Hello! The university of Pittsburgh has an excellent psychology post bacc program!! It’s so amazing - I attended this one. I’ve also heard that Northwestern, UC Berkeley and UC Irvine and more. I started my search for post baccs using apa - https://www.apa.org/ed/precollege/psn/2014/09/post-baccalaureate.aspx hopefully this helps!

Eanertodt got a reaction from orange turtle in Tattoos in grad school
I think tattoos are appropriate for graduate school. A lot of my friends and myself have tattoos that are shown daily!
I think if it made you uncomfortable about your tattoo then you should cover it. But he might have made that comment because he didn’t expect you to have a tattoo, which was the case with my advisor. I have two tattoos on my shoulders as well (and I often forget they are there too). Maybe he added the on you because it fits your personality or something
However, I probably would’ve been creeped out by the wink too. Winks are weird. If he was just like oh that’s a nice tattoo on you sans the wink, I would’ve been more okay.

I didn’t see this already done for this fall so... I’m starting the trend!

I will be in the clinical psychology Ph.D.  program! I am super excited about starting! I will be moving from PGH.

Eanertodt reacted to t_ruth in When should I contact professors I'm interested in working with?
I've already had students contact me. The early bird gets the worm, you know? I can get invested in a student if we start talking early on...
Yes, I know there are dangers to emailing faculty over the summer, but I think most would be fine with an email that said something along the lines of: I know it is summer and you may not be answering emails regularly, but I am very excited about your program and wanted to reach out sooner rather than later. If I don't hear from you, I'll follow up in the fall.

Eanertodt reacted to Torple in How do you feel?
I feel the same way! There’s literally nothing else I can do to prepare: apartment is confirmed, I registered for all my classes, I’m set. I get to relax, but the coming semester looms over me like a particularly imposing exam I haven’t studied for. Currently I’m scouring the internet for “typical day in the life of a social psych PhD student” so I can get a glimpse of what to expect. Nothing is helpful! (If anyone can direct me to a thread for this please do! I might have to make my own)

I think the fear of the unknown is what’s getting to me. I feel unprepared because I don’t know what I’m preparing for other than the always vague “readings and meetings”     I just want to start already ??

I’ve personally been going thru the same thing! I’ve just been trying to not work myself up about it too much. Like “there’s a reason I got in and it will be okay.” It’s hard tho

My friend has an undergrad humanities degree and was working in an unrelated field for about ten years. She volunteered in our lab and took classes for two years and got interviews from half her programs and offers at two, despite having no publications and a mediocre math GRE score. So I think as long as you volunteer in a lab and show interest, you should be fine!

Have you looked at recent theory of mind research? That's the best place to start. Find some research you like and then look at the faculty who are behind it. You may also want to check out SRCD and Cognitive Development Society.
It's about the professor you would work with, not about the program.

Welcome to graduate school!  You will definitely get conflicting information along the way in all aspects of professionalization (You will get different advice on writing a historiographical paper or an academic book review, to begin with).  You will have to learn, eventually, how to make calls for yourself.  (But, generally, you'll want to listen to your dissertation adviser the most.)  If you hate the GRE, take it once and just move on.  If you love the idea of boosting your GRE scores and take it again, be all means do it.  You choose what's most comfortable for you but you also have to weigh in what will be the best use of your valuable time.

@rx971 The rejection was a form letter from the program director. I'm not sure if acceptances are sent in the same way or if you will hear from the department directly.

Eanertodt got a reaction from SpYEsther in Should I apply to PhD AND Master's?
I personally applied to both Ph.D. and Master's programs because like you, I wanted a backup plan. I applied to MSW programs and Harvard's Masters Program thru the school of education (I have somewhat wide interests).
Depending on your interests you could apply for MSW programs, Master's in psychology (the one in mind is the Teacher's College at Columbia - a girl in my lab went there before doing a Ph.D.), Public Health or even counseling. Outside of the MSW, I've heard of people having these Master's degrees and going on to Ph.D. Programs in psychology. However, a master's degree doesn't always you an extra leg up, but sometimes it does help.  It just depends on what the POI is looking for tbh.
But Like others people have stated above me, most Masters programs are unfunded. However, there are some funded! Just be sure to ask and be assertive about it.

I would start off by figuring out what specifically the end game is and then work backwards. What are your actual career goals? What would you like to be doing in your day to day? You can "work with children" in so many capacities, from working as a school aide, doing ABA, or being a clinician. It's hard to say whether or not a program is a good fit if you aren't sure what it's fitting.

Eanertodt reacted to Sherrinford in Am I doomed without research publications? (Clinical psych)
Not doomed necessarily. You can still have quality research experience without a publication necessarily. Posters should be more reasonable a goal or something attainable.
I am in a funded PhD program, did not have any pubs or even posters. But I did have decent research experience.

I also know a fair share of people with a Master's who did not make it into the PhD. It really depends on so much more - such as what you did outside of class (projects, presentations, etc.)
The answer on your question really depends on how competitive you are as an applicant now already.

Yes. But you need to have an idea of what area of Psychology you want to go in. Get a good Psych 101 book to see the breadth of the discipline and which area(s) appeal most to you. Then try to learn more about those topics.

You guys are all amazing. I guess I’ll refine my research ideas and start gathering some background information for them so I can really start off strong.
    Thanks everyone!
My email was really brief. A simple greeting followed by how you’re excited to begin in the Fall. Then you can ask “is there anything you would like me to do to prepare?” That should show that you’re ready and willing to do something but you’re not pushing.

If you have an MA, schools won't really care about your undergrad as long as you meet the pre-reqs.
