I'm thinking I should apply to masters programs to give me a better chance of getting accepted in a PhD (see signature). Is it bad to make two applications for the Masters AND the PhD program at a University? I mean, since they're being reviewed by the same committee, how do you write and SOP that says you're really qualified for their Masters Program, but also write the same one saying you're qualified for their PhD program?

Rejected from PhD program - won't tell me why.
Ternwild replied to ApexLegend's topic in Applications
@ApexLegend Before all of this, you need to clarify what this "complaint" is. This "complaint" may be something you feel is unsubstantiated but depending on what it is, the program/board may be not interested in having any incidents in this program. You need to clarify before I can even remotely take your side on this. Everyone is the hero of their own story. -
Oh. I was confused.

I think UC Davis and Texas A&M also refer to themselves as aggies.

I got one shortly after them rejecting me. Which was a rough burn. xD

Hold out. I'd expect to hear from places midway through Feb, so hopefully it will be good news for you two, too.
-
I mean, at least you've gotten accepted to one. Imagine how I feel seeing all the physics decisions and the only thing I have to show for it is rejections early on and being ghosted all week lol.
-
Well, seems like I'm being ghosted still, which means next Friday I'll get a lot of emails telling me about how sorry people are.
-
Nope, but I got rejected from the Physics PhD program for the third time, soooo. Take that for what it is.

Holy shit. I'm going to go out on a limb here and assume the reason is their GPA. I'm pretty sure I have an idea of what they were doing instead of studying... -

This is for existing Grad Students in physics who have already been accepted to their programs or are already attending: What format did you choose to write your SOP in? What I mean is, I know that a lot of people tend to write in the following way: 1 Story about their childhood/reason for becoming a scientist 2 Their research in under grad 3 Why this school I've been wondering what format seemed to have worked for you. I was thinking about cutting out the whole "personal story" thing and just focusing on previous research and what research I hope to do there. I'm not sure. I'm curious to see what other people did.

Nice. Though, I think I'd rather skip grad school than deal with Arizona's heat...

One by one my misery company friends are disappearing. Soon I will be the only person left in this forum. lol

Is there any disadvantages for taking a class for an R (reading) credit?
Ternwild replied to kjwhk64's question in Questions and Answers
If the reading is in your field, them it should be okay. It's all how you spin it. If you spend the semester reading sociology papers, you can consider it like research. If you spend a semester reading Shakespeare, maybe not so much. -
New February advertising slogan: February If you've made it this far, you're probably rejected. But, Donald Trump got elected President. In this fucked up world, even idiots can win. So, you might still have a chance!

Ooooo. Now that rejection has got to burn. They really liked your application. Took one conversation with you for the grad committee to be like: -
Travel to visit or video-conference interview?
Ternwild replied to nushi's question in Questions and Answers
You definitely need to visit. Video interviews are fine, but if it is a school you can really see going, visiting is surely the best way to get accepted. When you visit, you aren't limited to a timeframe like you are with a video call. Plus, you will get an opportunity to see most of the professors--some of which are on the admissions committee. Shake hands and leave good impressions. If it's a school you want, it is worth every penny. Consider it investing in your future. Even if you don't get admitted, you know you didn't let something as temporary as money keep you from giving it the best you've got. -
Boom! First rejection. Looks like I'm gonna win this race to the bottom!

Not getting the interview invite.....

I accept your challenge! No one is better at being rejected than me!
