  1. @jamielee23 Now that you put it like that IU doesn't sound so bad that I would immediately avoid. If you have to take out $60k loan + cost of living it would slow your life down after graduation in terms of saving/buying a house/etc. IU is obviously the better choice financially, just make sure that students there actually find placements instead of getting screwed over! People always say go to the cheapest program possible but IF you are financially comfortable enough then you should go wherever you feel is a better fit which is probably Pitt
  2. So you only get one externship in total and have to arrange it yourself? That would turn me off a lot. Personally I prefer have more variety of placements so I can actually learn in the real world from different people/settings. Also, in the worst case scenario you would have to delay graduation due to not being able to find a placement. I suggest you reach out to current students to learn about their experiences. How much loans do you have to take out for each school? I would go with Pitt if it's not some insane number like 100k.
  3. Congrats! I was accepted to both as well and will be going to TC most likely. For me, the multicultural focus is a big draw because I intend to get the bilingual certification. I have talked to students at the NYU program and they said they liked it, but I didn't ask for much details. There are some posts on this forum that goes into more details with regards to the program at NYU so you can try to look into that. For people who never had any CSD classes, the program at TC takes 2.5 years and I think NYU takes 3 years. Not counting the undergrad level classes, TC requires more grad credits in order to graduate (around 60?) than NYU (48 I believe) so NYU might end up being cheaper even though it would take longer. Both schools offer abroad experiences but in different countries so you may have a preference. It does seem that NYU has more variety when it comes to research labs but personally I am not concerned because I have no interest in going into research. I don't like the way that NYU is doing prerequisites. First of all, they are just launching the whole online program so there is no guarantee things will work smoothly. I can pay way less money to do prerequisites elsewhere online that has already established a good system. I have already taken some prerequisites elsewhere, and looking at the requirements of the NYU program I would have to retake some classes because the requirements are 2-3 classes built into one. I don't think that you could really go wrong with either program, but just need to figure out which program fits your goals more. Good luck with your decision and maybe we can be future classmates!
  4. If you have to go into a ton of debt to go to MGH, I would probably just go to Hunter. If money is not a huge issue, then you really need to look at the fit of the program. Hunter does have placements in medical settings so I wouldn't worry about that aspect. At my interview, one girl worked at acute care and the other one in another medical setting that is not a hospital. I also remember them saying that people do get into the VA for externship sometimes although it is very competitive.
  5. Thank you! I asked the current grad students about it at the interview, and they don't know much about it because they didn't take it in the summer. Apparently they took it online and the program is restructuring it and moving it to the summer (they don't know if it will be online for new students). I think typically Hunter summer classes start in June, but I didn't get any word from the actual program. In fact, my portal hasn't even changed status yet even though I was informed of my acceptance on Wednesday.
  6. I am in the same boat. I have not even been seriously considering any of the expensive schools I applied to, because I was so focused on minimizing cost of tuition. My parents are willing to pay for my education at TC even though the price is insanely high, but I am having a hard time justifying it. It really offers what I want which is the multiculturalism, but it's so far and so expensive. I can't just make my parents pay 100k for me to get a job that pays 60k starting salary. With respect to your decision, I think you should go with program A! TC offers an online bilingual certificate program now so wherever you are, you can get the education later on.
  7. I was fortunate enough to be accepted into programs that I liked more later on, so I will be declining. Wishing you and your friends luck!
  8. Are you talking about Disorders of Articulation and Phonology or something else like development? If that is what you are looking for, it is offered online at USU every semester I believe. You can try to check out schools that have a undergraduate department in speech in your area. I know a lot of people took their post-bacc at Lehman and Queens and it's a pretty basic course so they should have it.
  9. @pbandj Just curious because you are from the west coast, are you leaning towards going to TC?
  10. @ElKel87 In the past Brooklyn has asked people to interview in April, so I wouldn't give up completely. But I would mentally prepare yourself for your current top choice! There's still a month until the deadline for me to convince myself I want to go to NYU I guess...
  11. I interviewed with Brooklyn back in February so I'm pretty upset that I'm not hearing anything lol. I don't care what the decision is I just want to get it over with. Literally checking my email every 10 minutes right now, and it's so bad for my nerves. It seems that they typically take a long time to send out rejections though, which is honestly quite crappy for us. As for Hunter, I have an interview coming up so I'm not obsessing over my portal just yet... but it is gonna take so long to get decisions.
  12. Somebody got an acceptance email from Brooklyn college today, and I have nothing in my mail box ? ? ?
  13. I am going to do casual because I don't see open house as very formal events. It's just to get us to know the schools better, and I know that students dress pretty casually when they go to class (not clinic) so I don't think it would be a problem.
  14. All we know for sure is that they will be released mid to late March. My guess is next week based on stalking old results and their academic calendar.
  15. Yeah I agree. I know that Hunter rescheduled their interview to next week because of the blizzard, which means I have to wait longer for my decision. If everything will come all at once next week that would be fabulous!
  16. I stalked the results page for a few years back, and every year TC has released decisions before or during spring break. They are on spring break right now so it has been driving me insane that we are not hearing anything! According to their academic calendar offices will be closed tomorrow so I doubt we will be hearing anything until next week. Personal rant: wherever I decide to go basically hinges on whether or not I get accepted to TC so it is extra frustrating to not know where I stand. Whatever the decision is, I just want to know so I can move on! Ugh.
  17. I honestly don't remember if I ever typed in my social for CSDCAS, but if they have my FAFSA I don't understand why they wouldn't have my social. I am feeling too lazy to call since I already have my finaid package haha.
  18. @CaliK8 I am the exact opposite! After 4 years of walking around with tourists and random shoppers I would love love love a campus! It is a great place to be and I am sure you would love it. Unfortunately, I was a commuter so I am completely clueless about how to get housing. Everything I talked about is from the experiences of my friends. @languagegirl I got the email too! It's weird because I already received my financial aid package so I am not sure if I still need to call... I went to NYU for undergrad so they already have my social security number technically. Did you get your finaid package yet?
  19. Yes. Some schools have a deadline and some don't, but since you are already accepted to one school it is imperative you do your FAFSA so that school can process it. I am sure that it will work out in the end, just call their finaid office to straighten things out!
  20. Not sure about your first question but omg do your FAFSA TODAY! ! ! The schools will not be able to prepare a financial aid package for you until you get it done.
  21. @CaliK8 I am glad I did my undergrad there! The school provided me with a lot of unique opportunities that I feel like I might not be able to get elsewhere. I actually got to take a graduate level class that happens to be an elective for the speech program. It was underwhelming but it wasn't from the communicative disorders department so... The staff are very helpful should you have any problem or concern; you are paying a lot of money to be there! Some professors are good and some are bad which is the norm for every school. The buildings are really nice and a majority of them surround the Washington Square Park, but there is absolutely no "campus" because they are still scattered. I don't think it would be a problem because we would only be in the department most of the time, but you need to think about the housing situation. Not sure how grad housing works, but the dorms right by the park are mostly reserved for freshman so upperclassmen lived further away and would have to speedwalk to class in 15 minutes. If you tried to rent a studio by yourself it would cost 2k for a tiny tiny studio because that area is one of the most expensive land. I loved the neighborhood though because there's so much to do and eat, and if you wanted to shop SOHO is 10 minutes away. Oh and the students are very nice, and there is a huge variety of people that you can be sure to find your niche if you go to student clubs or something.
  22. TC's results are traditionally out around this time though so maybe you could wait just a few more days in case you get accepted to TC! I will be going to the open house so let's see what I can find out! And I went to NYU for undergrad (not for speech though) so if you have any general questions about the school I can try to answer them.
  23. I totally agree with what the above posters said except that I would formally ask in September. School has already started then so it will be easier to track down these professors to give them your material, and I waited until all the online application portals opened so that I can email them the recommendation link as soon as they say yes.
  24. Not sure about the schools you applied to, but the majority of my schools have a 2/1 deadline, so taking two months to review 500+ application seems reasonable to me (especially if they also conduct interviews). With that said, I am frustrated by all the waiting and just wish I can get all my decisions so I can decide too!
