Dark-Helmed Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 (edited) I've almost purchased things like this in the past. I've really taken to the Italian Sangiovese grape recently. I went "oldie but goody" tonight with an Australian Shiraz Cabernet. Ha- I actually finished a bottle of Sangiovese last night, which is uncharacteristic. Not sure what I think about the grape: bought the particular bottle as an investigatory foray. I can't say that I got anything really that notable out of it, mostly "yep, it's a red wine" but then I was drinking it while killing a box of girl scout cookies... so the sugar probably blew out my already-dicey palate. Dark-Helmed Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 ... I mean, I get that there was some action earlier, but I feel like today should have brought more news. I don't know why I was convinced it would, but I was. We're still pretty early yet. (Although, my impression is that the the timelines suggested by the results database are not as predictive this year).

I think the reason I've enjoyed it so much recently is because it's very simple. It's known for being less aromatic than, say, a Pinot Noir (by the way, a German Spätburgunder, particularly from the vineyards of Baden, comes highly recommended from this novice oenophile), but it's a very old grape with a rich heritage (its name comes from the Latin for blood of Jove, which I think is really cool). IRToni Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Don't have anything to add about wine. However, my family has a snaps distillery (is that how you call it?). My alcoholic drinks of choice thus contain considerably more alcohol than your typical wine. We do also make our own liquor from home-distilled schnaps, which I love! Regarding hearing back: It's still extremely early, I expect big things especially in the first Feb week. Dark-Helmed 1
astreaux Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Ugh, I feel bad about my life now hahaha. I've read that men can drink 2-3 glasses a night without adversely affecting their health. I seem to be doing fine in that regard. I think that Carménère is also relatively popular from South American vinyards (at least a few years ago, when I was drinking more in the jammy / spicy range). Of course, shiraz won the popularity contest, but I vaguely recall seeing a quite a bit of Carmémère from Chile. Might be a good place to look if you find you like the grape. One of these days, I'm going to splurge and buy myself a periodic table of wine poster. I have a wine map of France that's designed to look like a NYC subway map. It makes me ridiculously happy. (P.S. My bottle count is .5 for today. My husband thought Prosecco would take my mind off Wisconsin) TakeMyCoffeeBlack 1

Looks like the first two weeks of Feb will be awesome if you get in, and the last two weeks rough if you don't! I have a theory that the MIT ad com is meeting due to slight changes to their online system...

o.j. Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 Truth. Looks like the first two weeks of Feb will be awesome if you get in, and the last two weeks rough if you don't! True that. I have to be away the first two weeks of Feb, but I am dreading getting back and dealing with no news or bad news. Boo.

I'm pretty sure columbia met sometime this week too. I wonder how many rounds the adcomm meets before making their final decisions.
Dark-Helmed Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 So, Pandora just gave me "Hung Up" my Madonna. (Don't judge, clearly their algorithms are on crack! I listen to the classy stuff.) Seems remarkably appropriate.
BFB Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 OK, I've now gotten three emails from people who we admitted two days ago but who haven't been notified by the Graduate School. I am really, really sorry that some of you are being left hanging. I'll bring this to the attention of the Graduate School next week. your humble servant 1
BFB Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 My thoughts exactly. I guess I will just wait for the process to unfold. Oh and I just received intel on the hamster-powered system of the OSU: THIS. PoliSwede, mamalik, rchlm_618 and 2 others 5
BFB Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 This is true, but I wasn't actually using GradCafe when BFB was giving out details. The info I received from my POI was radically different (I guess he was just excited) from the BFB version of admissions, so I had no problem emailing him. PM me the details, wouldja? I need to be clearer about something with somebody, but I don't know what or who. Thanks.
IOGS Posted January 24, 2014 Posted January 24, 2014 PM me the details, wouldja? I need to be clearer about something with somebody, but I don't know what or who. Thanks. No thank you. Everyone was (is) professional and that is all that matters.

steedyue Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Folks, last year they reached Page 67 on Feb 5th. We are almost half a month ahead.
IR IR IR PhD Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Folks, last year they reached Page 67 on Feb 5th. We are almost half a month ahead. In all fairness, it seems we are getting results a bit earlier than last year!
boazczoine Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Could just be that they take applicant data and add it to their list-serv. I wouldn't take it to indicate anything (though I hope I'm wrong as in, they now want you, their Ph.D. admit, to be familiar with their other programs). Oh great, now I'm worried because I didn't get the email. I checked "no" as well on the MA front.

xuejia Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 So what schools do we think will be notifying over the course of the next week? Any that haven't already shown up on the results board?
Nords Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 So what schools do we think will be notifying over the course of the next week? Any that haven't already shown up on the results board? Really hoping the answer to this question includes Pittsburgh and UC-Santa Barbara
TheGnome Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I think Wisconsin will definitely come next week. Probably Pittsburgh and Iowa too. Michigan and Stanford would be very unlikely, but not incredibly surprising.
xuejia Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 I'm certainly hoping for Wisconsin news to drop. What about Duke or TAMU? Only scattered postings on the results board thus far, but based upon past results, one could be forgiven for thinking they too will soon notify.
astreaux Posted January 25, 2014 Posted January 25, 2014 Duke is early-ish too. Hopefully a few more of their decisions will trickle in before the 1st.
