I agree with what has been said but I'm going to play the devil's advocate. Why did you apply to Rutgers in the first place? What moved you to do that?
-
Good question. I think this may vary by field. I remember once in a workshop I made some comments to a colleague (Ancient historian) about the sarcasm in their writing. "That's the way we write since everybody is dead", they responded. It puzzled me because my subjects are also dead, but I think it was their way of saying that what ever I was pointing out was irrelevant because it was acceptable in their field. Cronon –I think– might be more of an exception than a rule, but good eye. What I do is to keep a folder of my "favorite" articles or articles that have won a prize and try to use them as samples.

Declining a program before they've accepted you?
AP replied to TheHessianHistorian's topic in History
Yes, withdraw your application. No need to say why, or at least no need to give the real reason (you can mention you have received offers but no need to say that they took so long because they are messy). Congrats by the way.- 9 replies

I may sound like a broken record, but I use OneNote. Here is why: You can create notebooks with many many MANY tabs. I have three notebooks: Univ (general), bibliography, and dissertation. Univ general: tabs on courses (one sub page per day), conferences (one sub page per conference and sub sub page per session), meetings with advisors, etc. Bibliography: originally organized for my three exams, now it is shifting towards a more dissertation-friendly usage. Dissertation: these are actually the archival notes, not the writing. I have one tab per country, one sub page per archive, and one sub sub page per document. It is nice (lots of colors) It is easy to use, insert things, and move things around. You can insert tables wherever and they don't move everything around. you can insert images wherever and they don't move everything around. you can insert links, pdfs, etc. you can insert equations ( I don't use this) It syncs constantly You can save it as doc or pdf You can use it in Mac or windows, and you can use it online. Easy, EASY search function (this is vital for me). Hope it helps!

Moving away from school to be with SO - advisor uphappy
AP replied to turbidite's topic in Officially Grads
There are people, like your advisor, who consider academia as a lifestyle. I don't, for me it is a job. You need to decide whether you agree with him or not. Either way will be fine because it is about you and your life, but you need to be honest with yourself and your advisor about this. I know many people who moved away to be with their SO (myself included). Is it hard? Yes. Is it impossible? No. -
Summer Storage_Where do I keep my stuff during the Summer?
AP replied to HTM18's topic in Officially Grads
As an international student, I've never had much stuff because I always rented with a roommate that had furniture. But still, during summers I left boxes/my car with friends except one summer when I rented a storage unit. -
@Basura I didn't get your research area. I understand the inclination to accept the PhD offer from CUNY but I am not in a hurry to dismiss UGA so quickly. UGA is in consortium with Emory, GATech, and GSU. If you are doing southern history, landscapes, architecture,... I think it could be a good place. Again, I am missing a big piece of information here (couldn't find it, sorry).

It seems you've done sound research and it is a good offer for your current situation. Congrats!!!

$18,500 is an OK offer. I use some online comparison websites to have an idea. For example, when I moved to California I had no idea what everybody meant by 'expensive'. Was it the taxes? Rent? Gas? Now, $2000 for the summer is not much if they are giving you $2000/month during the academic year. How would you pay rent? Eat? Think about these things. In my case, I got a part-time job during the summer. Did you ask if summer and conference travel is competitive? (i.e. not guaranteed?)

Imposter syndrome is more common than you think. I had it for real when I began writing my dissertation. I would just stare at the blank page on the screen tryin to figure out why the heck they picked me if I cannot write. I have friends that are having job interviews and campus visits and they come with that feeling: "they think I am so great, they don't know that I'm just a regular applicant". Right now, the most important thing you can is develop some techniques so that it doesn't hinder your enjoying recruitment.

Graduate recruitment event @University of Minnesota Twin Cities
AP replied to LAKSHYA GANGWAR's topic in Meet and Greet
Call the consulate, but I doubt that in the context of the state department a recruitment weekend counts as an emergency. -
When I applied (five years ago), I heard from Princeton and Harvard around mid-February, maybe the 15th?

Have you tried subscribing to H-Net? -
I love how the forum sparks this time of the year. Here I'm applying for completion fellowships. So my stress level is similar to yours in the sense that the rest of my life depends on this moment. If I don't get funding, I can't finish. By all means, congratulations to those admitted! And if you have happy thoughts, send them to my selection committees way so they give me the money!

Is Master's thesis important in PhD application
AP replied to Ninolegos's question in Questions and Answers
In the humanities at least, you can use/polish the thesis to fulfill the requirements of the WS. Mine was ok, but got a lower grade than I deserved and I still got in. -
It varies from program to program, which explains why you haven't received any information yet. Until April (rarely, but possible) you can still hear from schools. If you are interested in a particular school and program, I suggest you search in the results search bar.
-
There is no need. You could contact the Program Coordinator, but it does not seem useful after submission unless your POI or the AdComm requested this information.

This is super important for all areas of of work. I have an external drive and the cloud and some items in the school's cloud. For notes, I use OneNotes, which saves to your laptop and syncs to the cloud.

Easiest way to find out TT placement rate for PhD programs?
AP replied to TheHessianHistorian's topic in History
Check their websites. That's the only place you have department-to-TT information, if they are willing to publish it.- 8 replies

Pros & Cons of a Mentor w/ Exactly the Same Specialty as You?
AP replied to TheHessianHistorian's topic in History
What about having multiple mentors? One that specializes in German social history, one in (European) micro history, and one in gender studies? You could build better networks across fields with the possibility of speaking to a larger pool of scholars. -
I am self-citing myself from another post here: Begin with three literature reviews and write a summary of the book in your own words. Identify big themes (race, ethnicity, immigration, etc) and how your can use the book for what question. Jot down the table of contents Skim through notes and index to have an idea of what sources/archives the author uses, who they are engaging with, and what is the main focus in that big theme (e.g.: immigration in the Caribbean because you spotted Cuba, Jamaica, and Haiti). Read intro and take notes of main argument and chapters synopsis. Read one chapter (at this point you should have enough information to choose) Read conclusion.

Don't. You won't 'convince' them. Professors are dealing with a million things in any one day, Admissions being one of them. Your e-mail would not be seen in any positive light.

It means what they say: your application was not a good fit for their program but they still think it might have a shot elsewhere on campus given your interests, your background, and the whole package.
