Has it actually been over 45 days? I think the general agreement is to wait until mid March to see. But if they have reached the 45 day mark, you may want to contact them. Who knows, maybe you're on a waitlist or something

If you need other people around you to be as dedicated as you are for you to pursue your intellectual interests, you may not be as "dedicated" as you think. Honestly, so what if standards are low? You'd just transcend them anyway.

I would, but Harry Potter gets more acceptance letters than anyone, and he didn't even apply.

My Letter came today, full tuition waver and graduate assistantship! I made it! The whiskey and house of cards really did help ease the pain.

Now if only I could be like Hermione and have an owl with a letter from a top school for which I didn't even know I was qualified show up and tell me how much they wanted me. Someday my owl will come.

We're supposed to get a lot of rain soon, so maybe that would mitigate it?

Also, I may be biased for having lived here for most of my life, but SoCal isn't that distracting.

That said, it is mostly sunshine and puppies.

On the one hand, as an envious person myself, I can sympathize, especially on the romantic front. On the other hand, you're making this comment as a person who got accepted to every program she applied to on a forum where many/most people are freaking out over the possibility of getting the exact opposite result (or close to it). Does your life or your preception of it really suck so much?

Before you apply to lots of places, ask yourself the following questions:

    1) Can I afford to apply to do many places?

Personally, I could not, and could only go for 5.

    2) Do I actually want to go to all these places? Do all of these places fit with my research interests? Does living in these places make me want to throat punch a kitten?

I guess technically, applying to more than 4 places increases your probability of being accepted into at least one place. But speaking as someone who horribly botched his application process, I think you should be very selective about your programs. It sounds like you want to apply to a bunch of programs for the sake of being accepted, but that is a recipe for disaster.

I say go ahead and apply to a lot of places of you can afford it, but don't do it solely for the increased probability of being accepted somewhere. Choose wisely.

As long as honesty, trust, and communication are priorities than you will be fine. Although long distance relationships are tough, academic long distance relationships have the highest success rate. This is because both individuals are driven and understand the hardships of academia (lots of travel, school as first priority, hard [bleeping] work).

My relationship has actually flourished rather than declined. The success of that is probably due to the fact that we both communicate often and try to visit at least once every 2/3 months. We act as support systems for each, and we truly understand each other's research; this means that we have fostered a deep spiritual connection based on our love for knowledge. In that regard, we bring out the best in each other and thoroughly enjoy sharing the successes because of it. I only speak of my long distance relationship in academia because I can't assume to know anything other than my own experiences. I think the key is that spiritual connection, but the visits 2/3 months (hopefully every month if you're lucky, but most of us aren't) are to keep the physical spark complimenting and facilitating the spiritual aspect, because that's important, too.

Regardless, I think that you will have no problem as long as you make sure to keep it a priority, probably the second priority after school. Also, that you both agree to this and talk about it. That means a mature relationship with complete trust, honesty, and open communication about what you both expect to gain and contribute to the relationship. That's what a relationship demands (respect, honesty, trust, communication), and without those, you probably shouldn't be in the relationship in the first place. Good luck! <3

Psshh, countably infinite wishes. Also, wishing to eliminate the restrictions. Then wishing to be invited to study wherever the heck I want, at no charge, and then for some sort of financial support (lottery). I'm the type of guy that tries to break this game at every turn.

Well, barring cloning yourself, I don't think there are any ways around this. Anyone who does admit you must know that you, as a candidate who was viable for their program, may also be viable for other programs. I'm sure that they also understand that you, as a human being with your own agency, are able to make decisions and choices and consider a variety of factors independent of how well they treat you.

If you absolutely 100% know you would say "no" to them specifically, however, and you're wasting their money and time, you should definitely feel bad about that. They have enough trouble funding us as it is.
