Four prereqs in summer...doable?
SpeechGal1234 replied to Heyone's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I took 4 online courses the summer before my program: Phonetics & Intro to Communication at ENMU and Audiology & Anatomy at MGH. In addition, I worked as a tutor 10 hours a week. It was very doable. Some weeks were a little challenging and things piled up, but it wasn't hard. I worked on average 6 hours a day, 4 days a week on school work (maybe less). Now having been in grad school for 2 semesters, that summer was a piece of cake haha. I had plenty of free time on the weekends and evenings to relax, and grad school is much more time consuming! You can definitely do it! -

I don't have an answer for you... but if you have Facebook, there is a great facebook group called Speech Pathologists at Large. Many people post questions like this on there! They might be able to help if no one can answer you on here- 4 replies

You should absolutely trust a current students opinion over ratemyprofessor. It looks like Dr. Weems is not teaching the class this summer. I also had the option of Bougie when I took the class. @KEIM I did take A&P at MGH. I couldn't find a student that took it at ENMU to give my any info about the class, so I went with the reviews on ratemyprofessor and did not take it at ENMU. Maybe someone else here can give you information about the ENMU summer class with Bougie or Barrow? I would have taken it at ENMU if someone had said it was a good class!

I took it at MGH after seeing horrible things about the professor at East New Mexico (on ratemyprofessor), despite a huge cost difference. The good grade was worth the cost. If Sofia Vallila Rohter is teaching it at MGH, I would HIGHLY recommend. It is tough but she is such an good professor and I got an A fairly easily. If you study the powerpoints and do the work, you can get an A.

MGH 2018 Applications

The program will not make a facebook group, so one of you just needs to go ahead and make one!! If there isn't one yet, you should make one! It's the perfect place to connect and ask questions, and you can always make someone else the admin in the future- 25 replies

Boston Schools – Car?
SpeechGal1234 replied to wherethelightis's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@mlr I would guess that most of the students in my cohort don't have a car. Most students do not drive to campus because parking can be difficult. They DO specifically tell incoming students that for your second year external placements, you may be required to have a car. I would not recommend bringing a car first year unless you have a plan for parking near your home, but be prepared to have one second year if necessary. The majority of students live in Charlestown (close to school), the North End, or Cambridge/Summerville. My recommendation is to look for places that have access to North Station, and be prepared for a commute. Most people have a 30-45 minutes commute so that is pretty normal! -

Boston Schools – Car?
SpeechGal1234 replied to wherethelightis's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I live in Boston and I have a car. You definitely don't need one and I only use it once a week to grocery shop or go to a specific place. Honestly, I avoid driving at all costs because the drivers are crazy, the traffic is awful, and parking is impossible. If you don't have a car, make sure to live somewhere close to the T. I would recommend living near the T rather than buses. It depends on the bus line, but some buses only come every hour so they aren't helpful in getting you places for a certain time. Also, be aware that some grad schools will tell you that you may be required to have a car for some external placements! -
Within 2-3 weeks! Have you seen this website yet? It will tell you when people heard back last year! https://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=speech&t=a&pp=250

SLP Graduate Assistantship
SpeechGal1234 replied to azure's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I work for 10 hours per week. It isn't too bad BUT it does take away time that you could be studying. I think the level of stress will really depend on what job you are taking. If you are working at a library or a front desk, you can spend a lot of that time studying. On the other hand, working on research will not allow for any time to study. Also, assistantships are going to vary, even within one program. I have a friend who does research and she has the option to work less during the weeks that are tough (like during midterms or when everything is just piling on), while other research professors may not be as flexible. I would recommend applying, see what you get and then decide. See if you have the option to turn it down. I know people in my program that were involved in research and couldn't handle it and they were able to quit! -
I did this interview last year! They are really fast (10 minutes) and the people who interview you are really nice! I did the interview online because I wasn't going to fly to Boston for a 10 minute interview, and did not regret that. They are very understanding if you cannot travel. As for your question, these interviews were so hard to prepare for. If I remember correctly, Emerson asked REALLY weird questions that I was not expecting, so there is absolutely no way to prepare. My only advice is: This one may be obvious, but dress professionally, even if it is on Skype Know why you want to be an SLP (make an elevator speech) Be prepared to talk about something you like that has nothing to do with being an SLP. What do you do outside of your resume and cover letter? Be prepared for a question that is really out of the blue. You can't prepare for this, but don't let it throw you off. Come with a specific question for them so you look interested in the program! I always asked the interviewers what they saw as the greatest strength of their program so they have a chance to brag and I can get a sense of the programs focus! Good luck!!

Yes, this is a real school. I tried to apply but I didn't have my prereq's completed so they wouldn't even look at my application. I wanted to go there because they are doing some amazing work with AAC. Their program is VERY competitive. It is definitely worth emailing them and asking them more information!

I am also in my first year of grad school. When I applied, I only had 1 out of 5 CSD prereqs finished and 3 out of 4 ASHA prereqs completed. Some school required that I complete all of the prereqs before I applying, so I simply didn't apply to those school. Plenty of schools do NOT require that all prereqs are completed before applying. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

ENMU SLP Leveling Pre-req Courses
SpeechGal1234 replied to SpeechGal1234's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I am not sure, but you can call ENMU and they will answer. Suzanne Swift at 575-562-2724 is often available and is quick to answer any questions you have. I assume they would accept A&P at MGH as a pre-req, but I can't be sure! -
Plans to Pay off Loan Debt
SpeechGal1234 replied to SpeechLaedy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Look into other jobs! I joined care.com and got a job babysitting. In big cities, I know they pay $15-20 an hour babysitting or more, depending on location. I know in NY it has to be big pay, too!!! Also, I don't know your background, but you can make even more if you are a teacher or come from a school based job and find a tutoring job. Much better pay and fun job -
This was a big question for me, too. It is so expensive! I qualified for Medicaid.

I would highly recommend the ETS materials! Since the practice tests are written by the people who actually write the GRE, they are very accurate.

ENMU SLP Leveling Pre-req Courses
SpeechGal1234 replied to SpeechGal1234's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yes, I am taking 2 at MGH AND 2 at ENMU, but I am not working. It is hard but I probably do school work on average 35-40 hours a week, sometimes less. Honestly, I can't recommend MGH's anatomy class enough. I was so scared of that class, but it has probably been the easiest out of the four classes I am taking! That has a lot to do with the professor. The class average of Test 1 was a 94% or 96% so clearly most people are not struggling. That being said, not all MGH classes are like that, I just think this specific professor is easy. -
ENMU SLP Leveling Pre-req Courses
SpeechGal1234 replied to SpeechGal1234's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
MGH has been great. I am taking 2 courses at MGH and 2 at ENMU right now. Swift is very quick to respond to emails and I think the structure of the class is good. Her tests and quizzes are hard because she simply doesn't supply the information necessary to get 100%, which is ok but frustrating. She even states in her lectures that she doesn't want you to get an A ha! It definitely drives me crazy that you don't know what you got wrong. It seems to me that there has been a big issue with cheating in the past which is why they won't correct you. But how can I learn if I don't know what I got wrong? Then as I continue through the course, I am probably getting the same questions wrong! I wish there was more emphasis on true learning at ENMU. MGH is definitely more interactive and more in depth. You are required to do discussion posts weekly to interact and learn from your peers and professors, which is time consuming but so critical to learning. The information seems to go much more in depth, which may be because it is a longer course. The professors hold current lectures (some of Swift's lectures are from 2012, I think) and interact with the class during these lectures. Lectures are optional to attend and you can see the recording later. Also, they let you take quizzes more than once because the purpose is LEARNING. However, the 2-3 exams you can only take once. It is definitely geared toward learning and understanding information. I have definitely learned that you get what you pay for! All that being said, I am a future grad student and I need to save money, so I absolutely do NOT regret taking ENMU classes. Despite the downfalls, ENMU is "easier" in many ways, you can go at your own pace, and they are less intense courses. -
ENMU SLP Leveling Pre-req Courses
SpeechGal1234 replied to SpeechGal1234's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I specifically spent double the money to take A&P at MGH rather than ENMU because I saw Bougie's reviews on rate my professor. I have had a great experience with Stephanie Lebsack in Phonology, and an ok experience with Suzanne Swift for Intro to Commun Disorders. Just FYI -

Online course for communication disorders
SpeechGal1234 replied to speechie95's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I was going to take all 3 of my pre-req's at ENMU, but one of the courses I have to take is Anatomy & Physiology of the Speech, Language & Hearing Mechanism with Bougie. I heard this is a VERY tough course at ENMU, especially if you are taking 2 other courses at the accelerated pace. Does anyone agree or disagree with this? -
