Yeah, I'm totally overwhelmed with the decision at the moment, but definitely leaning toward Cali. There are a lot of moving parts, but I think Davis or SB would both be amazing fits for different reasons, so I'm hoping visits clear things up. I also really do love the looks of Iowa. Gahhh

Congrats on your recent acceptance! I've decided to bust ass for the next couple of weeks and get everything done so that I can go to UCSB's Open House on the 10th after all-- I'm in the process of deciding between UCSB and IU Bloomington, and it's really important for me to get as much data as possible. Cali is much better location-wise, but Indiana has its perks too--lol, I'll probably be posting a new thread pretty soon begging for help from you guys in making the decision  

If you're going to be there too, let's meet up IRL and say hello!

there is a poster who said they applied for a PhD in English at Cornell, but their application was forwarded to Medieval Studies.

does this happen usually? or is only Cornell?

Thank you!! And Yay! I'm glad you're going to make it out. My partner and I will both be there. We should definitely meet up! If that's where we both end up, it would be nice to already have a friend ?

There are very few standalone PhDs in medieval studies in the US, so I imagine it's not very common based on that alone. And of those that do exist, some have even more stringent admissions requirements than the PhD in English at the same institution (which is why I applied to English at Yale instead of medieval.) I'd be pretty surprised if that happened anywhere but Cornell, but also this is my first admissions cycle and I only have a BA, so I could be wrong.

I don't know about usually, but I know it does happen. One or two on my list had a checkbox for letting your app get forwarded to other departments, and one faculty contact advised applying to Medieval Studies specifically, since they can have more control over who they take in (i.e. they don't have to make room for non-medieval specialists). I know Toronto does it because they're firm about their Latin/French/German requirements, so it can be for specific things, too.

Just got my official rejection letter from UC Davis. They include a reason they don't admit you in the letter, which on the one hand I'm like "oh cool that's helpful for people trying to reapply" and on the other I'm like oof I'm taking this a little personally.

 even with a reason, it seems like it's hard to know one way or the other with these things. It's all so random, and so dependent on who you're up against, who's pulling for you, who's taking students, etc. etc.

I got one, too! I actually laughed out loud at the reason for rejection. I didn't take it personally, but I also didn't particularly see the reason for including it. It wasn't nearly specific enough that if I had been shut out this season, I could have applied that information to improve my chances next go-around. Oh well. 

Sharing with all of you this little piece of tao from one of my favorite musicians, Joe Walsh. It's been helping me keep things in perspective for years:

"As you live your life, it appears to be anarchy and chaos, and random events, non-related events, smashing into each other and causing this situation or that situation, and then, this happens, and it’s overwhelming, and it just looks like what in the world is going on. And later, when you look back at it, it looks like a finely crafted novel. But at the time, it don’t."

For those of you who are having a tough season: keep writing your novel, even when it seems like Lemony Snicket is showing up every other day, intoning why things are not going to work out how you expected or hoped. You're gonna be okay.

And @eadwacer, I know the cost might be a lot affordable than American private school but, compared to the average here in my country (about 2k for tuition and fees per year in a public grad school), it's still a huuuuuge amount of money. I'll have less struggle for my decision if I can know how likely it is for us (international students) to get TA-/RA-ship and other funding/scholarship/fellowship opportunities! (Or how to win lotteries, if that also works.)

It looked to me from their awards website/their cost of living calculator tool that that $3200 International Tuition Award was basically guaranteed once you enroll, if that helps at all. It might be a good idea to write to Dr. Kreisel, the MA Advisor who sent out the acceptances, about it. I asked her some questions about the timeline for acceptances and also about placement rates, and she was really helpful.

@imogenshakesand @chamakay, awesome! Let's PM a little closer to the date so that we can coordinate.

To answer your question, chamakay, I talked to a couple of the professors yesterday who are associated with the Literature and Mind group. I haven't spoken to any grad students yet--I'm hoping to be able to do that soon, though!

In all seriousness, it is a shame that we'll all be going our separate ways soon enough...like The Breakfast Club. 

I'd be the Judd Nelson character, because everyone else is going to move on, but you just know I'll remain here for years to come.

Hooray! Yes, let's all three meet up (and anyone else who's in at SB)!

So far, I've heard from two faculty (my POIs) and a student. I asked the DGS to put me in touch with a student, so I just heard from her a couple of days ago. You should hear from people soon, if you haven't already!
