What school are you going to? Unfortunately I received 2 rejections and 2 waitlists. I have one acceptance, sent out one more app this week and debating to send more since the waitlist schools haven't updated me. I'm not sure how much I want to go where I've been accepted. The deposit is due next week. My interests are not well-defined yet so I applied to a variety of programs. At my accepted school, insurance is $1265 per semester. For the full year, it would cover August 1st to July 31st the next year. I'm 25 so I don't need insurance in fall. In January I will turn 26 and need coverage. $1265/7 months is $180 a month. I have seen insurance plans on the healthcare marketplace for anywhere from $150 to $500 a month.

I almost applied there. I was interested in the program but she advised me not to apply yet since I didn't have research experience and it would be a 5-year commitment to research. I also emailed one of the current students and she wrote back to me. You could do that too.

ugh I am really torn about UChicago. I think it's an awesome school and my uncle went to Booth but I just don't want to live in Chi!

I second this. My friend lives there and I can only surmise the reason why is because they are cheap and close to campus. Once I slept over there after we went to bars and it isn't nice. Remember when it's cheap, sometimes you get what you pay for! And also @esotericish Odum Village was nicknamed "scrotum" village when I went to UNC lol. I have been to those apartments and I don't think they're really any better than dorms. A lot of new places have sprung up in Chapel Hill like Shortbread Lofts or Lux.

sorry I just saw this. You know your program director might also be able to help you. I would find properties and ask her if it was good or not. I lived on Symphony Rd. It's closer to Northeastern, but my program was on med campus and Symphony was closer to the med campus. I don't know where your program is. My realtor's name was Hasan Katerji with Boston Off-Campus. I wasn't exactly thrilled with them because it was a 4 BR and he found 3 random roommates. They were in undergrad which didn't work well when I was in grad school. Oh yeah, don't worry heat and hot water are always included up there. I forgot to mention radiators are a real pain in the ass but in winter you will be like I love you radiator. Mine leaked and I was #notpleased. I lived at 74 Symphony. It was a nice building but more roommates just means more problems. I did pay $1400 in rent in 2014. For 2015, they were going to raise it to $1475. I liked that unit because it was renovated. We had stainless steel appliances and granite and new hardwood floors. I thought that was rare for Boston unless you pay a lot. Back Bay is also a nice area or Fenway or Kenmore Square? My friend in Back Bay lived alone and paid more than me. Her building was really nice and quiet but I feel like it was older, wealthier people living there. My friend lived in the new BU apartments on Comm Avenue. I never looked into BU apartments too much so I can't really comment on them. I think they cost more than what I paid. I knew kids paying as little as $800 in rent but I'm pretty sure they lived far away. I would not live that far away. A commute like that is just annoying to me. I'm sure the BU apartments would be fine. I did not like living in Boston so I had to find a subletter. I withdrew from my program. I can't live in Boston. Maybe you will adapt better than I did. 2015 was the worst winter. Like the one when it was 2 feet of snow every Monday.

I went to UNC undergrad and I'm familiar with the area if you have any questions. I would suggest trying the housing board or I can tell you where I lived in undergrad. It was called Alta Springs. If you split rent with your husband, it would not be bad. And it has more younger professional types because you have to be 21 to rent there. I noticed professionals and MBA students living there. I messaged you about cars but I'm not selling one. Check CarMax. You can also view classifieds on newsobserver.com. That's the newspaper here.

Lol yeah I love UNC. I didn't study poli sci though! I do think it's a really good college town. And I'm sure you saw we went to the national championship in basketball. If you come to UNC, you will be consumed by basketball lol. I am still devastated by Monday night's loss. I applied to a master's there. I am from NC. UNC makes most sense for me since it's close to where I'm from and I get that in-state tuition. It would be so much cheaper than any other school I'm considering but I'm not admitted yet either. I just sent my application this week for master in health informatics.

okay now I get it. Yeah, I think that's good. And if you don't go then maybe someone off waitlist can get in.
-
Why do you have to update them if it's not April 15 yet? I guess I don't really understand your situation. But that's exactly what I would say too. I don't think they can hold it against you that you want to consider all your options. I think schools know that most people applied to more than just them.

lol what do you have against Texas? I want to move there! and honestly if you don't think you'd be happy there, then I would trust your gut and not go. Can't you just take loans out for any additional money you would need or use savings if you worked? I never want to live in Washington. I have friends in Seattle. It's pretty much cold and rainy all year, but maybe you like that. Texas is going to be hot and sunny, which is precisely why I want to move there.

which program at Chicago?
-
thanks. my birthday is in January. I will prob waive the fall semester and enroll in a school plan in spring. I haven't received any acceptances that I'm excited about yet though.
-
hey didn't reject it because I'm still on waitlist. Did you apply anywhere else? The biggest reason I see for rejecting them is the cost of attendance is estimated at $86,951. I only have one acceptance right now and they gave me $7500 in scholarship. But that school even without scholarship is still cheaper than Columbia. I think you have to determine whether QMSS fits your goals and if you would be willing to take on the debt. If you will take on the debt, then will your salary be high enough when you get out or would you try for a top PhD program?

Online Master Degree ( Math or Stat)
rack_attack124 replied to pen2009's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
oh okay. I live near NC State but I like UNC more. I think I would apply to UNC MS in Statistics if anything but I don't have enough math background right now. I'm not really working and wanted to use a master's degree to get a good job. How much math have you taken? I just registered for linear algebra at UNC summer school. UNC's statistics deadline is April 12 but I don't think I can make it. I don't want to wait another year. I'll probably just take the one acceptance I have, which coincidentally was not a statistics program. I'm also thinking of sending out more apps for schools with later deadlines. The one program I did apply to at UNC was health informatics. -
UNC statistics department

I have contacts at UNC if you want to talk to them. I also went to undergrad there. UNC is a good school and a good program. I don't put too much stock into rankings. I know the reputation of UNC since I went there. I was mainly considering UNC because I'm a resident so that saves me so much on tuition. I would recommend emailing Eric Friedlander if you want more insight on the PhD program at UNC. He's a current student and was emailing me to answer all my questions. -

Why don't you email the admissions and ask your questions? I considered NC State but I don't want online anything. Do you work right now? I don't want online because I want to meet people through school and online doesn't exactly facilitate that happening. -
Biostatistics: UNC PhD vs. Funded Umich MS
rack_attack124 replied to DBDR2672's topic in Mathematics and Statistics
I went to UNC undergrad so I would say go to UNC. I mean it's really up to you if you want to apply to PhD programs again next year. UNC and UMich are both awesome schools so congratulations!- 5 replies

I would ask to talk to current students if I was you. I cannot provide more insight because I am not familiar with the programs you applied to. I briefly considered Heinz and ultimately didn't apply because I didn't think I would like Pittsburgh!

Till when should I wait?
rack_attack124 replied to Vincent_2k's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
It's not April 15th yet. When do the program websites say that admissions notifications are sent out? Your GRE Q and GPA are better than mine. I didn't apply to PhD though. Good luck!- 12 replies

Biostat MS Vanderbilt or Hopkins?
rack_attack124 replied to yzheng68's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
I think you have to make that decision for yourself and figure out what's most important to you. I know people who went to Hopkins undergrad and they're still alive. It's true that it's dangerous. There are definitely parts of Baltimore that you want to avoid. My cousin is in JHU undergrad right now. I could ask her about it if you want. Honestly, I would not let crime deter you. Crimes are everywhere. You can't avoid them because perpetrators will continue to perpetrate no matter what kind of prevention measures you take. I also know people in Nashville. You know if you're really unsure you can just ask admissions to connect you to a current student and ask them all these questions. That's what I would do if I couldn't make up my mind. -
For people in school who are 26 or older, did you buy the school's insurance plan? I'm almost 26.
-
still haven't heard from anywhere I'm waitlisted. this struggle is too real. time seems to pass so slow and I'm checking my email incessantly. I want to send out more apps but I'm sick of spending time and money on them to not get the results I want.
-
I would worry more about if you liked your adviser or program director more than this person. If you feel that strongly, then I guess you could not go there if you have other acceptances. I would try to visit the schools too. I've applied to schools without visiting. I think visiting is better. I sat in classes with one program and didn't feel like I could relate to any of the students. They rejected me anyway but I don't think I would have been happy there.

What should I do now?
rack_attack124 replied to invokerinjoker's topic in The April 15th is this week! Freak-out forum.
I would have chosen the same. I wouldn't worry about being not professional. I did it before and applied to that same program again and they still admitted me. It's to be expected that this kind of thing happens. Schools would be ridiculous if they thought that was the only school people applied to. Most people are trying to weigh their options. It's not ideal to accept and renege but it is better to have an option than not at all. Worst case scenario you declined A and then didn't get into B either. Then what would you have? Nothing.
