  1. Most applications offer fee waivers, they usually ask a financial aid report from undergrad on your side or proof that you're financially incapable of paying the waiver. But yeah sometimes that might not be an option For students of color look up the Big Ten Academic Alliance btw. That's lots of fee waivers right there.
  2. What's your field of study? I'm also applying to UChicago and will more likely be rejected, especially if some people are already receiving calls
  3. I was under the impression that people who get very early interviews and acceptances are applying for STEM programs, so I guess nothing to worry about for now for me. I'm pretty uncertain about most schools I am applying to for a French Ph.D., except for Rutgers because the chair of the program sent me an e-mail to tell me she read my statement of purpose and found it interesting But yeah, otherwise I'll be very nervous until late January to March when most rejections and acceptances will come. I applied to 7 programs (in my signature), and 5 of them kindly waived the application fee so that's why I could apply. My GPA is good and my background is good enough, but my quantitative GRE score was simply disastrous and the verbal one was at most acceptable. I also feel disadvantaged by a lack of published papers, but it's not that common in my field for undergraduates to publish, I suppose.
  4. My backup plan is not super crazy. I'll get a teaching license and teach high school And try again in a couple years.
  5. I haven't noticed actually. Biologists have a nice subforum to talk about their apps, meanwhile only 3 members are applying to French this cycle. It all depends.
  6. I'm so relieved those awful changes were done with. Now while I may be able to attend graduate school, the economy will probably be in shambles when I graduate, so...
  7. I just checked the admission decision sections back to 2008. I know I'll get rejected to some schools (Chicago is such a long shot! Stanford I don't care much for, applied just because it was free to do so but I'll also get rejected there) but I just wish I knew already so I could plan out my life. The uncertainty is killing me. Thank g*d for the holidays, that shall distract me a little. But I just can't wait lmao
  8. She sent the remaining letters today! So relieved and thankful!
  9. Thanks everybody. She managed to send one of the recommendations just an hour before 1 am last night (and for that I feel guilty, no one should be working at that time!), and will soon send the other 2. I'm glad to hear most graduate schools aren't that strict in that regard.
  10. Thanks for the heads-up, I will certainly keep this in mind as I accept offers of admission next year. It's odd that people mention that happening in undergraduate, because it certainly wasn't the case at all at my college. The first day, when the syllabus is read, would be taught in English, but onwards it would be just French, and that helped my French A LOT. A professor who is not willing to teach language and literature in the language (beyond the introductory courses) would not sit well with me.
  11. Good luck with your applications! Those seem like great choices for your research area. Seems like we both applied at Stanford (though that's actually a wildcard for me. I doubt I'll get in but I was kindly offered a fee waiver by their department). In undergraduate I dealt mostly with Francophone studies, I like Orientalism and history of the French colonial empire. I would love to focus on 20th century French Algeria the most. These next couple months or so will be exciting waiting for decisions.
  12. I'm planning on sending thank you cards with a written message and maybe a Starbucks gift card or chocolate. You can't almost ever go wrong with either one, professors love caffeine as much as students and I've met like two people in my life who don't like chocolate
  13. Hi guys, I'm freaking out because my last recommender, the dean of my college (who was also my academic advisor), probably will not submit my letters tonight which is the deadline for the University of North Carolina and Stanford. Luckily, for Chicago I have three recommenders already, but I suppose it will look bad if the fourth I put down on the app did not send the recommendation. I reminder her three times total and each time (including yesterday) she told me she'd do it (asked her back in late September), but I also understand she's very busy (running one of the best honors colleges in the state!) and has had family issues lately. I'm thankful she even accepted to recommend me, really. I'm worried however that those universities won't be as understanding of the circumstances. The websites specifically say all materials must be received by that date to have financial aid consideration. I am planning to send e-mails tomorrow and hope for the best. For anyone who may read this in the future, keep in mind some people are just very busy in general and may be more difficult for them to send recommendations in a timely manner. I was wondering if in anybody's experience submitting a recommendation a few days after the deadline (perhaps one day, not sure if she'll just submit tomorrow) will affect me, or am I worrying over nothing? Thanks
  14. Hi guys! Also applying. Already applied to all colleges in my signature but one of my professors is taking a good deal of time to send a recommendation. Worrying--but she still has a couple weeks. Will definitely send her a reminder. Where are you guys applying and why?
  15. Okay so this thread clarified everything for me. All we can do is wait and hope the Senate's version is the one that will pass. I contacted my representatives and really need this to take longer than a week. The Forbes article takes a pragmatic approach that I'm not sure schools will take. Changing tuition waivers' names to scholarships is easy enough but don't scholarships require actual transferral of money? Someone educate me here, I think the author may be being a little too practical. Prayer circle even though I'm agnostic
  16. I was having second thoughts last night and just fearing I wasn't gonna get accepted anywhere. :/
  17. I don't think they offer waivers for sending additional score reports. May be a good idea to ask for a loan again Edit: Apparently you may be able to get promo vouchers but the discounts are not that big
  18. Thanks for that info @rising_star. I may apply then since the deadline is far enough for my recommenders to submit letters. The Soros one is too late for me, and probably way more competitive anyway. An issue is that I told a number of graduate schools that I was not seeking outside financial assistance, because at the time I wasn't. Could this be considered lying in an application? It wasn't intentional, I guess I could clarify to them in the case I obtain outside financial assistance?
  19. Speaking of budget, many graduate schools will waive the application fee if you were a Pell Grant recipient or from an underrepresented ethnic group. I planned to apply to 3 or 4 schools at most but decided to go for 8 due to finding out about these fee waivers.
  20. Interested in what people have to say about this. If I were a professor, I would not want to feel as if someone were e-mailing me just to increase their chances of getting in.
  21. Schools that, if you fit the requirements for the CIC/BTAA FreApp, will waive your fee. (Filled out form before Nov 1st for all).: UofMinnessota Rutgers Indiana U UofMichigan UofChicago requires you to start the app before determining if they will waive your app, but they did end up waiving it for me.
  22. Hello everyone, I noticed there was no thread for the Ford fellowship for 2018. Also: does anyone know if the fellowship covers the entirety of a graduate program? I couldn't find any info on this on the website. I was interested in the Daisy Soros fellowship but since it only covers 2 years I preferred not to apply because a school could limit my funding and I could need that funding later.
  23. well, seems like it depends on the school. Some schools will get back to you, others won't. (Penn State has been pretty bad at getting back to me).
  24. Well, I submitted my application IU Bloomington's French Ph.D. program. I take the GRE the 20th and my professors have been notified at this point to submit their recs. It sucks that I have nothing to do now except maybe email professors. For UMich and Penn State I am awaiting confirmation that I'm eligible for a fee waiver. I reaaaally hope I am because otherwise I will fill them out a little later. The other 2 I am applying to are UPitt and UNC. In order, my choices are: 1. Bloomington/Michigan 2. Pittsburgh 3. UNC/Penn All programs are a fit, but I'd prefer to live in a mid-sized city with lots of students and progressive people. Pitt could be exciting, though, and seems to be the one that matches my interests best. UNC is too close to home and Penn--I don't know about living in a small town where the college is the whole town. I am not even nervous about the GRE, it appears to be SAT 2.0. I study of course but I don't fret about it.
  25. Hello everyone, Does anyone have experience with the BTAA application fee waiver? Indiana University got back to me incredibly fast and I've finished my application since then (GRE and recs to come later). The two other schools I plan to use that waiver with, PennS and UMich, haven't gotten back to me.
