  1. This is just my opinion so please take it with a grain of salt, but Pittsburgh is absolutely not worth paying extra money for. Especially if you have to take out loans to be able to afford it. I moved here from VA in August and things are a little better now but at first, I really struggled. It probably would have been better if I had had grad school to add some structure to my life, but even so, I think it still would have been hard. It's cold, it's ugly, and it feels very foreign to me even though I am only about 5 1/2 hours from the place where I grew up. If you were talking about NYC or some other place on the East Coast I'd say go for it, but Pittsburgh? I wouldn't. I'm sorry to say this and obviously you should wait until your visit to make up your mind about it - maybe you'll love it, or the program will be worth it! But If I could do it all over again, I absolutely would not move here.
  2. No, I moved here last August so I should qualify for in-state tuition. It would be more for personal reasons.
  3. Not sure whether it's an official waitlist but imho that probably means that they're waiting to see how many people accept their offer before they offer you a spot. I'm sorry it's not the news you were hoping for.
  4. Also, if either of you have questions about Pittsburgh, I live here already so I'll do my best to answer them! Either here or by PM would be fine.
  5. I was curious about this as well! But yeah, I definitely recommend attending one of their info sessions - I've been to two and I got a lot out of both of them. I think I am going to accept my offer but I may defer for a year, I still haven't decided.
  6. Just wanted to let you guys know that they did this last year too I'm pretty sure, so it may be standard.
  7. Your comment made me check the rankings and wow, that's quite a tie for #3! Also, Pitt fell quite a bit, which kinda sucks. I know I shouldn't care, but I do wonder why...
  8. I would go to whichever school turns out to be cheaper unless you know you want to work in either of those areas specifically after graduation. If that is the case, then location could be important as well.
  9. Glad it was helpful, and congratulations on your admission and decision to attend!
  10. Well, I think that is fantastic. I'm sure it will all work out - don't doubt yourself and don't lose hope!
  11. I understand. Honestly, I think you have a great background! One bad grade shouldn't make too much of a difference, especially since you explained it. You want to work with veterans, right? Also, thank you for your service.
  12. Gotcha. Well, remember, if it doesn't work out this time, you can always try again! I do feel like you will probably get in somewhere, though. What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? Also, I meant the online program for UCF - didn't realize you lived there!
  13. Gotcha! Ugh that sucks about Simmons (I had a bad experience with them too last year). I'm sure that isn't the only thing going for you! Do you live in the Boston area? (If you don't feel comfortable answering that no worries, just curious since you applied to all the schools there. Then again, I did that too last year when I lived in Virginia.) But yeah, I would definitely consider applying to some of the cheaper online MSW options if you'd rather not move! I got a good vibe from LSU, WVU, and UCF personally when I was looking into it. Edit: I'm a moron, I missed the part where you said the VA was going to be paying for it. I think USC is a great option if cost is not a factor! I probably would have applied there, but the tuition is astronomical. I'd still check out the programs I mentioned above if you're interested in getting your MSW online, though!
  14. It's asynchronous. More info can be found here: https://www.lsu.edu/chse/socialwork/academics/msw-online.php Ah yeah it's tough when our initial choices don't work out. Remind me what schools you've applied to again? I know BU and Michigan, but any others?
  15. Not creepy at all, I feel the same way about many people on here! Yeah, I pretty much agree with you, although I don't have a BSW so that is a potential sticking point as I do think I would learn the necessary content more easily in person. I haven't decided, no - I actually haven't even applied anywhere other than Pitt yet. I really need to make a decision in the next like week or so as to whether I'm going to. I think I may end up deferring for a year and applying to online programs in the meantime. I actually can't apply to LSU yet because I don't have the required statistics course, which sucks, but if I end up deferring I'll have plenty of time to complete that, apply, and then make my decision, so that's what I'm leaning towards, tbh.
  16. Yeah, I didn’t get into BU last year but I got into Columbia. MSW admissions are weird.
  17. Same for me but if you’re uncertain you could always call! It should be in the paper copy of your acceptance letter (the one you received via snail mail).
  18. I mean it’s hard to tell just from talking to people on the phone/emailing back and forth, but the members of the administration I talked to were really nice and helpful! I had the same concern about you as about scholarships and they told me there might be some available later on, just not the first year. But if you wanted to wait and apply to multiple programs, I think that would be a fine choice too. I also considered UCF and LSU - they’re similar in cost. I agree with you about not being that impressed by Edinboro, but of course, accreditation is the most important thing.
  19. Personally, I would go to WVU (I also considered their program) because it will be the cheapest regardless and you already have debt. Unless you are willing to consider moving? But if you’re just choosing between online programs, my advice would be to go for the cheapest one, for sure.
  20. Ah, I'm sorry to hear this. Looks like you've already received acceptances to some great schools, though!
  21. You're welcome! I understand, it's a crappy feeling. And it's okay, I just wasn't very strategic about where I applied, but I learned my lesson and everything is gonna be fine now. Remind me where else you've applied again? Have you had any acceptances yet?
  22. Hey, I'm sorry to hear this, but tbh I feel like BU is kinda weird. They were my only rejection last year - I was accepted at Columbia, Tulane, and Simmons. Waitlisted at BC before eventually being accepted off the waitlist. I ended up having to turn them all down due to financial concerns, but I guess what I'm saying is, don't lose hope? MSW admissions are odd and just because you got a rejection from one school doesn't necessarily mean you will be rejected from a "higher-ranked" school. Keep your head up and look at the interview as an opportunity. You deserve this just as much as anyone else, you're just as worthy and you're gonna make a great social worker. That's what I try and tell myself, anyway.
  23. I mean, it's important to keep in mind that this was an undergrad in a different program, but yeah, I would be wary of it if a big selling point is the diversity of the program. I will say that I lived with several students who were in Silver for undergrad and they were lovely and seemed to enjoy the program.
