asking POI's or graduate office for updates
Psychologyandpizza replied to kierkegoth's topic in Psychology Forum
I honestly think it really depends on the circumstance. I was in continuous contact with my POI at one university who also happens to be the DCT, and felt that it was appropriate to email her and ask if interviews had been extended, if not yet when they would be meeting, and when their interview day would be. I prefaced this by explaining that I am currently booking flights for other interview invitations and wanted to minimize the conflict with that university because it is one of my top choices. In this situation, she seemed very excited to hear from me, let me know when they would be reviewing applications and when their interview day is planned for. This helped immensely because now I know that I can wait to hear from them because I should be notified a few days before I need to reply to another school about an interview that is on the same exact day. However, I chose to not email another school that I am waiting to hear from and have not seen results posted for because it didn't feel like the appropriate thing to do in that situation. In your situation, I would probably say to wait because (a) it doesn't sound like it is faculty you have been in contact with and (b) it doesn't sound like they have sent out invitations yet. I would probably give it another two weeks to wait and see because some schools don't host interviews until later in February. Though, I do understand the waiting game. If you still haven't heard at that point, I would suggest reaching out to the program assistant, DCT, or coordinator rather than your POI. -
It seems like many many programs are hosting interviews on the same days. I’ve been waiting as long as I can to RSVP because I’m waiting to hear from other programs I know are on the same day. I hope your interviews go well!!

I already have two interviews on the same day and anticipate receiving another one that falls on the same day. In my case, I reached out to one of the schools and asked if they would accommodate a different date or Skype interview. They declined and said they would only provide alt options to international students. I reached out to the other school and they offered a Skype interview, though I am likely going to interview there in person and decline the other one that conflicted. Honestly, I think most schools are understanding of this and try to work around it. Some schools aren’t though and that’s just how it is. I would be as open and honest as possible but wouldn’t reveal the other school or even that it is another interview - Just a prior commitment that you are unable to reschedule. I’d love to hear how you resolve this though! It’s not a problem that I anticipated having.

Fall 2018 Psych PhD Interviews (not clinical)
Psychologyandpizza replied to vallaboop's topic in Psychology Forum
For those who got interviews at the University of Northern Colorado for the counseling psychology program — did you get the sense that all of the invitations were extended? Did they offer one interview day or could you choose one of two? Feel free to PM me! Thanks! -
I posted this in one of the general forums too, but I find that people in the psychology forums are more active and respond to more posts.. So I have a question regarding interviews for counseling psychology programs. I’ve received 3 interviews so far but two of these fall on the same day.. one of the programs is one of my top choices for academic and personal reasons (my partner would have a job in that city by transferring locations through their current job), the other program is also high on my list and provides better funding, Lower cost of living, etc. Both are great schools. School A has declined me any alternatives to the interview day but School B said I can do a skype interview as an alternative (school B is higher on my list though). My question is whether doing my interview via skype could hurt my admission chances at all as I really don’t want to do anything to automatically bump me down the list if that makes sense. This is the only way that I would be able to interview with both schools... but I’ve received conflicting advice on this from different people. Any advice is appreciated!!!

For those of you who have gone through the interview process, what are some interview questions that you wish you would have prepared for, but didn’t? I’m not interested in the generic questions because I’ve begun preparing for those. Where do you think you could have improved your interview? It would be so helpful to hear what others didn’t feel so prepared for. My interviews so far will be for counseling psychology PhD programs. thank you all!

Fall 2018 Psych PhD Interviews (not clinical)
Psychologyandpizza replied to vallaboop's topic in Psychology Forum
Yep, got my rejection from Madison today but out of all my schools, it was the one that was a "reach", though I felt really qualified. I'm anticipating at least two more interviews based on pre-application Skype meetings with professors in those programs, but I don't like the waiting game. What are you doing in the meantime to keep yourself from compulsory email checking? -
Fall 2018 Psych PhD Interviews (not clinical)
Psychologyandpizza replied to vallaboop's topic in Psychology Forum
Well I’m assuming I’m not getting an interview at Kentucky then! I did get one from Denver though. I also applied to Madison, and Tennessee as well and saw that Tennessee started sending theirs out as well as Madison so not crossing my fingers for those anymore. Also applied to ASU, North Dakota, Kansas City, Rochester(clinical), and Virginia Commonwealth. Good luck! I hope you get more interviews! -

Same!! Thank you! -
Looking for the people who got phone interviews for UW Madison’s counseling psychology program? Would you mind emailing me who you’re POI is and if you know if it is typical that everyone who gets in person interviews always gets phone interviews first? Thanks!!

I had this happen a lot with my applications. I called and emailed all of the schools and they were willing to check on it and emailed me back when they found them to let me know they updated my application to reflect them. Not a big deal to contact admissions. They’re there to help you if you need it.

Contacting potential supervisor over Facebook Messenger?
Psychologyandpizza replied to AvelineHilda's topic in Applications
Definitely email. Even professors I am very close with I contact them by email when it is in regards to professional matters. It’s good to keep boundaries especially seeing as this is not a professor that you even have an established relationship with.- 4 replies

I had to do this as well. I just used my pdf program to edit the pdf and mask the old scores that I didn’t want viewed, if that makes sense.

Hi! This thread is actually for applicants to phd programs in psychology so I doubt you'll get any real feedback here!

Im in my second year of a masters program in Psychological research and have had my MacBook Pro since my junior year of high school (2011) and it still runs really well. The only time it starts running slowly is when I have many many SPSS files open in addition to large docs and PDFs, which really, it isn't often I have that many files of that size open at once. Granted, I bought mine for about $1,000 at the time and am not looking forward to the day I need a new laptop. In terms of the quality, I always say I'll probably be an Apple person for life because of this. But like everyone has said, it really depends on your preferences, program, field etc.

Clinical Psychology PhD Application (Thoughts?)
Psychologyandpizza replied to Epoh's topic in Psychology Forum
In terms of your GRE, I would say don't even consider it until you write the exam because you don't always perform the same as you are projected. Otherwise, I think your research experiences sound great ! Though I am a bit confused by which outcomes you already have and which you think you might have by application time. I would really highlight the different tasks you've been trained in, specifically different methodologies. Also, you could briefly mention your personal situation during undergraduate, but don't focus on it too much, and if you do, then focus on how you found a solution and worked through that time and came out ahead. However, most programs have GOA requirements, so you may get screened out based on your gpa unfortunately. Highlight your last 60 credit GPA. -
Hi! I'm planning to apply to phd programs in clinical and/or counseling with an emphasis in gender and sexuality studies! There aren't many programs that focus on this so I've been trying to find individual profs who are somewhat related to what I'm interested in. So excited to see someone else in this field! Im also planning to apply to teachers college Columbia! Good luck! Check out UW Madison if you're at all interested in counseling psychology because they have a few you may be interested in.

I was in the same situation you are in now. Last year as a senior in undergrad I was attempting to decide if where I should all apply... I eventually am hoping to get a PhD in counseling (or clinical) psychology, but new that my application wasn't as competitive as it should be to apply to clinical programs. One reason was because I did not have pubs to show for, and my gpa wasn't as high as i would have liked. I ultimately decided to enter a MS program in Experimental Psychology to fill the gap. So far, I have one accepted pub this year, 2 in review, and one in prep (so I'm less worried about that now). My research experience is great (mainly because I chose to enroll in the MS program at the university where i received my BS) as I could continue working on projects I had started during my senior year. Receiving a MS degree essentially in research methodology and behavioral statistics (i'm hoping) will set me up for success in doctoral programs and set me apart from other students applying who might not have that education. If you aren't sure if you will end up going to a PhD program though, and you know you want to be in the counseling field, you could look at entering a program where you can become licensed. I have seen a number of counseling phd programs that actually look for students who have went through those types of programs as opposed to experimental programs like the one I am currently in. It's a personal decision that you need to make for yourself. I would suggest looking into counseling programs listed on the APA website (i think there are 60 or so that are accredited) and look at whether or not their websites state a preference for students coming in with Masters degrees. Good luck!

It sounds as though you receive full funding working at .5 FTE. In this case the 50% isn't referring to the amount of funding you receive, but the percent of FTE you work per week. If you are still unsure I would consider emailing back to verify that is what is being communicated.

I definitely recommend a MacBook. I bought my pro during my junior year of high school, I'm now a grad student and it still works GREAT. Never had a virus or anything, absolutely no complaints. I'm a customer for life now because it literally is amazing.

I'll be applying to clinical psychology programs for a second time, but not until next fall. This year, I'll be a first year M.S. student studying experimental psychology at a state university in WI. Looking to get some input on my chances/what I should be improving on for next year's application cycle. I graduated in May '16 with my B.S. in Psychology and a minor in Neuroscience. Overall GPA of 3.44 (which I know isn't very good), however my psych and neuro GPA's are both higher than my cumulative. Hoping to have a relatively high Masters GPA to help offset undergrad gpa. Research experience: Obviously quite a bit, as that is what my masters will be in. 3+ years by time of graduation, in multiple labs (counseling psych, health psych, psychology of sexuality labs), also including a Master's Thesis. Two years experience as the Project Manager of the UW System Counseling Impact Project, which examines the utilization and effectiveness of UW counseling centers at 17 universities. Most of my presentations/pubs are in counseling and sexuality research. Presentations: Currently, I have 6 from this past year at various state, regional, and national conferences/convention Pubs: 3 in preparation, 1 will be submitted in the next month, 1 other should be accepted for publication prior to applying, the last may not be ready by my next application cycle. Internships: one in an outpatient mental health facility, another in a domestic violence program (both for 8 months each) Recommendations: 1 over the top outstanding, 1 pretty great, and my last will probably come from my thesis advisor. Other Info: I can demonstrate an ability to secure funding, as I have received research grants in the past. Also feel OK about my GRE scores, 80% Verbal, 65% Q, 81% AW, but I'm considering studying this year and retaking them next summer before applying again. What do you all feel I should focus my little free time on improving before next fall? Any feedback is so appreciated! and good luck to everyone applying!
