  1. I am sure some of you are waiting on NYU's MCC MA program -- so let's wait together! I am REALLY into this program and would love to know they are just that into me too...

    New York, NY

Awesome question! Must do: Sleep No More (if it is still playing when you get here), Summerstage in Central Park, Celebrate Brooklyn in Prospect Park, open studio weekend in Dumbo/Dumbo Art Festival, the Jazz Age Lawn Party on Governors Island Must eat: Blue Ribbon Brasserie, Blue Hill at Stone Barn (!!!!!!!), Vanessa's Dumpling House, Momofuku Noodle Bar for fried chicken, Northern Spy Food Co. (especially if you get a booth, or are in for brunch), Peels on the Bowery (also for brunch!), The Beagle, Manhattan Inn (in Brooklyn), Five Leaves Must drink: The Clover Club, 128 Black Rabbit Club, The Sly Fox, Brooklyn Winery, Mayahuel (mezcal and tequila, specifically), An awesome "New to NYC" day -- head to Peels for brunch on a Saturday, then walk up the Bowery a little to see the New Museum of Modern Art. Check out the roof deck, then grab a juice at Great Jones Spa and explore the shops and other galleries in the neighborhood. End the day with wine, cheese and salume at Il Buco Alimentari & Vineria, also on Great Jones.

FYI - If you have a car, it will make the search even easier...a good friend of mine lived in a massive 2 bedroom for about $1500 in Mount Vernon for a long time, but she needed a car to get around.

Figured I'd pop in and offer an alternative to living within the city limits, especially if you are headed to Columbia: Westchester! I did my undergrad in Bronxville and commuted to lower Manhattan 2-3 days a week. It was an easy (35-40 minutes) trip and sometimes I made it multiple times a day...Metronorth is reliable and their monthly passes are fantastic. Places like Yonkers and Mount Vernon are CHEAP and some neighborhoods are very family oriented. I live in the West Village right now, but I long for the days of lower rent, even if it meant a little bit of a hike... In Bronxville, living in the little village part was easy even without a car. A quick Craigslist search reveals a recently updated 2 bedroom for about $1850, which is pretty much an impossibility in NYC and most of Brooklyn...
  5. Nah, I can't imagine they would take that kind of risk for such a small program? Either way, if I haven't heard come April I will be contacting them for a decision considering how early I applied... I can't see this as a fun MA--though I hope it will be fun--because I'm hoping it will help me into a PhD program after. The work world has done nothing for my academic resume
  6. ManhattanDreams, I just realized you meant you're headed to NYC! Regardless of whether you know about Gallatin before getting here, I'm sure you will have a fantastic time. If you have any questions or want recommendations for things to do in the neighborhood, feel free to PM me as I've been living here for ages...
  7. My application was submitted so early that they actually called in November to tell me I was missing LORs, because they thought I was applying for S12! So don't worry about it--I am sure most applicants will hear later this month, which seems to be when they usually notify. I am waiting on a handful of other programs, but my research proposal for Gallatin was something along the lines of using literature to navigate emerging posthuman and postgenomic identities. I do my work in what falls under Science & Technology Studies or Philosophy and Sociology of Science... I feel you on the long wait. The CUNY MALS deadline is April 15! I am taking that to mean they won't get back to me until June, ugh! I too went to an LAC for undergrad. I always joke about how I'm collecting vague, interdisciplinary degrees...
  8. They sent an email with a nice message, info for Albert login, but no mention of financial aid. The first orientation for new students is 4/24 and there was a link to incoming grad student FB page... I responded to the admissions coordinator re: aid and she said it would come directly from NYU financial aid. Not sure if that means I didn't get anything or if they really don't handle that stuff at the department level.
  9. ManhattanDreams, just wanted to let you know I heard from Gallatin today...yay! Anyway, I applied super SUPER early (October) so if you don't hear yet I wouldn't worry!
  10. I know a lot of area studies and other interdisciplinary subjects fall in MALS departments -- anyone waiting on these for 2012? February is going SLOWLY and I know it's likely I won't hear until late March or even early April. Let's commiserate! I am waiting on NYU (Gallatin), CUNY and NSSR.... Are you worried about being one of "those" students if you go for a liberal studies degree? Do you already have one? Let's not let the PhD applicants have all the fun.
  11. They have been notifying via email (directing people to web portal with decision, only acceptances so far) for about a week. First was Epi, then a couple other disciplines...yesterday was first Sociomedical Sciences notification I had heard of (EEP!) but you can hear more of us squabbling on the studentdoctor forums...
  12. I wish! I didn't apply for PhD yet -- looking to bulk up with an MA first before applying. BUT, with that said, MIT HASTS is THE DREAM program, so I'm totally jealous of anyone with an interview.
  13. US applicants to Steinhardt have to fill out the FAFSA. That's the only thing they have to do unless they are applying for certain specific fellowships. I'm not sure what this OP is talking about, but I don't see any form anywhere on the site. The fee you are talking about might be the application fee? Or maybe you filled out a form meant for continuing students?
  14. Ymolin, I only applied to NYC MA programs, many of them in departments that do not offer the PhD. They are all 2 years, but I wasn't looking for 1 year programs. You can see the info in my signature... I will say that the decision to attend an interdisciplinary terminal MA program shouldn't be taken lightly--it is definitely an "off the beaten path" approach to scholarship, and that you should try your best to find a traditional department that suits your interests. If you absolutely can't, then an interdisciplinary program might be right for you. It's all about finding key courses and supportive professors to help you shape your degree, because without that framework, it really is just a vague MA.
  15. That's a pretty dismissive look at a selective and well-respected program that does commonly fund students. Just because your interests fit neatly into a conventional department doesn't mean that Todamascus' are any less legitimate. A program need not offer a PhD to be a degree worth having, especially when it comes to interdisciplinary research areas. The OP was asking about this specific email, not whether you think Gallatin is a good program or not. The OP has obviously already applied if they were afraid it was a rejection, so your rude response serves no purpose. Todamascus, if it helps any, I didn't get that email. I recently inquired with the grad coordinator at Gallatin to confirm the receipt of my supporting materials, but have not heard otherwise.
  16. You are definitely right to think that an interdisciplinary program might better serve your interests; however, I think that you can only really find the right program if you have an idea of what your long-term goals are. Do you plan to stay in the academy or do you want to go on to work in a conventionally professional field? Do you plan to apply to terminal MA programs or PhD programs or both? Do you have an idea of what your thesis might be? That last question is probably the most important, since SOP for interdisciplinary programs generally ask for a specific area or subject that you plan to focus on during your time as a student. I found that in order to meet the application requirements for true "interdisciplinary" programs (DIY curricula, individualized study) that I devoted most of the space in my SOP to what could also be considered a research proposal. I am already in at Draper, but faculty at other programs (CUNY MALS, NSSR MALS, NYU Gallatin) have all expected me to come prepared with a plan for my work; otherwise, how do they know that you are a good fit for the department? If you aren't going into area studies (Asian Studies, American Studies, etc) they want students with interests that truly fall far outside of the realm of other departments, and can be best served by taking classes in multiple disciplines... So once you decide on what you specifically want to accomplish as a graduate student, you should be able to judge what programs are right for you by looking at available faculty (will you have access to professors in your field?) and by gauging just how independently you'd like to study....
  17. FYI, to get an idea of processing time, SOPHAS just reported my application as mailed on 12/28 and it has been complete since 12/1. Technically I e-submitted on 11/22, but they needed me to resubmit a transcript.
  18. PS. I got into the program I was waiting on, but am now trying to get them to let me push to fall so I can see how other things work out...like FUNDING!
  19. I was wondering if anyone has a similar problem: I have always worked in a particular field that is completely unrelated to my academic interests. When taken out of context, I have a very impressive resume, but I wonder if AdComm people will see my CV and wonder why I have so much experience in field A if I want to study field B. I can't omit my resume from my applications, because I think it is important to show how motivated I've been since graduating from college, but it's hard leaving all the "relevant work experience" sections blank on my applications. I haven't touched on this topic in my SOPs, mostly because of word count restrictions, but I am worried that despite decent GRE + GPA, my resume will count against me... Thoughts?
  20. I applied to one program that begins in January and haven't heard yet. I submitted in early November, but my third recommender waited until the deadline to submit her letter. I know it hasn't been very long since the deadline (12/1), but if admitted, I'd really like to take the offer and the idea of registering so close to the beginning of the semester totally freaks me out! Plus, I will be traveling out of the country soon and want to be available for any administrative issues should they arise. AND I'm getting married in February, so life is already pretty crazy and knowing whether I'll be in school come January would really make me feel less panicky. Agh! Is anyone else still waiting on a spring semester decision? I can't stop checking my phone--I am so jumpy!
  21. HEY! Awesome to hear from another STS applicant...have you read any Sherry Turkle? She works a lot with representation/simulation in terms of the subjects you mentioned, especially computing. Plus, she's the head of MIT's Initiative on Technology and the Self, and I have a big academic crush on her etc etc. I think if you're willing to relocate there are a lot of great options for the field, but I'm committed to staying in NYC for a bit longer -- have you looked at Cornell?
  22. The whole system just seems really disjointed -- and they should be clearer about processing time. Like, big giant red bold letters every time you log in. If I had known that my application would just sit in limbo until they processed it, I would have e-submitted way way way earlier. I also would have been able to tell my recommenders to submit early as well.
  23. I should have planned for the delay -- I had no clue how the system worked, since this is my only SOPHAS application (other programs use embark and applyyourself) and I guess I screwed myself? Though I e-submitted AGES ago, and SOPHAS only told me last week that they needed another copy of one of my transcripts, which I then had to frantically overnight. But now they have everything and it's just...sitting there. I find it quite frustrating!
  24. UGH! Is anyone else hating SOPHAS hard right now? I had a priority/early deadline of Dec 1., but because they are so tragically slow to process transcripts, I am STILL waiting for them to mail the application. I will miss the early batch deadline because a robot website made me late! Ridiculous!
  25. DAMN that diagnostic is harsh! I got six verbal questions wrong on the entire exam, and I still only get a 164/670? That seems weird! Standardized testing makes no sense.
