  1. Got my second rejection today. This one hurts a little more. I applied to some far-reach schools that I'm not expecting to get into (Stanford, UCLA, UCSD), but UC Davis was within my reach (I had the exact stats they were looking for!). UC Davis has a great program, in a great little town. I knew I wasn't a traditional student, but was hoping they could see my passion and other great qualities. Unfortunately I received my rejection earlier this morning I'm feeling really bummed about it... more so than if/when I'm rejected from my far-reach schools. I want to feel happy for the admits, but I'll need to shake off this "woe is me" feeling first...
  2. My application with UC Irvine was "under review", then it changed to "being reviewed" a week later (how are they different?!), and it's been under "being reviewed" since late January. On the flip side, UC Davis's website didn't tell me anything (other than "you materials have been received") until today - when it says it's being reviewed! Wait - is it actually being reviewed?
  3. Non-phil grad applicant here, just lurking around and read dfindley's thread... comedic gold. Thank you for livening up my Tuesday afternoon.
  4. Go excited to go on vacation on Thursday... it'll take my mind off of waiting!

  5. OH MAN! I wish I knew about this program. I'm a chem major, going into materials science. Had no idea this program existed, or else I definitely would have applied. Thankfully I've already been accepted to a school, but if not, I would have applied next year. I'll be sharing this program with my non-eng friends, in case they want to get a MS in an engineering discipline. Fight on, my non-UG eng brothers and sisters.
  6. Thanks! Just today I saw my Davis app has been moved from "completed" to "under review"... here's to hoping I'll hear something soon. Last app cycle, UCSD's notifications were all spread out - some acceptances came as late as April 11th(and a few came in late March). It's OK that you haven't heard anything yet.
  7. ... more than 4?!... holy moley. I figured most people applied to at least 5 schools.
  8. So bizarre. I've had real-life friends unfriend me from Facebook, totally unannounced. I guess it's a passive-aggressive way of saying, "I don't want to put any effort into a friendship." So... I just let it go. Don't make any effort to strike up friendly conversations, don't invite him/her out to events. And don't lose any sleep over it! It's not worth it - when it comes to friends, quality over quantity.
  9. Throw in fresh chicken and asparagus into a pan, top both with some olive oil&salt&pepper, put in the oven at 400F for ~ 15 minutes... it's a healthy and simple meal!
  10. Still waiting on 4 schools - I went to the Results page to determine when the admission decisions will come out. Unfortunately there's not a lot of information, but I get the idea I shouldn't hear back until starting next week (spanning into mid-April). It's helped me calm down a little bit... I'm not checking the Results page as often. I now know it doesn't "mean anything" that I haven't heard back.
  11. GeoDUDE!, I don't mean to sound nitpicky, but did you mean to say power shouldn't be a concern? It seems like the rest of the paragraph advocates for battery life/quality over power. Or maybe I'm a little sleep deprived.
  12. Joker88, I'm sorry to hear about the UCSB rejection - but congrats on the Davis acceptance! I would love to go to UC Davis (it's one of my top choices, as well as UCSD). When did you hear from UC Davis? Also, did you apply to PhD or Masters?
  13. Haha! I get emails from NYU, but it makes sense for me... didn't know they sent out those emails to everyone.
  14. Hmm. If the deadline was very recent, I would probably deduce that your application hasn't been looked at quite yet. But it's been a while since December 1st. Maybe it means the Department has finished reviewing but the school needs to check? I'm sorry, I only have guesses.
  15. "He has a 5 year plan!" "What, 'Don't Die'?!"
  16. @phdcandidate022014, that is an extremely interesting link with lots of information I haven't seen before. It's helped me put some programs into perspective. Thanks for sharing.
  17. Nothing from Stanford... looks like I'll have to wait a little longer for MS results
  18. Never knew Speech Pathology grad programs were so popular! (no judgement, just an observation from the Results page)

maybe applicants for those programs are just more likely to use gradcafe. interestingggggg

We should research it and draw up some stats.

  19. When was the application deadline?
  20. California born and bred as well - no one ever talked about San Diego State? Or San Jose State? Or Sonoma State?
  21. Thank you - I was considering Los Feliz as well. It seems like those areas are affordable, walkable, close to USC and relatively safe. Also excited to look into public transit as well. Which streets have bars/cafes/shops/night life? I'm only considering a separate bedroom/junior bedroom because my boyfriend will not be a student, and I cannot study with a TV in the room. Good to know there is a 24/7 library for late-night studying. Will also ask USC about offices/storage spaces.
  22. Safer than Larchmont Village?
  23. BUMP! I have some questions about neighborhoods around USC, and the school in general: - I was born and raised in LA, but stuck to my bubble (west of the 405, north of the 10). I'm woefully unknowledgeable about the neighborhoods surrounding USC (I will be living off campus with my boyfriend). I was thinking of Silverlake, Echo Park, possibly Larchmont Village for possible neighborhoods to live. Also open to Culver City/Playa Vista areas if I take the expo line. - Having a solitary, quiet study space is important to me. Does anyone recommend having a separate bedroom for study purposes? Does USC give offices to their graduate students? Are the libraries open late?
  24. MS. Saw a string of acceptances for PhD in late January. Not sure if MS will come later, if at all.
  25. I applied to Stanford as well and am also waiting for a reply... although I won't get my hopes up
