DreamingMSW
So I had a random comment to make: I applied to two programs- social work and OT ( I am DEFINITELY leaning towards social work). Anyway, I also look at an OT forum and I have to say that the difference between the people on there and the people on here is insane. On here everyone is supporting one another and encouraging one another and on the OT forum it's like a huge competition- people laughing that they are getting interviews when others aren't etc. This is what pushes me towards social work- the fact that the people in the program seem to be so friendly and actually INCREDIBLE people. I am very turned off by what I see and have seen from the people in the OT programs. Unfortunately it seems that OT schools focus on grades as around 80% and experience for the other 20% which is very unfortunate as these are the people who will be helping many of the aging baby boomers. This system needs to be changed. BUT I am glad to say that social work takes experience way more seriously and realizes how important it is for someone to have experience and a kind heart for this career. Yay social work! It's funny you mention OT school... As I have mentioned previously on here, I was admitted to a couple MSW programs last year and deferred to 2013 for personal reasons. During that time, I worked for a not-for-profit program which works closely with OT's and I have been wondering if I should have applied to OT schools as well (I almost did this year, but decided against it at the last minute). nugget
I briefly considered OT since this field is similar to my area of study in undergrad, except that you can actually find a good job after graduating in OT. I also briefly used OT services at one time and got to see the kind of work that they do. Dalhousie has a good 2 yr master's program for people with a bachelor's in another area. You need to take a lot of courses in physiology, anatomy and biology, however, so I opted against it. I always preferred psychology, education and related areas so social work seems to be a much better fit. But for anyone who enjoys the sciences and likes helping people, this would definitely be a rewarding profession.

From what I hear its very hard to get a job after a degree in OT. I applied to OT last year but was flat out rejected. There's an 8-10 percent chance of acceptance into a program for OT. Peter Nincompoop
Did you work with an OT in mental health? I occasionally worked with mental health OT's, and I certainly worked with OT's whose clients had mental health problems, but the majority of them working our of local health units doing home visits. nugget
It probably depends what part of the country you live in. I see new job postings for OT at my hospital every few months. It's covered under worker's compensation in my province for people who have work-related accidents so there is a need for it. Ontario might be different. Did you mean can or can't? Peter Nincompoop
Hey guys, I am trying to find a summer job in the social services. Do you guys know of any jobs or where I can look? Thank you! The Charity Village website is a great place to look. You could also check the pages of local organizations who you would like to work for (i.e. the Salvation Army or whoever). happy888
I looked into it and it appears that acceptances were mailed out on April 4th - with is over a week earlier than this years acceptances mail-out. Hopefully by the end of next week, or within the first couple days of the first week of May, people will begin to hear something. Thanks for your advice. Kind Regards, Erin Also, in the wait-list letter from U of T, it states "Movement can happen anytime between the end of May to early September" so there's still time between when people decline their offer to the committee getting back together to review waitlist applicants and contacting people. Hang in there and don't lose hope yet!

michmenhennet
Well, I got some very happy news today and an offer to attend UVic. I had been eighth on the waitlist. This was my first choice, and so I have decided to withdraw from my spot at Dalhousie. If there is anyone here waiting on a spot at Dal, I've just opened one up, and maybe for you! I just wanted to say to everyone on this topic thank you for your support. It has been great having someone to commiserate and be anxious with. Now I am working on how I will balance full time work, school, and two little kids. Wish me luck!
