Fall 2018 Clinical Psych Interview Invites
kitcassidance replied to psych0's topic in Psychology Forum
I know Rhode Island interviews are 2/9, and they said they'd give "at least two weeks" notice. I wasn't able to get a confirmation from anyone at the school when I called either -- have my fingers crossed for the waitlist, but my guess is they've all been extended -
I'm out of "reactions" but I am so grateful you said this. Thank you.

Also this. Academia is elitism. Money to apply, money to take the tests, money to travel, money for accommodations, money to appropriately present yourself. I truly appreciate the schools that are willing to waive application fees and attempt to cover interview fees, but we have a long way to go before academia is truly accessible.

Oh my gosh!!!! 1000x this. Clearly, I have all math formulas hidden on the inside of this elastic rubber band. You caught me. ALSO, yes, please, take 1 minute and a half of my TIMED TEST to tell me my hair tie must be in my hair at all times.

How to use notes/cheat sheet at interview?
kitcassidance replied to pataka's topic in Interviews and Visits
I feel the same way! I’m loving this thread. Thanks for asking @pataka -
Update: Hairbrush!! Always a good plan to note if there is a 24 hour drug store within walking distance of your accommodations

Hi all! I've spent the last two years traveling monthly for work, and spent the first year forgetting at least one essential item. I created a super generic packing list. Most of these items are pretty obvious, but I know especially in high anxiety situations, I'm more likely to overlook things. Anyway, thought I would share the list I've been using for interviews in case someone else would find it useful! Electronics: - Laptop - Laptop Charger - Headphones - Cell phone charger Clothing: - Suit - Blouse - Back up interview outfit - X outfits for X days away - Pajamas (Especially if you're staying with grad students or sharing a room!) - Undergarments - Socks - Professional shoes Basics: - Toothbrush - Toothpaste - Floss - Deodorant - Makeup bag Travel Size Versions of: - Shampoo - Facewash - Moisturizer - Lotion In my purse: - Wallet - Passport - Driver's License - Emergency Cash - Travel Binder including Plane/Train Ticket Printed, Hotel information, Itinerary - Padfolio with Resume/CV, recent abstracts of POIs work (as well as notepad for list of questions to ask at interview, write notes about program, etc.) - Lint roller - Tide Pen - Nail File/Polish - Granola Bar The last step is remembering to grab my suitcase on the way to the airport!

Hi! One of my interviews also has a group interview portion. I'm not exactly sure how this works for grad school, but I've done group interviews in the past for other field-related positions. I've seen it go two ways: 1) There is limited time and space, so one interviewer asks the same questions of each applicant, and you answer the same questions in front of one another. 2) You're assigned to a group and given a "problem solving" vignette. This is largely to see how you work within a group, can you think critically, can you collaborate, are you able to show leadership skills without stepping on someone else's toes, etc. This could be something entirely different as well hah! But I'm planning on preparing for the group interview in the same way I'm prepping for one on one interviews. Know the program, know the research, and know my own application (major difference in prepping for the group interview may be practicing expressing these ideas in a shorter amount of time! I saw someone say prep your "self-story" and a piece of your research in 1 min, 2 min, 5 min, and 10 min timeframes) Good luck!

I was in a similar situation and tried to focus more on my letter writer's reputation and accomplishments rather than minor grammatical errors written in the 12th language she speaks. (May be worth noting part of my interest is in cross-cultural and transnational research though). My guess is it won't hurt you, so long as they're a reputable professor within your field.

Abstaining from alcohol on interview weekend?
kitcassidance replied to neuronfire94's topic in Psychology Forum
Soda water in a highball glass with a lime and a small straw is always a good alternative! -
Hi! This application season, I applied for both PsyD and PhD Clinical Psychology Programs. I have quite a bit of experience prepping for PhD interviews, particularly with a specific POI. Because I did not apply to a specific lab for the PsyD program, I'm feeling a bit at a loss for how to prepare for my interview. Rather than studying up on specific research, should I be looking at the program more broadly? Do I need in depth knowledge of each professor's research, etc? All advice is welcome!

Fall 2018 Clinical Psych Interview Invites
kitcassidance replied to psych0's topic in Psychology Forum
Has anyone heard from George Mason or know if all invites are out for Maryland - College Park? Am wondering about George Mason as well. I saw on the CUDCP calendar that the deadline is today, but haven't seen any posted results. Fingers crossed! -
I just started doing The Joy of Painting with Bob Ross and joined a gym. I just read this as a combination Bob Ross painting/yoga class. I think I know what my Plan B is if I don't get into any of my programs!

What to do when request for LOR isn't acknowledged
kitcassidance replied to Nico Corr's topic in Letters of Recommendation
When are your applications due? If you have a strong relationship with the second professor, would reach out again. I e-mailed all of my professors back in June (Dec 1 Deadline) and two responded quickly, and the third did not respond. I reached out again to the third professor mid-July, and he responded quickly to the second e-mail. I have a close relationship with a fourth professor (but research wasn't as closely related as the others) and asked if he would be able to write a letter if need be - although I didn't end up needing his letter, it was SO helpful in calming my anxiety when my third professor submitted hours before the final deadline. I think asking a "backup" professor is a good plan, especially in the event that you've already followed up, or if this professor has not written you a letter in the past/indicated they would write you a letter. Good luck! -
Trans/Non-Binary Applicants
kitcassidance replied to butwhyisallthecoffeegone's topic in Interviews and Visits
First, congratulations on your interview offers! While I definitely understand if you're not comfortable reaching out to the department now, I think it's completely appropriate to correct them. If they are put off by your gentle correction, it's probably not somewhere you'd want to end up. I took note of applications that allowed me to expand on my gender identity, and felt like those were probably institutions with a better culture fit! (Sorry I'm not more help!)- 7 replies

Got it! I definitely applied to safe(r) schools and entirely avoided programs with clear cut-offs and averages far above my actual scores. I actually started first with research fit, and narrowed down schools based on accepted applicant data - but with so much anxiety and competition, nothing feels safe haha! I guess when I was reading "safety" schools, I was thinking "guaranteed" rather than "safer" Thanks for your insight!

I've heard a lot of talk of people applying to "reach" and "safe schools." Maybe it's my GRE scores, but I feel like there are no "Safe Schools" in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. programs. How are you all determining this? (This is my first time applying, and I'm trying to be more prepared in the event that I'm repeating the application cycle next year)

I'm in a different field, but I've heard mixed things about GRE scores. Some programs say they look holistically at your application, while others have clearly posted minimum scores (where they essentially say if you don't have this GRE score, don't bother applying). Are you able to look at data for previous accepted applicants?
