  1. Most places know transcripts and GRE verification are out of your hands and are okay with them arriving a few weeks later. You’ve already entered grades and scores into the application. Admissions really just want to verify the scores are legitimate and most likely they will not review that until after the new year.
  2. Are you referring to OHSU-Portland State Public Health? I just received an acceptance to the MPH program there on Monday (April 23).
  3. Looks like I may have been rejected by NYU (SBS), per an email from a Professor I know there: "We hosted PhD interviews last week. I am not sure if the comittee will be going back to the pool of applicants. Please let me know how things go however. I think you have a lot of potential!" That's most likely a rejection right?
  4. I had spoke to my POI and the Dean frequently before and he assured me they would have full funding for my research interest. That's the only reason I applied.
  5. Just received this email from Rutgers today: Thank you for your recent inquiry to RUTGERS SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH in Piscataway, New Jersey, USA. Please note that that the doctoral review committee was overwhelmed by the large volume of new applications that they received for the fall term, that the committee is still in the process of reading and evaluating all of the many application packages! As of now, the committee hopes to be able to notify the doctoral applicants regarding their Fall Admissions Decision within the next six or seven weeks. SIX OR SEVEN WEEKS?!?!? ?
  6. Thank you. No I did not get an invite for interview, which has me concerned. However, the phone number on my application is off because I'm overseas so if they tried to call me, I would not have received it. However, I have not received any emails so I'm not sure what to think. I REALLY hit the off with the Professor I Skype with and she said I would be a perfect fit. NYU and one other school are my top choices... I hope to hear something soon, but as of yet I haven't even seen people post rejections. I'm guessing all of the top schools are really very far behind, as I've only seen people post rejections (or interviews) from the schools/departments I applied to... no one has posted acceptance notifications. I'm holding on to that.
  7. Yes I am, Global Public Health, Social-Behavioral concentration. I just contacted my POI over the weekend but have yet to hear anything back. I'll post as soon as I know something... we had a 2 hour Skype chat a few months ago so I have a feeling she will tell me the inside scoop. What did you apply for?
  8. Is there a portal for Columbia SBS? NYU SBS? Harvard PHS? I've looked over the emails I received when I applied and don't see any portal information, so I was just curious if there is a URL I could go to. Also, would Sophas update if you are accepted/rejected/waitlisted?? thanks!
  9. Thanks for the feedback... I guess I'll just remain hoping for the best. I did talk to all my POIs before hand, with informal Skype chats, in some cases over 2 hours long. It was a really good fit, and my mentor who wrote a LOR is well-known by all of them. Even a rejection now would be nice because it would put be at ease that at least someone read my applications! I suppose one more week isn't too long to wait.
  10. Hey guys... I'm not sure what to think. I am seeing postings for interviews and accepts at programs I applied for but to date, I've heard nothing. I'm a bit freaked out. I know I'm an outstanding candidate (great SOP, LORs, past awards and publications) however my GRE was just average. I sent applications to Harvard PHS, Columbia, NYU and Rutgers... all for PhD in the Social and Behavioral concentration. I've been checking my email religiously and nothing. I can't believe I didn't even get an interview? The only issue might be that because I'm currently in Kenya doing research as a Fulbright scholar, my phone listed on my application is not active. Could that be the issue or should I just give up hope that I've been accepted anywhere? Thanks in advance for the feedback.
  11. I'm currently on a Fulbright in Kenya, but I'm research not ETA. However, I remember last year all the ETAs got their assignments at the PDO in July, so that would certainly be after you have accepted.
  12. Hey Matt, good luck! I'm currently in Kenya on a student research grant and I'm really enjoying it here! My trip started off a little bumpy due to the political unrest, but I was able to adjust my project. My advice is be flexible... Kenya can through you some curve balls.
  13. Hey there, I am applying to a sociology/public health program. Want to swap SoP? Please send me a PM. Thank you!
  14. I'm planning to apply but I'm not sure if my discipline Social and Behavioral Sciences is eligible. It is a interdisciplinary field of sociology and public health with a heavy emphasis on research. Thoughts?
  15. Well my scores came back and I did in fact do quote poorly. I basically did it without studying (and a little hung over.. long story). At least now I have a better idea of what to expect! I do plan to retake them after I'm settled in Kenya for my Fulbright research deployment. Test day: August 29, 2017 Verbal: 159 Percentile: 83 Quant: 150 Percentile: 38 Writing: 3.5 Percentile: 42 Although I feel like I'm a strong candidate for programs otherwise, I'm worried these scores might affect my chances to get into top programs. My short applicant bio is on this post. Any feedback on that?

  17. How do I triage this? i was studying well a couple months ago, doing okay on the verbal (roughly 155) but my math needed work (about 145). However life happened and I haven't been able to study since. To top it off, I can tell I'm getting sick. Should I pull out of my test date (Aug 29) and reschedule for a couple months? Only caveat to that is that I'll be in Kenya from October 15 onward. But personally, I'm more comfortable at the idea of taking a paper test. What would you do?
  18. Great feedback @fuzzylogician, thank you for offering your perspective! Im leaning towards asking my advisor in Uganda, particularly as I'll likely see her in person next month when I'm there.
  19. I'm applying for doctoral programs in Public Health. I have always been good at nurturing relationships with professors and have several options for letters of recommendation, but I need feedback on who might make the most compelling recommendation. About me: older student but recently graduated with a BS in Public Health and Human Rights from a HUGE public school with a 4.0 GPA. I've been conducting research in East Africa through several prestigious scholarships. In a few months, I'll be starting a Fulbright in Kenya to continue the same research on refugee health. I'm applying to top-tier schools for my PhD, but my background is very humble/non-academic (and I certainly have huge case of imposter syndrome). My options for recommenders are: - my academic mentor whom has worked with me for several years and I've taken a graduate course from him as well completed independent research for publication under his mentorship. He is well regarded in the field and publishes work continuously. (Obviously, he will be a recommender for sure) Choosing between the others is a little more of a challenge. my community health professor from community college (who is now the chair of the department). She has always written amazing letters for past scholarships, and she knows me and my work well. However, the fact that she is at a community college may be a negative? the lead instructor from a class last semester directly related to my field of study. Although he isn't a Professor, he was a guest instructor from a HUGE international humanitarian organization (think one of the top 3), where he is the director of the health project. I got an A+ in the class however I feel he may not "know" me like other people would.. and we are both gay, if that helps. His name is recognizable to people working in public health. my advisor during my study-abroad in Uganda. She is very familiar with my work and current research. It might be nice to have a perspective like hers on my application, however she did flake on me last time I asked her. If I asked her again, I'd be sure to get it early enough that shouldn't be a problem. I need three recommendations. I feel like overall I'm a good candidate so I hope I have an application that is impressive enough I can go anywhere I want. I would appreciate any feedback on who I should ask for these letters (or any feedback in general if appropriate). Thank you!
  20. Maybe it is just my country or region (Kenya) but we were explicitly told we could not travel early. They said we could stay later than our grant but not before. I think it has something to do with the security etc.
  21. I remember seeing business casual as well. I'm probably going to wear cargo pants/collared shirt and shorts/polo combinations. I'm sort of lacking in the more "business" end of business casual. :-(
  22. I would start about 5 months before the application is due. Fill out the basics of the application, lay out the concept for your research proposal and get affiliation letters requested. Start to work on your personal statement and set it aside for a few weeks to edit it down because it is REALLY difficult to compress everything down to one page. Plan to have everything done by beginning of September and get feedback from others. That way you can easily make the deadline without stress.
  23. I'm in an interdisciplinary undergraduate program at CUNY where you make your own major called "CUNY Baccalaureate for Unique & Interdisciplinary Studies" or CUNYBA. My major is Health and Human Rights. As a part of my major, ive been taking graduate courses at CUNY School of Public Health
  24. Hey guys, I'm new here but I got a Fulbright research to Kenya. Anyone else going to Sub-Saharan Africa?
