  1. Oh my gosh no way!!! That's so exciting! We out-of-fielders have to have each others' backs Your stats look good to me still, I feel like we can't predict what will happen anyway. I'm sure you have great experience too since you've had some time to work after school.
  2. I'm going to be moving to a state I've never even been to and at 22 years old in a new location, yeah, I do need to form a support group and find people who are in the same boat as me.
  3. Basically- I'm talking about taking undergraduate courses vs taking them in a sort of leveling program with other grad students who are doing the same thing. At some schools if I were admitted I could possibly be the only one from out of field, and I feel like I'd struggle to take classes for a full year with people I won't get to know. Maybe that's just me but relationships are really important to me. There are only two schools I'm applying to (University of Arizona and New Mexico State) that offer both a 'leveling' PROGRAM (instead of just prereqs with undergrads) AND a bilingual specialization, but I'm not too fond of their locations so I'm not sure if I should just get over it and list them as first.
  4. Oh, if you've already done the review part where you review what classes were AP or study abroad or honors and all that, then yes it's just being reviewed! You're good to go!
  5. One of my schools (I think it was IU) said they didn't mind if I uploaded my unofficial transcript without my fall grades, they would just ask me for an official transcript with them on there if I got admitted. So for all my schools that accepted unofficial transcripts, that's what I've done because I'd rather not wait until the end of Dec. to do so much uploading. For all my schools that only want official transcripts, when I ordered from my university, they give the option to have them sent after fall grades are posted, so that's what I did. Once the end of December hits I will be making sure those transcripts all arrived. The only one I'm worried about is Marquette because the deadline is Dec. 15th but I'm not sure if I knew that when I ordered my transcripts!
  6. Thought I'd join the party, I'm also applying for fall 2017 and I'm an out-of-field applicant! I'm almost done with applications, just finishing up personal statements and making sure they're individualized for each school. Trying to be done by Christmas at the very latest but I want to be done before then if I can! My Marquette app is due Dec. 15th and I'm almost done with my essays for that one, since there are multiple, but it's taking me forever and finals are coming up so I'm worried! Best of luck to everyone I'm so nervous but I hope we all make it in. Doesn't seem like anyone is really applying to the same programs as me but let me know if you are! Anyone else going for bilingual populations?
  7. You have to manually enter all of your courses you've taken under transcript entry!
  8. So what if I get into one school that has a bilingual specialty track but it doesn't have a separate cohort for three year graduate students? Should I choose that over, say, a school like UVA that has a separate three year track and still has bilingual placement opportunities and is in a location I like?
  9. I'm currently applying as an out-of-field (psychology and Spanish double major) student to graduate programs that offer 1.) the opportunity to complete prerequisites upon admission and 2.) bilingual opportunities, whether that be through a specific certificate program or they verified that they offer bilingual placements. I obviously have no idea where I'm going to get accepted, if anywhere, but since I won't have much time and all the schools are far from me I want to have an IDEA of where I want to go and what I want to base my decision on once I know where I have been admitted. How important should I make each of the following factors in my decision? 1. Location (I'm from PA and go to school in OH, so I won't be close no matter what, but I'm thinking more in terms of where I'd be most happy) 2. Ranking (does this matter for SLP grad school at all?) 3. If they have a separate 3 yr program vs. just allowing me to take prerequisites with undergraduates (I think the former would be better, personally) 4. If they have a separate bilingual certificate program vs. having bilingual placement opportunities (again, the former would be better I think, but not 100% necessary) Thanks in advance! My family members didn't go to grad school so I'm not really sure what's most important.
  10. I hate having no idea what my chances are all my schools seem to have the same GRE range but from what I remember, normally only around 200 applicants I think. IU doesn't even release that info anywhere but I know they only accept 35 and they're one of my top choices.
  11. Do you think I have a chance with these programs to get into at least one?
  12. Hi all! I know you can't 100% accurately 'chance' someone, but I don't really know how competitive I sound overall. I just want to make sure I get into at least one school is all I care about! I want to specialize in bilingual kids. GRE Verbal: 160 GRE Quant: 155 Writing: don't have score yet but I think I'll get at least a 3.5 or 4 Psychology and Spanish majors both have a 3.9 GPA, overall I have a 3.85 Relevant experience: tutoring Latino-American kids, research assistant for a preschool study on inhibition (going to start this fall), observations right before I started college of about 10 SLPs at one location a few times a week for two months, observations of another SLP a few months ago for two days, did my own research on second language development with the help of two professors at Pitt right before starting college (it wasn't published or anything but still good experience), and this summer I was a full time camp counselor. I've also had two leadership positions in Greek life throughout college and I studied abroad in Buenos Aires, Argentina for a summer. Haven't asked for letters of rec yet but they will most likely be from a psych professor who used to be my advisor and has had me in several classes, the psych professor that's leading the research I'll be starting this fall who has also had me twice in class, and a Spanish professor that I've had like 5 times that knows me very well and who got me into the tutoring. I plan to apply to: University of Virginia, Marquette University, University of Arizona, University of Colorado Boulder, UT Dallas, Indiana University, University of Minnesota, New Mexico State University, and Emerson College. All of these schools offer three year programs for out of field applicants and have either told me they offer bilingual placements or offer a separate bilingual specialization. Thanks in advance!!!
  13. This is what I needed to hear. Thank you so much. It's such a nuisance but in the end, I will take this exam in a few weeks.
  14. Thanks so much! Just reviewing this week sounds like a great idea. I haven't reviewed my previous learned vocab in a while. And yeah, that's the state of mind I've been in lately too. I really just wanted to get in done today and I was sooooo angry in the car.
  15. That's what my friend told me to do too! I don't know if I can handle that anxiety of not studying though even though I don't want to study :/ Would it be good to just study MWF from now until the test, just by doing practice questions and studying vocab those three nights a week? Or will that be too little/too much? Thanks for your help!!!
  16. The worst situation possible happened to me today. After studying for the GRE for three months, I left an hour and a half before my exam time to get to a testing center that normally takes about 30-45 minutes to get to. Due to unwarranted traffic, my dad drove me around the city for over two hours with no luck. We never made it. I even called to see if I could come a little late, since 12:35 was approaching, and they said I had til 1:05. At 1:05 I was still 20 minutes away and there was no chance. Now I'm out $205 and pissed that I still have to keep studying because I've been looking forward to freedom for weeks. I managed to schedule an appointment for August 4th at 8am. Next time, even though it's only a half hour from me, we're booking a hotel so this can't happen again. I'm absolutely heartbroken and more angry than I've ever been in my life that I have to keep studying since working a full time summer job and studying is not a fun situation to be in. So I guess my question is, what would you suggest I do to keep studying and make something out of this awful situation? My motivation is pretty low at this point. I know I should take another practice test or two so I will, and I'm definitely going to study more vocabulary since I only got through about 400 words. However as far as math goes, should I just keep doing practice questions every day? I don't want to lose everything I just spent so much time learning. If it helps, I scored 154 M and 157 V on a Magoosh practice test. Today, I felt like I'd get a little higher on math and probably a little lower on verbal. I'm going into speech pathology.
  17. Okay thanks! If she says she doesn't have time, I should go with the SLP that I know then?
  18. If I were to ask her now, it would have to be over email since I am off campus and won't see her until December in person- is that okay? If so, what should I say? I don't have GRE scores or a SOP to give her yet.
  19. Hi everyone! I'm trying to figure out who to ask for my three LORs I need to apply to grad school for speech pathology (I'm going for bilingual in particular). My majors are psychology and Spanish so I am an out-of-field applicant applying to schools that offer 3 year programs and bilingual opportunities. My first two LORs will hopefully be from professors (I haven't asked yet). One is a Spanish professor that I have had 5 times now- she knows me very well and I have her again in the fall. She has taught me in multiple courses, including a service learning course where she heard very positive things from my volunteer site, so she knows more than just my performance in the classroom (I only have received A's in her classes). My second LOR will hopefully be from a psych professor. I have had her multiple times in class and I participated a lot and received only A's. She was also my academic advisor freshman year, and she continued to advise me on the side these past couple years so she knows a lot about my career goals and ambition. I'm struggling with the options I came up with for the third LOR. Here's my dilemma: 1) A psych professor I have had twice and will be doing research for in the fall and spring of next year. Sounds like a given, right? Unfortunately, she's going on maternity leave all next semester, so she won't see my participation in her research until the spring. I feel sort of weird asking her because she has had me in class twice, but I don't think she can really say much about my personal attributes. I also would feel really guilty asking her over email to write a letter when she has a newborn and a four-year-old. 2) My friend's mom who is an SLP who I observed. I only observed her for two days, but since she is my friend's mom and knows me more personally, I figured this is a good option to consider. I also think it's great that she's in the field, but I'm nervous that I only observed her for a short amount of time. Unfortunately, the likelihood of me getting to observe her again is slim. She lives very far from my hometown. I'd also have to ask her over email, and I'm also nervous that schools might only want professors. 3) My employer for this summer. She doesn't know me very well yet, but it's a YMCA summer camp so I presume she will know me very well by the end of the summer. I worry that she won't be able to speak about my ability to succeed in graduate school, but she could certainly vouch for my ability to work with kids, which is what I want to do. Thoughts? I'm at a loss for what to do!
  20. Thanks so much for all your help! I'm definitely going to keep adding schools to my list- University of Memphis, for example, was one of the possible schools you gave me with a three-year program and while they don't have bilingual emphasis per se, they do have a bilingual research lab. They also seem to be very into bilingualism in general, so if I could get placed somewhere with bilingual clients, I think schools like that are a great second option for me.
  21. Yeah I get what you're saying so I'd definitely prefer one of the 8 bilingual programs I have found thus far. Vanderbilt doesn't appear to have the bilingual program, and I still need to look at Northern Arizona. I'm going to email UVA and Vanderbilt and probably at some point, all of those three year programs you listed because who knows, they might be really into bilingual placements! Are you doing three years and bilingual SLP as well?
  22. So wait, are you saying that in order to become a bilingual SLP (I want to work with Latino children) I don't need one of these programs? I only need one if I want to provide treatment for children who speak a language that I don't know? So, for example, I could go to a school like University of Virginia that offers bilingual placements and learn how to treat Spanish-speaking clients, but just not learn how to treat bilingual clients in general? I know you said you don't know much about it, but if that's how it works that is news to me! I still want to apply to all those schools that have the bilingual emphasis, but if it's not needed to treat only one bilingual population, then that means I wouldn't be screwed if I was denied from all those schools and got into another one.
  23. Thanks so much for all the valuable information! Good to know about Arizona State- their website was not clear about that. I looked into UNM and you are right, they do require prerequisites to be completed before admission into the grad program. I haven't seen anything about Vanderbilt, so I will definitely look at that. I've also never heard of Northern Arizona! I see that you got into a lot of schools I'm applying to- I don't have a 4.0 like you, but I do have a 3.84. Do you think I have a chance at any of them, or is applying to more of those post-bacc programs a more plausible option? Also, do you know the specifics on bilingual certification? To me, it doesn't seem like there are specific requirements for bilingual SLPs on ASHA's website. So I'm wondering if I contacted those other three year programs you mentioned and asked if they do bilingual placements, if that'd still prepare me for a job as a bilingual SLP?
  24. Wow I definitely need to look at University of New Mexico then!
  25. Hi! I'm a junior psychology and Spanish major with a 3.84 GPA. I haven't taken the GRE yet but I will in July and I think I'll get around average, hopefully a little bit above, but I'm not that great at standardized tests (I'm studying REALLY hard). I want to apply to bilingual speech-language pathology programs, but I also need a program that has prerequisites. I think I have somewhat of a chance to get into these schools, but I'm not certain and it terrifies me how there are only 8. These are all schools with a bilingual emphasis program AND prerequisites where you do not have to reapply after taking prerequisites. Columbia Indiana University New Mexico State University Marquette University of Minnesota Arizona State University of Redlands University of Arizona University of Virginia seems to have a bilingual focus but it's in the works so I'm not sure if I'll apply there. Should I also apply to schools like these, that I would apply to take prerequisites, and then not be guaranteed a spot in the graduate program afterwards (post-baccalaureate programs)? I just feel like that's a HUGE disadvantage, especially if I don't get into the grad program, because other grad programs may not accept other schools' prerequisites. These are just programs that I know of that have bilingual programs that I could potentially do after the prerequisites if accepted as a grad student- I know that there are other post-baccalaureate programs. Florida International University Portland State University University of Texas at Austin Thank you so much in advance! I can give more info about myself if needed, I just didn't want my post to be ridiculously long.
