  1. Tons of questions. Zero answers.

  2. Haha! I like how your mom is all nonchalant about it even though you've been waiting for ages to find out.
  3. Agh, people say that to me all the time too! Or they think that grad school is just College 2.0 and that I simply don't want to be in the "real world." Please. Grad school is a job. I'll just happen to get paid less, work long hours, and learn constantly about things I enjoy.
  4. Thank you! I hope so too! Maybe at CAA or RSA one of these coming years
  5. I'm still at my quota for up votes. Doesn't the GC know I want to spread the love??
  6. Oops.
  7. This week is the winner of all the weeks!!
  8. Researching UDel. Might as well be renamed "Heaven." ... :D Will the happy crying stop?!

Enjoy every single one of those happy tears!

  9. That's what I thought, too -- 3-4 students. It seems like there's more than that this year but I guess they probably over-admit to see who declines? Anyway, ahh! That's exciting! UDel has an agreement with Bryn Mawr where grad students can take classes there at no extra charge, so.... All you Bryn Mawr folk, let's meet! Eventually. ... When school starts. ... In AUGUST! School y u so far away?
  10. Thank you! I noticed that Bryn Mawr seems to have admitted tons of students this year. (Perhaps I'm remembering the results incorrectly.) Did they admit people without funding?
  11. Ahh!!! The love!!! Thank you everyone! I'm so happy to have this wonderful community of fellow aspiring art historians to share in this triumphant moment with! It means so much! The acceptance is that much more sweet after 10 straight rejections from my non-dream-schools. Thank you for the support over the past couple months and listening to my often incessant downer posts and sending well wishes. I feel like I'm on top of the world! I ran out of my daily upvotes too soon I have so many posts to up, because you guys are awesome! And you kept me sane. Thank you!
  12. Friends!!! I have to tell you -- you may have already seen in my blog, but I want to post here for good measure. I got into my dream school (UDel)!!!! I was admitted to the MA (applied to PhD) but they are extremely generous with their financial offer and I just cannot wait to start! I'm so excited!!! After all this time! On the 21st of March! I thought all hope was lost, but here they are, rescuing me from despair. I burst into tears just thinking about it. I wonder if the elation passes. Thank you all for all of your support these past few, terrible months. You're the best!
  13. I want to cry. I typed up a HUGE entry for you guys and it disappeared!!!! :(

  14. GUYS! OMG. I missed a call from my POI (called about 17 min ago) and he didn't leave a message. Do I assume it's a butt call? Do I call back? My voicemail is extremely obvious and I have no new emails... Ahhh!!!!

Fingers crossed! All you need is one school to say yes

  18. If my dream school has me on some sort of wait list, I hope someone turns down their offer. I hope that doesn't make me a terrible person. :( On the other hand, if they're genuinely still making decisions, then I hope they turn into the Road Runner. ;)

Think about it this way, if they turn down the offer maybe it is because they got into their dream school!

everyone who is waitlisted at their dream school hopes someone turns down their offer. It makes you normal. :P

Haha! psychdork, that's awesome. Win-win. I'm glad I'm normal... now if only normalcy was synonymous with patient :P

  19. AMEN to all this. I think you hit the nail on the head. Especially with that last sentence. I couldn't agree more if I tried... I can't stand these articles. They're so jaded!
  20. Thank you mikelauriearthist!!! Made my day!
  21. I read a similar article, also by William Pannapacker (the article you quoted was in his pen name) that he wrote last year and it flew me into a rage. I cannot stand his articles. I don't understand him. This is how I deal/dealt with it. I too wouldn't pursue a PhD unless it was fully funded. That amount of loans, for me, simply isn't something I could ever justify. However, luckily many PhD programs here in the States admit with funding (at least in art history). When you get discouraged, you have to just keep reminding yourself that you're dedicating yourself to years of specialized study because you enjoy what you do and enjoy pursuing and creating knowledge. That's what I remind myself. You know if graduate school is something that you can and should dedicate yourself to for the betterment of your self or your career or both, and articles like this shouldn't deter you if indeed graduate study is what you really want. Jobs will come. It's scary, I admit that. I'm terrified of graduating and then being on the job market. But at least I'll have achieved the first part of my goal (the PhD), and I can worry about jobs when the time comes, maybe a year or two before actual matriculation. I hope this is helpful or encouraging. Chin up! Edited because the formatting was crazy. Double edit: He's written at least 2 articles saying the exact same thing -- this one, in 2009, and the one I read, in 2011 -- and probably some in between. I feel like he's made it his life's work to tell people NOT to go to graduate school.
  22. Rejected from UMD. Argh!
  23. I agree, but they specifically asked. I'm not sure if this is good or bad, but it seems like they want me there.
  24. Well... Essentially, my dream school is the only one left to make me a PhD offer. I'm not kidding. This seems like a very scary position to be in.

That's what happened to me last year but in the end I got the offer. That is what matters. You don't have to decide until April 15th.
