students getting jobs after graduation? Kind of goes along with the person's first one above.

Here are some questions I plan on asking at my upcoming open houses/accepted students day:
    1. Where do students do clinical placements? Does the program have connections to hospital or rehab facility placements? What populations do you usually see at the in-house clinic?
    2. Can you get paid to do research? How competitive is it to work in a lab? How many hours per week do people typical work in the lab?
    3. Are there scholarships that can be earned during grad school? (ex. for having high grades)
    4. What is a schedule for a typical student like? Do students socialize outside of school?
    5. What does this program have that others do not? (Basically why is this program worth the money)
    6. What do you wish you had known before starting grad school? How can I best spend my summer to prepare for the program?

14SLP14 reacted to A-1 in How many schools did you apply to in the 2019 cycle?
My professors tell us to apply to how many based upon our GPA. Here is the chart that I have been given when trying to decide how many to apply to.
    10-12 schools for 3.1-3.4 GPA
    6-9 schools for 3.5-3.75 GPA
    4-6 schools for 3.7-3.8 GPA
3-4 schools for 3.9 and up
My GPA is a 3.70 cumulative so I applied to 8 schools. So far, I have gotten into 4 schools. I have been placed on the waitlist for two of them. And, still waiting to hear back from the other two. In my opinion, do your research and apply to ones that fit in your criteria. I spent around $900 to apply to my 8 schools.

Very true!! I also got in to UIUC and it's basically half the cost. But Northwestern is kind of a dream school! I just don't know if I want to be in debt for years and years! Also, even with the highest scholarship they offer, the cost is still higher than many schools. I'm worried I won't get any funding anyways since almost everyone that gets accepted has good/similar GRE scores and GPAs!

Damn. That is very real. I’ll have to attend the open house to see if it’s really worth the price. Northwestern is my top choice as well. I feel like whether it’s worth it or not depends on what you want to do after graduating. If you plan to pursue a PhD and want to do research or work in academia in the future than a degree from NU does actually mean something. If being a school slp is your career goal than attending NU might not be the best idea. Just my opinion

So... I am also concerned about the finances at Midwestern. With the current 7.7% rate the total cost that you would pay over 5 years is 175k so the monthly payments are 3k per mo for 60 mo

    Because jeans would be ??

This. They say they can estimate that most people have received 20-30% scholarships in the past, but that is still very expensive. (Also, the viral video of that person with the $225k debt was an SLP student who attended Northwestern for grad school -- which is scary). They do have amazing connections though, but I couldn't justify paying that much for a University's name... Let's hope they're generous with scholarships.
