nguyen16041 reacted to surfinghozt in Would it be disrespectful to ask my future advisor/program to start a semester late (Spring instead of Fall)?
I made an account just because I'm nervous to ask this question. I was accepted to a small MS program earlier this year for the fall. I've been excited to finally get to focus on research and for living somewhere else. However, in the past few weeks after graduation I've been feeling sad. Since high school, I've been taking summer classes (including this summer - field work) and/or working. When I go home it seems like I just have to use the time to schedule appointments and make quick visits to family. I don't really get a time to relax or enjoy seeing friends and family. I've also skipped on family vacations in the past few years because my school schedule didn't align with the local high school district. I feel like I haven't had a break in years. I want to spend time with my family and especially my grandparents as they're old. My grad school will be a 20 hour drive or a $3-500/4hr flight. In January, I started dating a Junior at my college who will continue next year. He lives in another country (is a citizen here though) and we've agreed to a LDR. However, I wish I would have had the opportunity to develop our relationship further before trying out long distance. I'd also like to take some personal time to take a small vacation alone. I'd probably have to work a boring job for the semester off and would be frustrated, but it may also help me pay off my student loans. Does anyone have advice in this matter and is it unreasonable to ask if it's possible to start in the spring for personal reasons? My advisor is really nice and is open to grad students pursuing internships or staying an extra year, but I don't know how the program would react. It may be too late when considering my funding is already laid out and they've probably started to put paperwork into motion.

nguyen16041 got a reaction from SoCali in Has anyone taken chemistry online?
I took it online this semester at Cal State Fullerton with professor Byrne. It wasn't difficult but there was A LOT of busy work, so generally we had about 1 participation assignment, 1 homework, 1 quiz, 1 WileyPlus -- this is scattered throughout the weeks (sometimes we would have like four things due and others 1 or 2, varies throughout the week).
BUT, I know that I had an easier experience than some of my friends that took it in person and had to sit through 3 hour lectures.... I would suggest doing chem online.

I have always struggled with chemistry, bio and all the other sciences are fine, I just have always found chem to be very dry... so that made the class a bit challenging so I could never focus. Thank goodness my professor just tested us by multiple choice - I knew some friends that had to actually had short answers ??? GIRL, I wouldn't even know where to begin. But I mean.... Online was the easy route, I thank goodness I did that. ??

Grow a thick skin. --Your supervisors will critique you in every way possible, suck it up. It's a learning experience...even if they hurt your feelings, their opinions do not define who you are. Your laptop is your lifeline. Connect your school email to every technology you own especially your phone. Phonetics and speech-language development is worth knowing. Get used to not being "perfect" in graduate school. You won't get kicked out for getting a B ? Graduate school is not hard, it's just time consuming.  Prepping for an articulation session takes longer than two hours (until you know your kiddo quite well and/or perfected a few habits). Your classmates/professors/staff members are your colleagues. You do not have to like them but be respectful. Do not burn bridges. Treat this experience like a job because it is. Do not gossip. Research is so important in graduate school. Learn how to read articles. Be flexible. Everything you planned for in your session will most likely by altered by that little 5-year-old in front of you. Another clinician is currently using an item you needed? Find a different toy/activity that can still elicit what you want. Your client is having a bad day? you might end up tossing your lessons away and doing whatever to get them back on track. You will find yourself doing the most silliest things ever just for that speech production.  Even after a month of therapy, you'll still be nervous to see your clients and have NO clue what you are doing. LOL. That two minutes you have until your session starts is still a lot of time. You'll adjust to working under pressure. You're a natural, trust me. You know more than you think you do.  GOOD LUCK!

My plan B was getting a Masters in Special Education. I accomplished that and applied a third and final time to a SLP program. I got in and 2 years later, finished grad school to become a SLP. I’m so grateful?

I had a two backup plans:
    1. Getting a SLPA license and applying next fall.
    2. Continue working at my job, instructional aide for SPED, and use this time to save up and retake the GREs to apply for next spring.

nguyen16041 reacted to Rivai in Is it possible to withdraw my admission acceptance to go to another school?
It is possible if you haven't taken the school's money, and someone who actually wants to go to that school will actually receive funding when you decline so please decline ASAP. As long as you haven't taken money, you don't really owe anything to the school; hence, you don't even need to say you're leaving for another school. Just write something along the lines of, "although I am grateful for your generous offer, I will not be able to join you in the following academic year due to unforeseen circumstances." You'll make an alternate very happy, trust me.

I hope this doesn't sound absurd, but being in a better place personally right now might be all you need. I know what it's like to be that caretaker and how much of a toll it can take on you. Why not try again now, and see where you are? I did not study for the GRE and was just in the right "zone" when I took it. It might go better this time without having to do much ore prep.

Stay positive. I know it's soooo hard to. But please do. There's no point in stressing, what's going to happen still happening. I know it is difficult, trust me I have received MANY rejections this cycle. But please keep your head up and keep having faith and hope. It's not May 10 just yet and you have no idea what's coming your way.

Don't stress about it! I'm sure they are sending e-mails in waves and this helps them monitor their list better.
We still have a long time before May 10 and you will for sure hear by then.
Also, it's important to consider they look at your application as a whole. One interview won't define you.
Hang in there, great things are coming your way!!!

@KE19I second this!! Most schools send emails in waves! I was very nervous in my interview too, and probably sounded super awkward but we have to remember that they picked to interview us because we are competitive applicants! I wish you and everyone here the best of luck!

YAY! Thank goodness it is going fast, I hate how most programs drag this process out for months. (I understand why they need to, but waiting is so draining.)
Glad to hear your interview went well! Out of curiosity, If you guys are accepted, will you accept their offer?

I had my interview today. Definitely laid back like @nguyen16041 mentioned so that’s again for that heads up!
I was informed though that they are hoping to have decisions out by next week. Love how fast things seem to be going with them. Best of luck everyone!!

I agree. SLPAs in CA don't even start at 40k so a CF shouldn't be anywhere near that.  I know a few CFs started off between 65-70k.

Your GRE is WAY TOO LOW. Retake it! Surely you can get at least a 150+ on the Verbal section.

EDIT: Your score is only good for 5 years anyway! Study, study, study and retake it!

think of it this way: in a few years, when you're an slp, NO ONE will care whether or not you got in right away or off the waitlist. all that matters is you're in! they simply didn't have space before, and now that they do, they want YOU. you're gonna rock it!
