Just finished my Gatech QBioS pre-interview. They will send out on-site interview invitation on early January

Good luck. I am also preparing my pre-interview for Caltech system bio. What did they ask basically?

Thanks! They have a list of questions to ask everyone: In what part of biology you are most interested? The programing experience you most proud of. Your favorite analytical experience/course. Your favourite research experience, etc.

Thank you for these! That helps a lot!

Seems like very general questions. How long did it last?

Mine is 15 min. The professor said usually will be 30 min. but once  heard I had 5 classes today and have several finals ahead, the professor decided to make it quick.... I was also asked what courses I'd love to TA.

Undergrad Institution: Mid-Ranked Flagship State
Major: Cell Biology
Minor: Chemistry
GPA in Major: 4.0
Overall GPA: 4.0
Type of Student: Domestic Asian Male

GRE Scores:
Q: 169 (97%)
V: 168 (98%)
W: 5.0 (93%)

Research Experience: As of now, 2.5 years plant biochemistry and 1.5 years cancer biology (senior thesis) concurrently at home institution. 3 poster presentations at my school but no pubs.

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Scholarships, Phi Beta Kappa, small research grants from my school

Applying to Where:

UNC BBSP

Dartmouth MCB

Northwestern IBIS

Cornell BMCB

Duke CMB (offered interview 12/9)

UPenn CAMB

Princeton MolBio (offered interview 12/12)

List is full of reaches but I could always do another year of research if I don't get in. I feel like my stats are solid but I'm concerned about my (in)ability to interview and explaining a lot of my research experience being unrelated to what I want to study in the future (cancer/disease treatment). It looks like I'm going to have to practice interviewing over winter break...

Hi all, I've been lurking for a while before wanting to post my status... I am not sure if I would get an offer from one of the programs I applied.

Undergrad Institution: a top 9 Chinese university(definitely not top 2; I think it's safe to say top 5 actually)
Major(s): Pharmacy(mainly focusing on pharmacology)
Minor(s):
GPA in Major: 3.97/4.0
Overall GPA:3.91/4.0
Position in Class: top 5%
Type of Student: Female, International; also belong to honor college in our school (but maybe not helps...)

GRE Scores (revised/old version):
Q: 170
V: 160
W: 4.5
B:

TOEFL Total: 107 (S 23)

Research Experience:

Mostly involved in cancer research

a 14-month experience in home institution (part time, mainly focused on 1 project)

an 8-month experience in a well-know cancer institute in US (full time, 2 projects)

one 5th author paper (a project I participated in home institution, but not my major focus)

one poster & oral presentation almostly totally unrelated to my research experience lol

Awards/Honors/Recognitions: Several Scholarships; in the honors program in our school

Pertinent Activities or Jobs: non

Any Miscellaneous Accomplishments that Might Help: non

Special Bonus Points: Maybe one of the RLs would help a lot

Any Other Info That Shows Up On Your App and Might Matter:

Applying to Where:

Harvard-BBS

UPenn-CAMB-cancer biology

Yale-BBS-MMPP

Weill Cornell-BCMB

Sloan Kettering- Biomedical Sciences (really love, but I don't count on it really)

Washington University in St. Louis- DBBS-MCB

Emory-Cancer Biology

Baylor College of Medicine-MCB

UT Southwestern- DBS

UT health science center-biomedical sciences(haven't submitted yet...)

University of Southern California- PIBBS

Oregon health science university- cancer biology

The competition between international students would be even more fierce, and I have no idea whether these programs would be friendly to international students... I would appreciate it if someone could give some information regarding these programs. And, is there some other safer programs, whose deadline is in January? Thanks very much!

Wow our profiles are REALLY SIMILAR (except I did my undergrad in US as a intl student), and our school lists have many overlaps. Hope both of us can hit some interviews somewhere. Good luck!

Hey, fellow international student here. I've done a bit of digging when I was finalizing my program list to figure out which schools have more spots open for international students. I looked at mostly immunology programs but the situation might be similar for cancer bio programs, especially if both are tracks under an umbrella program. Here's what I found. Keep in mind that usually about 30% of all applicants are international.

Harvard BBS says they have about 30% international students in their program, so they might review internationals and Americans at the same time.

Yale BBS says they admit 5-7% of international students who apply, which probably sounds worse than it actually is if you think about the number of students who apply there.

UPenn CAMB has about 12% of international students in the program. I was told that they review international students separately, but again, 12% is better than most places.

I didn't look at MSK, but based on what I know about Rockefeller, Weill Cornell, NYU and New York schools in general, they're very international student friendly.

WUSTL DBBS has about 30% international in their program, if I remember correctly. Might be wrong about this one.

Emory immunology does not have a whole lot of international students, if I remember correctly. It might be different for cancer bio if their programs are offered through the department.

Hope this is helpful and good luck!

Thanks very much for your info! These programs are indeed hard to reach… just hope some, or even just oe of them, would accept me… good luck to you too!
