Yeah so true. I was worried about this, too. I did get full funding and TA in my admissions letter, so I wasn't sure if once you were in the program there were other ways to secure funding for the next year. Some of the students I spoke said they were able to secure funding all 4 years, but definitely concerning.

Yes, the ones I spoke to said the same thing where they got funding the first year, but not the second. They rotate on who gets funding and that’s one thing they said they wished they’d known. For me, it would suck to have to worry about it each year.

Lol. They asked "which one of the three unforgivable sins best describe you? ? Something along the lines of that. If I am remembering correctly. It was definitely about sins. I do think it was the unforgivable sins or some sort of sins relating to religion. What was your question?

It was something like, “select one of these characteristics/personalities and that best matches you and tell me why. You have to choose one... “

I only remember these two.
Narcissist, Epicaricacy

i forgot the other one.

Thought about it... but after talking to a few 1st and 3rd year students, the funding is inconsistent. One year you might get it, another you won’t. Same was said with professors. That was a factor for me :(

I think many programs are inconsistent with funding. Both the schools I have offers with, it isnt unheard of for a student to go without funding for a year of their program (usually the first)

At Ohio State it sounds like after the first year it is hard to not find funding but only about half the first years do.

At Indiana University they work really hard to find funding for you and in the last few years only a few (they said students who only sought limited opportunities or chose not to get funding from a GA) students have not found funding their first year. Assistantships at IU are renewable if you like the position and do a satisfactory job. Plus, if they can't find you funding in one year you become a priority the next.

If Montana is willing to work with you to find external funding (outside of the psych department) I would not be too worried about going there. It seems pretty common in school psychology and the more help you get from a department for funding the more the program will likely be willing to support you through other endeavors.

This is the biggest reason I am likely (almost 100%) going to Indiana. The support they have given me has been so helpful and left me much less stressed.

Hello, everyone! I hope you're all doing well!

I accepted an offer of admission today, so I wanted to update everyone.

This cycle, I applied to 9 PhD programs. I received 5 interviews (U of Cincinnati, Illinois State, U of Maryland, Georgia State, and U of Florida). All of the programs I interviewed with were amazing and so welcoming. Ultimately, I was rejected from Maryland, waitlisted at Florida, and haven't received a decision from Georgia, but withdrew my application.

I received two admission offers, one from The University of Cincinnati, and one from Illinois State University. I just rejected my admission offer from Illinois, so hopefully that will help someone on the waitlist! I officially accepted my offer at UC yesterday as it is my top choice. It's a great program, fully funded, and close to where my boyfriend will be attending medical school, so I feel extremely fortunate. If anyone here has also accepted at UC, please feel free to reach out to me!

I hope everyone here finds their place, as well, and I wish everyone the best of luck! I'm rooting for all of you :)

Congratulations!

When did you hear back from Illinois state? I interviewed for their Ed.S program and they said they’d get back to us by the end of last week, but I still haven’t heard anything.

Thank you!

I heard back from them on February 16th. My interview was on the 11th, so I had a pretty fast turnaround. Hoping you get good news!

Not sure if you wanna PM but I heard back from Illinois State on Monday of this week for their Ed.S program. They called me about my acceptance.

Hi guys, I have declined my offer at Lehigh and Tulane, so good luck to those who are waiting to hear back on the waitlist! I'm still trying to make my decision with three other schools but that is because funding is still being decided. I just wanted to say if you guys are on the waitlist some schools are just trying to figure out their funding for students, which is why people aren't declining offers as soon as they can. Hang tight guys.

Ugh. It had been two weeks since I applied to an Indiana university wide graduate associateship that my POI felt was right up my alley.

Just heard back from the director after I followed up that I was not selected to interview during the first round but that they sometimes circle back and invite people to interview if a candidate was not chosen. (They have multiple positions but still limited)

I still have 2 School of Education associateships I applied to that I am waiting to hear back but it still sucks.

I don't know if it makes financial sense to go to my dream school without funding the first year since it is out of state. Is anyone dealing with this too?

Did Lehigh offer funding?

The first year, they are uncertain about funding. You'll have to accept before knowing if you do and they aren't guarenteeing it either.

That’s really such an individual decision. I knew that I could not afford to take on more student loan debt, so I did not go with my top choice since funding wasn’t guaranteed (I later found out that I was chosen for a fellowship, but it was only for 1 year). I didn’t want the stress of trying to figure out funding each year. I ultimately decided to go with a fully funded program that still was a good fit. The research alignment at my top choice was super exciting, but I was still able to go with a program and mentor that will support me in exploring my research interests even if they aren’t 100% aligned. I went through this process last year and I don’t regret my choice at all. Funding was a top priority for me.

That makes sense. The problem is that I was not accepted into any fully funded programs this round (I was rejected from a few). The choice I have currently (obviously I could find funding over the next month or so since fellowship and assistantships haven't been allocated) is between my out-of-state #2 Indiana (rejected from #1) program and my in-state #4 Ohio State and I was waitlisted at my #3 Buffalo.

Other programs way down on my list I could not see myself attending I rejected interviews since I would rather pay in state for the first year at Ohio State than attend a program that did not fit my interests.

Funding is a huge priority for me but I am lucky to have a partner to be moving with that will offset some of the living expenses if I cannot find funding.

I have considered (briefly) taking another year off but from my research there is only 1 fully funded program that truly meets my career and research interests (UW-Madison). I applied to a couple fully funded ones this round that were in the general realm of my goals but they could tell that I had different interests and rejected me. I think with the loan forgiveness out there I might be able to make having 1 unfunded year work.

Has anyone who interviewed at Loyola Chicago's PhD program heard anything yet? I know they said they aren't sending out offers until they know about funding, and it seems like funders this year are slow to answer...but it's been about a month and I'm just anxious!

Nope, I haven’t heard yet either. I check multiple times a day! ? I’m waiting to decide on another offer until I hear from them!

Just rejected a spot on the waitlist (they said it was short) for UMass-Boston to hopefully open up a spot for someone else. My fiance was not accepted into one of the 2 MSW programs in Boston he applied to so I would be unable to attend.

Best of luck to anyone currently waiting!

Hi all!

I'm meeting with a potential PI today for a PhD program that I was accepted to. However, I was offered a position to join a lab other than the one I apply to work in. I did get to speak with this professor briefly on interview day, but I don't know as much about his lab and advising style as my first choice that I had anticipated getting. What are some questions I should be sure to ask and are there any red flags to look out for? This is my only offer at the moment so I will likely accept, but I was a bit caught of guard by the change in PIs.

I was notified via phone call a month ago that I was on the waitlist for a program. Would it be okay to email and let them know that I am still interested and ask if there are any updates, or should I just keep waiting?

Has anyone heard from Northeastern? They said they’d let us know by the end of last week so I’m getting super anxious...

Hi everyone! I was waitlisted from Fordham's PhD program. For those who were accepted and do not plan to attend, I kindly ask you to please decline the offer. I am hoping the committee reviews the waitlist. Fingers crossed!

I have not!

I am noticing all the programs I have applied to are taking longer to make decisions than expected.

I will post something when I hear from them!

Yeah, I'm waiting to hear from a couple now too. UNLV and Winthrop most notably. I'm just anxious because I need to start getting the wheels in motion to relocate.

Same! Alot of the more "graduate" friendly places that aren't shared living (you could probably find roommates) in college town/areas go fast starting in January. I understand programs taking their time but it is still a tad bit inconvenient.

My current problem is not knowing who will offer me funding (granted I'd probably go to my #1 if I don't get funding anywhere) and not wanting to commit until I know...

Hi, just an update from my earlier response, I was officially waitlisted today. Really hoping I get moved up, this is my #1! ??
