jkv152 Posted February 4, 2021 Author Posted February 4, 2021 Hey all, any Yale applicants? I saw that a few people received interviews and one person was accepted. I'm curious to know what departments the interviewees applied to. I'm wondering if it's for all of Film & Media studies or if they are specific to let's say, French and Film & Media studies.
Anoosh93 Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 So glad this thread exists!! I applied to USC UT-Austin UW-Seattle NYU Tisch UCSB University of Colorado-Boulder Indiana University Bloomington So far I have heard from UC Santa Barbara only and its a rejection sadly. Not a very positive response to begin with.

Hey I applied to Yale (English and Film and Media Studies), but haven’t heard anything yet! Which combination did you apply to? Also, I’m curious how you heard about those interviews/acceptance?

Also if you go to the top and select ‘Results’ it’ll bring you to the results page. Or just go directly to thegradcafe.com. You can search by school and see what results have been submitted publicly. It’s a blessing and a curse. I spend way to much time looking at results ?
ShivD Posted February 5, 2021 Posted February 5, 2021 I had written to UC Berkeley people a while back for the Film and Media Studies results. They said they will notify by early March. But going from the previous years' results, they start notifying by mid-Feb, I think. m00dyjewel and Shirley He 1 1

Yeah it does seem like the department send out acceptances by early February...

Universities are already under a lot of stress dealing with safety guidelines and teaching remotely (in some cases). Thank you for sharing this info about Berkeley. March feels so far away!
ShivD Posted February 6, 2021 Posted February 6, 2021 I guess it could be that. But also, who knows... it could be just their way of telling that everything will be done by March, so don't contact us again before that. And maybe they will actually start sending out at least their acceptances in Feb?! Let's see. Good luck to us! Although I've stopped thinking about UCB now.. given that they have massive funding issues, which is already very limited for international students anyway. So not counting on it...
andylee0427 Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 (edited) Hi, I'm really glad to see this thread existing. Here are my list of schools applied a month ago: University of Washington (first choice) University of Iowa University of Florida (English, but will be studying Film and Media Studies) University of Toronto I didn't apply to schools like Berkeley, NYU, or Yale, because I know my GPA and GRE scores aren't good enough to be competitive. Also, It seems that a lot of people in this thread have applied to UW. Scared of the competition with some of you (especially this year, which has been fiercely competitive due to COVID), but good luck to you all! If one of you received an interview offer from UW in end of February or early March, please let me know! Edited February 7, 2021 by andylee0427 delong 1
nocera Posted February 7, 2021 Posted February 7, 2021 Hey everyone, it's nice to see a FMS thread. I saw some people have asked about Yale for the combined PhD program. I will be attending (hopefully in person) this fall. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! FYI: My department is Italian Studies.

Best of luck with the upcoming year! nocera 1
nocera Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Thank you! And, yes I completed my MA in 2020 in Italian Studies with a specialization in Film and Media Studies. I have one publication and participated at a few conferences. If you want more specific details about my profile or FMS in general etc., feel free to send me a PM! It's a tough process waiting, especially this year. On the bright side, it seems like the majority of admissions decisions go out in February.
Meowsdower Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 Glad to see this thread! Thought I would update if anyone was waiting for Canadian universities I applied at UBC, York, and the Ryerson/York communication and culture split program. I had an interview with UBC at the end of Jan, and was accepted at York this week (?) ! good luck everyone!

For the other programs you applied to, did you apply specifically to Italian studies with a concentration in FMS, or FMS with a concentration in Italian? I understand Yale is unique in the way they offer their combined programs.

With COVID, options were limited this year, so I tried to apply to a handful of programs where I thought I could carry out an interdisciplinary course of study. I applied to more FMS/Screen Studies programs in Europe, specifically programs that emphasized film criticism and theory. What are your main interests?

I was also concerned about limitations due to COVID, but we're all working through it. I applied to American universities exclusively. I'm married and I had to be mindful of my wife's career too. My interests are in psychoanalysis and queer theory. I've done a lot of work with Freud and recently I have spent time researching Winnicott, who focuses on infancy and early childhood. I'm particularly interested in queer family representation and finding a way to queer Winnicott's theory to fit modern families.

It was pretty basic questions: Why do you want to do a PhD/Why this school? What do you want from a supervisor? Are you interested in teaching? What are your short term and long term career goals? What are your strengths and weaknesses? What drew you to your research topic/field? And more specific questions about my research history/MA thesis. Hope this helps! andylee0427 1
jk25 Posted February 8, 2021 Posted February 8, 2021 How is it that the Masters students have already gotten a reply from USC? When should PhD students expect to get a reply?

When should PhD students expect to get a reply? So many things have not been following previous years' patterns. I feel as if it's a particularly tricky year in which universities are juggling an elevated number of applications against a diminished number of spots, alongside all the consequences that come with budget cuts. Who knows? Maybe they're emphasizing master's students because they're "less expensive" than PhD candidates. According to the responses on this website, several PhD applicants to USC have been forwarded to their MA, and more so than in previous rounds. I'm personally over trying to understand what the universities are doing and with what timeline; it was driving me nuts. What will be will be jk25 1
Eggsy Posted February 9, 2021 Posted February 9, 2021 Hi I'm Eggsy, freshman to this website and an international student in China. I have applied to USC/NYU/Columbia/UTAustin/WUSTL/Chapman, all my applications are related to film and media studies or should I called cinema studies. Since in my undergraduate period I'm major in accounting but I want to change my career and major so I applied to master degree of film studies. I have received no information, no admission, no rejection and no waiting lists. When I saw people got offers of USC's cinema and media studies master degree I feel sad and nervous. Hope I can have a chance to get admitted by those schools...... do anyone know how many people will be admitted by those school's master degree? Thank u! Shirley He 1

Something like one more year of taking remote classes (including the TA ship online). I would like to get some info if you have some

I know most are hopeful to have in person learning in the fall, but it'll ultimately depend on how COVID develops...Trying to stay positive!
