Yes, I just attended a CEU with a fluency specialist and ~35 percent of her utterances was disfluent. We are not robots! I have disfluent moments or mispronounced words as well. When it happens I self-correct and tell my client ( I am an SLPA) or parent that we all make mistakes and the purpose of speech isn't to be"perfect". Parents love this and they tell me the words they cannot say, lol. It allows me to connect with parents more and limit the hierarchy.

Ugh I feel that lol. I emailed them kind of asking indirectly, but they said that we should get our financial aid package by April 15. Other than that, I don’t know anything else. I feel like at this point all we can do is just wait for it?
They also told me that departmental scholarships were sent out with the initial offers, but they may offer them to others if they get turned down.

I am in the same boat and got the max federal loan of $20k but that still doesn't cover the full tuition. I am pretty sure you can apply for a GRAD plus loan through FAFSA to get the rest of your tuition covered. I think the interest may be a little bit higher but I'm sure it's less than most private loan interest rates may be. I called FAFSA about it and say said application for the Grad plus loan should be available by the end of this month on the FAFSA website.

I'm also worried about this! I don't have too much debt from undergrad but will be taking out the max federal loan (~20K) and will still owe around 10K + living expenses. I haven't talked with the financial aid office yet, but I'm assuming the only way to have the rest of this covered is through private loans, right? Leaving out options of scholarships, assistantships, and work study (want to plan for worst case). Does anyone have any experience obtaining private loans? Are they fairly easy to get?

If anyone is interested in loan forgiveness options after graduation, do plenty of research and make sure youVOTE. The current administration is looking to gut some of these programs to get more money for a racist wall.

Not saying I agree or disagree with your comments. But how can you make this statement if you did not go to a top-rated school? Also what is wrong with focusing on research? The material you learned in class came from research. All practice is informed by research. Without top-ranked research schools leading the field in EBP, other clinical programs with professors like yours would become clueless. Remember, you are going to graduate school, earning an academic degree. Not professional school and professional degree.

    Hi all,
I was accepted into the MedSLP program, and I am seriously considering going because it is my top choice.
My only concern in funding. Because MedSLP is a fee-based program, I am having a hard time figuring where financial aid comes from. We are not eligible for university funding or the WICHE program, which means MedSLP students have to rely on federal loans and department scholarships, right? And living in Seattle is already quite expensive, on top of the fixed tuition and lack of funding options.
Does anyone have any information on MedSLP funding? I have an opportunity to get a Graduate Assistantship at Portland State, and I'm tempted to just ignore UW in favor of the better funding options there. I'd really rather go to UW, though. Help! ?

I will be at the in-person session on April 5th! It would be great to see another MedSLP person there!
I got lucky with the expenses because my Aunt lives in Tacoma, and she offered to let me stay with her and drive me into Seattle.
Hopefully you can work out the finances to come up, but if not their virtual meetings are actually really great. I did a virtual admissions webinar during the application process, and the women running it were very friendly ,and there were several opportunities to interact with the faculty and other "attendees" through Zoom. Even though it would be fun to visit the campus in person, the online option is not a bad alternative, especially if it lets you save money to actually accept your offer.

Is anyone attending the Admitted Students Day on April 5 (or other dates)? I'm most likely going to accept my MedSLP offer but I'd really like to visit UW and Seattle before doing so as I've never been and it will be a really big move for me across the country. However, the deposit is due shortly after that and I'm afraid that I'll be really stretched thin for money after buying my flight, airbnb, etc. for the visit - I can make it work, but it will just be really financially stressful to do, haha. Does anyone have any advice? Should I just plan on attending the online session instead?

On another note, if you all end up visiting and talk to any current students about housing options, please share! This is one of my concerns (expense, availability, and distance from campus). My friend at GW Law visited DC multiple times before school started but all of the places she had looked at became unavailable on short-notice, and it seems like that's just how it goes. She luckily found a place a couple of weeks before she moved (expensive but close to campus). I'm not from a big city, so housing being so unpredictable isn't what I'm used to at all - but worrying about running out of options may be silly?

As someone who is completing their undergrad in the DC area, I have heard some mixed things about GW's program. This is what I've heard from GW itself and from master's students in the area.
Pros: their eight "tracks (sub-clinics) give you exposure to all types of disorders before you do your externships, the professors are friendly
Cons: they doubled their cohort size a year or two ago and people are falling through the cracks because they didn't really plan for class sizes and external placements.
I'm not going to lie, D.C. is an expensive city to live in too. While GW could be more expensive for a private school, the cost of living mixed with private school costs are still something to consider when tied to the mixed reviews.

If you're like me and have been spending a slightly unhealthy amount of time on this website in the last few weeks (whoops), or you're needing some cheering up, check out this thread for lots of laughs. It's the good, the bad, and the ugly, and not only does it make some rejections hurt less, but some of the posts are so funny that it's pretty much the most wholesome thing on this site.
Don't forget self-care during this wild time. Enjoy!! ?

I don't think that sounds silly at all - cities are a bit nuts in general! And in my opinion, DC craziness ranks right up there with NYC, LA, & San Fran. It's good to start looking now just to get an idea of what's around. I know there are facebook groups regarding housing where people post searching for roommate/apartment stuff. Would be worth checking into!

Aha! I just went back into my email and sorted it out. I did get the admitted students email, I don't know how I missed it. Thank you for posting the screenshot! As for the open house, I emailed them asking if it was possible to visit in early March. Dr. Hancock suggested attending the March 29th open house (see below):
"https://speechhearing.columbian.gwu.edu/ (see the right side of our webpage) for our program's open house. This is the best opportunity to hear about our program and talk to professors and students in small groups, as well as see the department."
