  1. Literally no one was saying that there was anything wrong with her wanting to charge for her talks.
  2. I go to school 900 miles from my parents' house. I drive. It's roughly 12 hours. It's exhausting and obnoxious, but so much cheaper than flying. And i'm with them thanksgiving-new years with my school on the quarter system, so having my car is important.
  3. I'm fairly confident I'm a good fit for my top program...but my gre writing is a little low. I'll need to retake it.
  4. Can you get good beef in Providence? For some reason I'm terrified it'll be nothing but fish lol. Ok - now THAT'S cool.
  5. Awesome! Do you have any idea how many religion students they usually accept a year? What's providence like?
  6. Anybody else here applying to Brown? I'd love to meet other hopefuls! I'm applying to the RCT program. What about you?
  7. Anyone applying to Brown's RCT?
  8. I'm a current MA at DU. If you come visit, lemme know!
  9. That's a very helpful thought. Thank you. I am as prepared as I can possibly be. I've had my CV done for months, and my SOPs read/edited by current PhD students and my faculty recommenders . I genuinely feel like Brown's RCT PhD is an incredible fit for what I want to do, and I really hit it off with the faculty member I spoke with on the phone... which makes me want the program even more, and I'm just worried I've set my sights too high. Ivy seems unattainable. The other programs I've applied to I can make fit, but not as neatly, and I'm not nearly as excited for. My undergrad institution accepted people at a 56% acceptance rate lol. Which I didn't know til I looked it up. My school had prestige in theology, but I've shifted gears to religious studies and no one will care about them. As a matter of fact, where I did my BA may be a bit of a deterrent. I'm doing my MA now, at a school with a 76% acceptance rate, but a much better known religion department... I just really don't want to wait another year.
  10. I'm super late to this party, but I've got a few suggestions. 1) Look up the CV of the head of the programs you're applying to and see what they have done. That should give you a fair idea of what is expected. 2) Definitely have a publications section if any of those papers have been published 3) Consider a "scholarship in progress" section for papers you are planning to submit to conferences or competitions or for publication. I definitely wouldn't list class papers that haven't been published on your cv.
  11. So... I had a really encouraging phone call with my top choice school... and now I'm slightly freaked that I'm gonna be overly optimistic when I hear back from them and wind up crushed.
  12. I did a bad thing. I looked up the acceptance rates of the universities I'm applying to for PhD. My best shot is a little over half. 56%. Next best shot is 1 in 4... the numbers only decline from there. Any program with decent funding is insanely competitive these days. Is it even actually possible to be good enough? My top choice program has a 9% acceptance rate. Even with stellar grades and scores and LORs... how can anyone be better than 91% of any given applicant pool?
  13. I'm Christmas prepping. And writing papers for competitions. And playing a lot of Mario Kart.
  14. I'm torn...all my letters are in. I haven't picked/perfected my writing sample yet though... do I let it be marked late and have a better writing sample, or turn it in on time with a writing sample that may not be as carefully selected/edited.
  15. For what it's worth... I'm a copy editor and a grad student working on her own thesis and I can tell you - our work is often over-inflated in our own minds. I highly doubt any copy editor is likely to even have the inclination to steal your work. Even if they did, to do so would be to risk their credibility and income. If this person is recommended by your university you can probably trust them.
  16. Just trying to survive... and convince a university to give me money to study religion.

  17. I'm stoked to finish the majority of my apps today! I've got 5 due, and having those behind me is gonna feel great.
  18. I try to talk to my mom about things I'm excited about studying/writing on and her eyes glaze over. I be polite when she talks about her job, and when I talk about school she doesn't want to listen. at one point she straight up told me what I was excited about sounded boring. A lot of my recommenders have lost/needed resent the requests for their letters. I had an application listed as due Jan 2. and got an email it's due today, the 15th. I have 5 apps due and don't feel great about any of my writing samples. There's just a lot going on...
  19. So Yale's Religion PhD I thought was due Jan. 2... and I just got an email Saying it's due today (the 15th) !!! AHHHHH.
  20. None of mine have been late...but a few have cut it very close. We're talking hours. Most places won't actually *look* at December apps til after the New Year, and there tends to be a little grace for late LORs.
  21. WOAH. Congrats!!!
  22. I had a really positive phone call with my top program.
  23. Hey girl hey. I'm 24, applying for PhDs, and most of my friends got married at 20-22. My friends are all in the baby having stage right now, so I feel you. This sucks. And, unfortunately, a lot of men are still intimidated by smart/driven women. I just try to shrug it off because I wouldn't be happy with a man so easily frightened anyway, but sometimes it's easier said than done. All I can offer is a cyber hug, some solidarity, and some hope. We don't need 1000 men falling over us. Just one, if he's the right one. And I mean, come on. Out of the billions of men on this planet, there has to be at least one with whom we can have reciprocal attraction, some shared values, and a good time. I'm confident that with patience, we'll both get what we want academically AND romantically.
  24. I've applied to 10 different programs because I'm scared I won't get in anywhere. I'm applying to PhDs in Religion programs: theory, ethics, society concentrations. I'm applying to Harvard, Brown, Yale, Boston University, Georgetown, UNC Chapel Hill, UVA, Vanderbilt, Emory, and Florida State.
