mphxpsych reacted to psyc2020 in 2022-2023 Clinical Psychology Applications - Canada
School: York University
Type: Clinical-Developmental Psychology MA/PhD
Acceptance/Waitlist/Rejection: Acceptance
Type of Notification: Official Email
Date Notified: 2/04/2022
This is my fourth cycle and it still doesn't feel real! I cannot believe it, truly. I had given up last year but thought I would try once more. If anyone has any questions, don't hesitate to reach out. This is your reminder that the path may not be linear, might take longer than you anticipated, but if this is really your route then continue working towards it!

Does anyone here know anything about the University of Alberta's SCCP program (sorry I know it isn't a clinical program but thought some people here might have also applied to it)? I am not sure when to expect to hear from them.
On a different note I received an acceptance from York's CD program on Friday! Very exciting as it is 5 years in the making. I'm just figuring out what my priorities are before I decide if I want to accept or not. So a spot might open up with AP yet ?

Just a friendly reminder to those that may be receiving rejection letters.....
There are so many additional amazing career opportunities that exist out there!! Not being accepted into a program this year doesn't mean you won't have a fulfilling career. You can apply again, and the time until then is not time wasted.
:) ❤️

So here it goes...
School: Dalhousie University
Type: Clinical Psychology PhD
Acceptance/Waitlist/Rejection: Acceptance
Type of Notification: Official Email
Date Notified: 1/11/22
Gaaaaah... it's only been a decade of work to get here (no, I'm not kidding) and I was starting to feel really old.
After receiving the email I was half numb and half freaking out and kept asking everyone if it's normal. It doesn't really feel real yet and I'm still in anxious/panicky mode somewhat. However, I do plan on taking the weekend off and just unwind. Get in touch if you're considering Dal or just have questions, I'm around.

School: Simon Fraser University
Date of invite: Jan 10
Date of interview: Prior to Feb 1st
Virtual open house: Jan 27
School: UTSC
Date of invite: Jan 6/Jan 7
Date of (informal) interview: Jan 7/Jan 10
These were both informal interviews with two cosupervisors I had put down.
School: McMaster
Date of invite: Dec 23
Date of (informal) interview: Jan 6
Another informal interview.
Just as a note: this is my third year applying and I have never had any interviews prior to this, so I am feeling quite relieved after so much rejection. I am happy to be at this point in the process, at least, and am crossing my fingers that I can make it further. I genuinely wish everyone the best of luck - please try to stay focused, positive, and forward-thinking. It's so easy to feel dejected and doubtful of your own abilities throughout this process.

I also want to pipe in on the holiday break. I'm a current program student and I can tell you my advisor(s) started emailing me back today, late afternoon - for things that I emailed over the break and ongoing things that need some pretty urgent attention. They are JUST getting back to their computers and have to play catch up with the 12 000 emails they missed and get their bearings. Likely admission committees will be coming together soon - but often the actual POI you are hoping reads your application and reaches out to you doesn't even know your application exists yet. It has nothing to do with your application, they just aren't there yet. Give it some time. Then the whole fiasco with omicron and lots of schools have shifted online, some activities had to apply for exemptions for in-person, last-minute faculty meetings to figure it out. It's a mess. It will take a hit on delaying everything. I truly do get how anxiety-inducing this waiting limbo season is - I don't anything has remotely compared to how anxious I felt this time last year, but I hope this helps at least one person even feel a little better.

Current student here- this question is common but imo it’s more about how well you can think through the components of a project (i.e. what could be feasible, what population would you sample from (and why), does your question show that you understand the area of research, etc.).. I was asked this question and it turned into more of a convo to learn about the lab/current projects. It’s a hard question but useful for you too it’s also important for you as an applicant to make sure they have space for your interests!
Feel free to msg if you have more questions about this (or anything else)

Incoming student here! I just wanted to throw in my two cents that the response (or lack of lol) to any initial contact emails you send is so dependent on the supervisor - the supervisor I'll be working with didn't respond when I sent an email of interest last fall and I think it's pretty common to not hear anything because they get so many emails. Obv much easier said than done, but don't let it discourage you so early on in the cycle!

I wouldn't let one bad grade stop you from applying! It's really not the end of the world, especially since its organic chemistry which isn't a psychology course. I got a D in a required philosophy/cognition course in my third year and I was accepted to a competitive clinical program this year. That grade didn't come up in any of my interviews so honestly I don't think anyone cared or noticed. Maybe if you had a pattern of less than stellar grades then that would be something you should address in your LOI but I wouldn't even bring this up if its a one off grade in an irrelevant class. GPA is just one component of admission requirements. You can also chose to take the GRE (it looks like many schools are dropping it for next cycle though?) and strong scores may help offset a "weaker" GPA- although again one bad grade isn't going to determine whether you get in or not.
I found that many POIs were generally more lax about having a strict GPA cutoff, preferring to focus holistically on research experience, life background, applied skills, scientific literacy, personality fit, etc. when choosing potential candidates. If you're still concerned about this grade you can work towards buffing up other components on your application ahead of the next cycle to lessen the impact of this grade.
TLDR: I don't think it's a big deal, you should definitely apply if you want to go into clinical!

I would email the PI and state your interest in connecting with your new lab mates and see if she can facilitate it by giving you some emails.

Hi everyone! This is super late because I wanted to wait until I got my official notice.
School: OISE
Type: CCP
Acceptance/Waitlist/Rejection: Acceptance
Type of Notification: Email to check portal
Date Notified: Unofficial notice from POI on March 24 and official acceptance email April 8
DM for POI: Yes!
Just for some perspective, this is not my first time applying. I ended up doing a totally different Master's in between and learned so much. This time around, I only applied to this one program because it was the research I'm passionate about and I'm super grateful it worked out!

This is great advice! I will also add that during my gap years I sought paid RA work by scanning the jobs posted in research hospital's websites. For instance in the Toronto area this meant looking through Baycrest, CAMH, Unity Health, UHN, Sunnybrook etc. webpages. Often things come up on their site that do not come up on Indeed. However, ultimately I got my RA jobs through word of mouth. As an example, I interviewed for an RA job at a major hospital but was not offered the position. The PI I interviewed with liked me though and referred me to a colleague who hired me in their lab at the same hospital. Utilize your prof/volunteer recourses and let them know your'e looking for RA work! They may know someone in your area of interest. Good luck!
