  1. In using the analogy of an "endangered species" I'm also referring to the fact that funding has diminished over time and might continue the trend. But yes, I'm aware that many fully-funded programs exist.
  2. In my undergraduate English courses, most of my professors had a technology-free policy (this included e-readers; they wanted everyone to buy the actual books). Is this common for English grad seminars, or was my department just a little weird? I'd like to type my notes of the discussion and, like AP said, make them searchable.
  3. Makes sense. I'm just wary about buying certain things online because I've been screwed in the past...
  4. I'd imagine cohorts would form their own social media pages after they've met during orientation or something, but I could be wrong. What is your discipline?
  5. I've noticed that a lot of the stuff I've found on wayfair.com has incredibly low reviews and appears of very low quality. Has anyone gotten any of the cheaper items on wayfair and been happy with it?
  6. Yeah my final year was rough as well, and my year off made me eager to go back. I'm glad I did it.
  7. I accepted my offer today. I'm in the English department.
  8. This afternoon I formally accepted my offer from CU Boulder. Thanks for all of your assistance!
  9. So the writing center has funded positions and hourly positions...?
  10. Thanks! I've asked around and have already emailed someone about it, but how difficult is it to get a job at the writing center?

    Boulder, CO

I have a few friends that live in Broomfield and their rent is a lot lower than what you'd find in Boulder. They are fifteen-twenty minutes (no traffic) from Boulder and Denver. Lousiville, Westminster, etc. are similar I've been told.
  12. Congrats. Maybe I will see you there in the fall.
  13. Update: I got in! Currently biting my nails and trying to make decisions...
  14. Yeah Jessica told me that not all of the applicants who were offered funding have accepted their offers. If enough of them choose to go somewhere else, I'm assuming they will just pass it down the line? I have already received other emails about positions on campus, though.
  15. I took a year off and applied during that time, but I saw this was true for a lot of my friends that applied as undergrads.
  16. A professor I admire very much (he later wrote one of my letters of recommendation) talked me into taking time off. It was one of the best decisions I've ever made. Granted, I only took a year, but it allowed me to get my priorities straight and save some money. He put it this way: If you don't miss it once you're gone, don't go back.
  17. Still deciding between Georgetown and another program, but my bf and I are looking for a roommate if we move to the DC area.
  18. Yeah I went back and looked at their website, and Georgetown fully-funds half of their MA students. My other current offer is only partially funded, and I'm waitlisted for the same program underwater is attending. Either way, I wouldn't be in a fully-funded program. Plus, I feel like the funded MA is an endangered species at this point, just from researching for this past admissions season. I'm still speaking with someone at Georgetown to see what my options are financially, though.
  19. That makes sense. But Georgetown has much better faculty in my field than my other option, so I feel that they would do a better job helping me achieve all of these things you've mentioned. I appreciate your input.
  20. Thanks! The department hasn't been fantastic with communication (I had to email them and discover on my own that I've been waitlisted, not sure if that's common), so that's really helpful.
  21. I'm trying to figure out how much the institution matters to adcoms at a PhD level. I've seen a lot of people on the forum say that it doesn't matter where you get your MA, but I've only ever seen that here on the forum. If there's any truth to that, I don't want to incur $60k+ of debt. That's more of where I'm coming from.
  22. I've been accepted into an MA program at Georgetown and I'm trying to figure out housing, public trans, etc. Most of these posts are from 2006 so I'm going to assume that at least some of that info isn't accurate anymore?

    Denton, TX

UNT alum here. I (and other friends) have had the best luck finding cheap housing on craigslist. Around this time of year, people will start posting apartments with leases ending May-August. Check out Scott Brown, Jimmy Chang, and Place to Be properties. Those companies own a lot of properties in Denton. As far as things to do, Denton is constantly changing. When I moved here four years ago, Fry St and the square looked entirely different than they do now. There's always new bars and such popping up, and there are concerts every night (not an exaggeration). It is a smaller town though. The town definitely dies during school breaks and many businesses even have shortened summer and holiday hours. I'll be living in Denton until the end of May so feel free to ask me any other questions you might have.
  24. Anyone heard from the waitlist at CU Boulder for their MA? I'm postcolonial, but I'm not sure how much weight specific areas of study hold in MA admissions decisions.
