Should I submit my GRE scores if it is merely optional? (170v/156q/5.5)
ray92 replied to JiHoo's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
I would submit your score. Since it is not required a lot of students probably will not submit their scores because they do not have to, this could be used to your advantage. If you and another applicant are head to head and they did not submit their scores you most likely will get picked because you go up and beyond what is required and two they have another way to see how "perform" . I would also submit it if you are applying for funding as well. Most GRE scores are there to weed out people if it is required. Since your program does not require them they might not even look at them until it they have to decide between you or another applicant. In my opinion go above and beyond what is required this will help you succeed in graduate school and pretty much life in general. -
Email them!!! It never hurts, Some may not email you back right away but most students want to share their experience with others. Also you could ask them once you get accepted what an acceptable work load is. That is one thing I wish I would have done was reach out to graduate students before I enrolled in classes to ask what is doable in a semester

The verbal and writing scores are pretty high and I expect the program will look at those two rather than the quant. Does the application say not required but preferred? -
Hello, I have been accepted to two schools for computing/computer science at the university of Utah and University of Oregon. What I would like out of a school is oppurtunity for research and occupation after graduate in the local area. I am wondering if anyone has been apart or currently a student at UofU or UO and their thoughts on the programs.

I have acceptance to University of Oregon and University of Utah. Now I am trying to decide between the two. I do not know much about the advisors or how they mentor graduate students. What is the best way to reach out to current graduate students? Should I just email them and ask how there experiences are with the advisor?

@machinesupportsvector You can apply to an Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU). https://www.nsf.gov/crssprgm/reu/list_result.jsp?unitid=5049 I think most deadlines have passed but since you are a sophomore you can always apply next summer. There are tons of research opportunities you can also try to apply at a national lab.

Yeah its a sweet program. I didnt find out about until my junior year in college. I was excepted but since you have to have one summer of research I didnt do it because I was accepted into an REU program. I thought with the REU I would have better chances of getting into graduate school

Did you just email the program email on their website and state that you were curios about your status as an applicant?

Congrats on the offer. I have not had any rejections yet. The only school I have heard back from was Utah so I don't know if I am on a wait list with the other schools or the schools just keep everyone in the dark and send out a mass rejection email once all the spots are filled. I also think unrelated domains could work for you as well. I worked with foster care children for a couple of years and I stated that in the personal statement. I roughly stated that I know how to communicate tougher subjects to someone that may not have the same level of my understanding as myself. I personally think every experience can contribute to ones research, it just depends on how you look at it such as character building, communication and finding oneself.

I know this may be a little late to you but there are programs to help first generation college students also low income families such as the Mcnair scholarship http://mcnair.ucsb.edu/ . Usually other first generation college students know others so if you know of anybody that is first generation and want to help send them to the link above. It is one that I wish I knew about before it was to late

Masters Applicants for Fall 2018!! Anybody out there?
ray92 replied to citrus00's topic in Waiting it Out
I applied to a PhD in computer science but they offered a section where if you did not get in the PhD program they would consider you for a M.S. I assume I did not get into the PhD program, since their offers were sent out for the PhD. -
@Bayesian1701 Ah let my clarify you would want to email the faculty. Admission would be a plus if you could get a hold of someone or meet them at a networking event. It is also easy to detect someone that has not read your paper and is bullshitting.
-
I personally think that even if the faculty does not respond it is okay some state that they wont but they know your name and you took the time out to read their paper and email them. This shows you are interested more than someone who just applies without doing any research. They read a lot of applications you have to stand out even a simple email could do the trick. You may show up on their desk and they may say hey i remember Scott Pilgrim he emailed me last month about doing research.
-
@huxlb Not only do you have to research on the graduate program you are interested in you will need research the faculty members there as well. One major factor that goes into a decision is similar research interest as a faculty advisor. If you read faculty on-line profiles it will give instructions (usually) how to contact them if you are interested in being a PhD student. If you are nervous about emailing them or how to start I recommend reading one of their recent publications and say hey I was reading (paper) and I was interested in the area of (stats interests) and i I found it interesting how you did (math magic) but have you thought about coming from this angle. OR you could end it by stating. I have no idea what I read but I am interested in learning more

@D'Kruzzer What program did you apply to? I am also waiting on them -
Congratulations!

@huxlb I think you should be pretty competitive. What you could do is scout out a faculty member you want to work under and email them and ask them if they are accepting graduate students. Some factulity profiles will give instructions on how to contact them and some may ask for a cv or resume. I would contact the faculty member directly (having a friend on the inside is nice). Also seek out graduate admission folks networking is key
