  1. Hey @mbf what do you mean by loan forgiveness going to shit? My best friend has a ton of debt and has been trying to pay it off for years now. I suggested she look into that. Do you think its a waste of time?
  2. @twinguy7 What a small world I worked for TES too! I agree the district is the better way to go in regards to pay and benefits. Are you working for a district now as an SLP?
  3. Twinguy, how did you go about it? I was completely unaware of this waiver until I posted my resume online and a company contacted me and told me about it. They contracted with Charter schools and some district schools. They took care of it all I just filled out the paperwork. If you are in the southern CA region I can email you the company if you'd like to apply.
  4. I went to CSUN for undergrad as well and it definitely can be a nightmare at times when trying to get classes. There are ways to get priority registration though that you can look into if you are accepted! It would just require some extracurricular activities around campus I also did the waiver! You can only do it for 2 years (must take the CBEST and explain why you're not in grad school lol) but once you're in the grad program I believe you can keep applying for it and do both if you can manage.
  5. West Texas A&M is more or less 10k a year and rent is looking to be around $500-600 for a 1 bedroom which I will split with my boyfriend. Not too shabby but then again I am moving from Los Angeles to the middle of nowhere in TX. Pros and cons I guess.
  6. Woohoo!! I'm on the same boat. Still have to hear back from ENMU but I think I would rather go to WT FYI, the woman I spoke to on the phone told me to get my immunization shots, and CPR certificate ready as they will be asking for that around May!
  7. I had the same feeling and emailed the department to make sure there was nothing else I needed to do to move forward. They reassured me accepting the offer was the only action to take and to wait for further instructions. Personally, I'm glad we don't have to put a deposit!
  8. Has anyone heard from ENMU? I haven't heard anything and I am dying to know! Even though I probably won't be going I can't move on until I know the answer lol
  9. I took a few pre-reqs with ENMU (neuro and language science). I found it to be the cheapest school as well. Neuro was really tough but I think that class in general is tough and language science was easy. They are completely online and only some are proctored. The neuro class only had the final exam proctored (which was easier than the other exams) and language science was not proctored at all. I have only taken two classes at a time during summer (&worked 10 hrs/week) and that was enough for me. I think depending on which classes you are combining I would not take more than 2-3 since they are short and accelerated it can be easy to fall behind. Given that this field is so incredibly competitive you want to ensure you get all A's so I wouldn't push it.
  10. Looks like we both got bad news! Thankful for my 1 acceptance though! Lol.
  11. This is my 2nd time applying. I don't have the best stats by any means. First round I didn't do as much research and applied to 8 schools. Rejected and waitlisted. 2nd time around I did more research into schools- I also applied to way less for financial reasons and got 1 acceptance so far!! In the meantime, I took pre-reqs I was missing and formed bonds with current professors and supervisors to get better LORs. I also took more time on my personal statement and worked as a SLPA for 4 years. Don't give up hope! It took me 4 years after undergrad to gain the courage to just apply because of all the horror stories I heard! It is tough but doable! Good luck
  12. I am also waiting to hear from ENMU. No word yet :/
  13. Still no word from NM state? I saw one person post about it on the results page. I am dying to know!
  14. Yes totally! I got different letters of rec this time around and I really think they helped me. Good luck!!
  15. I agree with what everyone is saying. Also, look into schools that don't require GREs. Some are still just as competitive but its worth a shot if you're re-applying.
  16. Unfortunately, I did not get paid to teach English- I thought you needed to be certified for that but once I was there I was told by many people you can find work without it. I volunteered since my family is from Costa Rica I took it as an opportunity to volunteer/visit family/explore the country I am totally on the same page! My family can't financially help me which is why I become a SLPA. The pay is pretty good in CA and I got a ton of hands-on experience. Honestly though I don't know how much volunteer experience really helps. Only 1/3 schools I applied to gave me the opportunity to state any volunteer experience- the rest didn't ask. So didn't worry too much if it is impossible, you can find other ways to improve your app
  17. If you don't mind me asking, a full time job doing what? People keep telling me working while in grad school is impossible.. let alone full time! However, I am totally freaking out about bills and tuition as my parents can't financially help out.
  18. I chose to become a SLPA after undergrad because I needed a mental break from all the studying and stress. I feel that was the best choice I made. Not only do you get a ton of hands-on experience to solidify if you truly want to be an SLP before spending thousands but I also got great LORs from SLPs and supervisors. I also did the waiver Twinguy7 referred to but that is only for 2 years and you no longer can apply for it unless you are enrolled into a grad program.I took a few pre-reqs I needed that weren't required for my CD program but other schools did to boost my GPA (I did it through Eastern New Mexico online-super affordable). I taught English in Costa Rica over the summer and worked in a special needs camp to add to my volunteer experience. You still have a few schools to hear from, don't lose hope! But if all else fails take this next year to improve your application and do further research into schools. Hope this helps!
  19. I've heard West Texas A&M does the same thing and I believe Texas Tech is nearby so makes sense. Darn, that is such a bummer! At least you have other options!
  20. Thanks for your insight! I am possibly moving to Texas and had no idea I would have to do the hours all over again if I worked as a SLPA! That is such a bummer and so ridiculous.
  21. Out of curiosity, what about their clinical placements?
  22. I believe you still have to go through a SLPA program because they make you take classes on Code of Ethics, Roles & Responsibilities of a SLPA, etc. Good luck to you!
  23. I live in California and did a SLPA program where they did not help you find a placement to do your hours. I probably called around 15 places to find someone that would be willing to take me on. Eventually I found two SLPs who had their own practice (one EI and the other adults) that were willing to let me come in to observe and do therapy. You can try that- hopefully it won't be as difficult in your area! Definitely wouldn't pay to retake classes just for the hours though.
  24. I am late on this BUT just wanted to share in case anyone is looking for a Chemistry class. Shasta College has an online Chem for NON-science majors that I took last year and it was breeze! The professor was amazing and I actually enjoyed the class. Never thought I would say that about Chem lol.
  25. My stats aren't the best but got wait listed last year and finally accepted to a program. I recommend doing research on what schools you want to attend and emailing/calling asking them if your stats are similar to the average student they accept. Some schools kindly told me no (even though I met their minimum requirements) and others said yes. It doesn't hurt to ask and get the truth so you don't waste your time applying to schools that won't give you a chance. At least in my situation I appreciated not wasting money the 2nd time around.
