  1. @Danger_Zone in my opinion the best way is to go to a country that speaks German if you can. Changing what you want to do always creates obstacles but you can overcome them if you try. If you have any savings, I would recommend trying to go to Europe. I realize that may not be realistic if you are as broke as I am. I just suggest it because in college I studied abroad in Spain and was able to learn more nuances of the language and fully immerse myself in the culture. I lived with host mom for 6 weeks and the professor at the Spanish university spoke no English. Neither did my host mom. If not, then try to find a legit German or French person. I haven't been to Canada, but it looks like you are there. I thought people spoke French there. You should try to find native speakers. They will be better to practice with than non-natives. If there are any French bakeries near you, that's a great place to find some real French people. I used to work in a French bakery. There were definitely people fresh from France but I did not pick up French by working there lol.
  2. ah, but you applied to PhD I guess? I applied to master's. There's no way I had enough research experience to get a PhD. and apparently I don't have enough research experience to get into master's either.
  3. yeah waitlist is better than rejection for sure. you're still in the game. have you been waitlisted before? Can we really expect decisions by April 15th? I tried emailing professors lol it didn't really work. They did not provide the insight I wanted lol.
  4. @Jessie Z lol yeah just checked your message and it was the same! waitlist is horrible for someone who didn't have patience to begin with lol. It's making me want to do more apps. But why is this sh*t so expensive? sending the damn GRE score is $27 every time and app fees are always $80-$100. Vanderbilt didn't have a fee and I got rejected. At least I didn't lose $100 on that one lol.
  5. yeah because I applied to programs that were reaches for me. They want research experience and I don't have a lot of it. They don't provide feedback but I guess other people had more research experience and higher GPA than me. I think my GRE score is better than a lot of people's but then again I haven't been admitted so I guess someone is better than me lol.
  6. Anyone taken linear algrebra? I have a psychology background. I'm trying to take linear algebra because I want to study something quantitative and it's a prerequisite for most places. Curious for anyone's experience with it. I would be taking it at UNC summer school.
  7. and also, I can say it's pretty hard to find housing if you aren't in Boston. If you didn't find housing yet, I would plan a trip. You don't really want to sign a lease just from seeing photos either. I would try to move before September 1st because the markets in Boston are all driven by students. Everyone will be moving that weekend and it will be a fiasco for you. I suggest roommates to make rent cheaper but a lot of apartments will have less bathrooms than bedrooms. I had a horrid experience sharing a bathroom and didn't know any of my roommates before so maybe paying more for a studio or 1BR is worth it for you. I would not live in Cambridge or Harvard I don't think. They are not very close. Kids will also live in Brighton/Allston. I don't know that area well but I didn't think it was that close. They took public buses to campus. I heard to avoid Dorchester but I never ventured there. I was on the med campus so I stayed around there. Around the med campus can be sketchy too. I never had any instances with crimes in Boston but it's not as safe as the suburb where I grew up in NC. If you ride the T, you will sometimes see some questionable characters but they won't bother you. I personally hated Boston but maybe you will like it. I don't know though because you're from the south too. It's going to be a lot different than where you're from. My best advice is get those winter clothes. Not to scare you, but in a city, you will probably have to deal with coin laundry. There are also mice. The apartments you see will probably be a lot smaller and older than what you're used to. The rent may shock you too. I felt like Boston was twice as expensive and half as nice. There is lots of good food. I could go on all day talking about Boston.
  8. Anyone has any questions, I attended a master's at BU in 2014. I would say most people in my program lived off campus. The only person I knew living on campus was an RA since undergrad. She attended undergrad at BU too. Not surprisingly, your rent is going to cost a lot in Boston. But you will likely not need a car. You can take the T or the BU shuttle. I forgot until just now I did know people who lived in BU apartments but she paid more than me in rent. Studios in Boston are going to cost you $1500-1600. Also, if you go with a realtor, they will usually all charge you a broker fee equivalent to one month's rent. I can provide the name of my realtor if you message me or give you the address of my old building. Also, since you're from Florida, I strongly suggest buying your winter clothes. It was brutally cold in 2014-2015. I hated it. You will for sure need snow boots and a huge jacket. North Face, Patagonia, Canada Goose. My jacket was from Spiewak. You have to dress in layers. I recommend hats, scarves, gloves, wool socks. Being from Florida, I'm guessing you don't have this in your wardrobe unless you go skiing on the regular or something. Housing has resources to help you find a place to live. You can message me if you have questions about good neighborhoods and bad. If you go further out, you will pay less in rent but I wouldn't recommend it. I walked to a bus stop and took BU shuttle to school. I couldn't understand these kids who lived far away and commuted 1 hour each way.
  9. @SunshineLolipops I already emailed mine. they both responded but they do not give direct info. For one school, the list isn't ranked and it will be dependent on who is admitted and their decisions to attend or not. basically someone has to reject that had similar research interests to me for me to get admitted. 30-40 people on that list he said so I'm not optimistic. he did say April 15 latest. every day seems to pass by so slowly! the other school sent some email that said I'm near the top of the waitlist and I'll hear in "several weeks" whatever that means. They did say the list is "short" again subjective. I also saw on the results board that someone else received that exact same email from the program director! wompppppp
  10. hey I missed the deadline for that program but I did apply to Columbia QMSS. did you find a job? did you take loans? is the salary you received going to be worth the debt?
  11. My friend is going to MSW at Columbia. have you found housing? @AMcCoy
  12. I still haven't heard from the two schools who waitlisted me! One said I was waitlist on March 17th. The other school said waitlist on March 29. The first school said they would tell by April 15th but I am not optimistic.
  13. I hate the GRE to GMAT conversion. My GRE score was 80th/81st percentile yet only converted to 640 GMAT. That thing is not accurate. I wish they would just judge the GRE on the percentiles.
  14. hey how did you get a 5.0 on AW? I took twice and got 4.0 AW both times! also, how did you get 168 on quant? I got 161 and it's lower than the scores of people who are admitted to programs I'm interested in! Oh, and also if you need to improve verbal, I would suggest trying to learn some more vocab words and reading a lot.
  15. I know someone in the clinical PsyD program at Pepperdine.
  16. does that mean you will have to take on debt though? I think education is too expensive in America! No one wants to be paying loans until they're 45
  17. Hey was anyone admitted into UNC master of accounting? They rejected me and I don't know why! I tried to get feedback but she really didn't say much.
  18. congrats! which one are you going to pick? Do you want master or PhD?
  19. haha I haven't been too lucky so far. did you get accepted all those places?
  20. I went to UNC undergrad. I love my school. Chapel Hill is a great place to live. I hope you like it!
  21. I think research experience matters a lot. I had a 3.40 GPA and was waitlisted from Wake Forest MA Psychology. My GRE scores are 159 V 161 Q 4.0 AW. Today I emailed the MA in psychology at William & Mary. The programs are intended for people interested in PhD programs. I'm more interested in jobs right now so these MA psych programs may not be the right fit for me. I'm not removing myself from waitlist yet because I want to see what happens. Time seems to pass so slow. He said by April 15th but what if it's later? There are 30-40 other people on the wait list. It's not ranked. I know all this because I asked. He said it was going to depend on area match so someone who denies their admissions offer has to have similar research interests to me for me to get in. I have one semester of clinical research currently. I didn't like my research because I ended up having to recruit patients. Felt more salesy than research.
  22. yeah, you are really opposite of me. I am dramatic with weather. I actually lived in Boston for a master's program. I withdrew, not because of weather, but it definitely didn't help my circumstances. I cry when I see snow. I also cried because I was failing. I think people fail when they are not passionate about what they are studying. I think if you are passionate about logic then you will do well. My adviser and program director at BU were always very supportive and I think faculty is experienced in dealing with students who struggle about more things than just academics.
  23. that explains a lot. I have lived in Florida, North Carolina, and Arizona. I like hot, sunny places so I thought it would just be a waste for me to apply to CMU. Since you're form Michigan, I can see why winter doesn't bother you. I also was considering some programs at Ross but I knew that anywhere in the midwest was off the table for me lol. Congrats on CMU! Hope you enjoy it!
  24. which program are you going to? Also, why did you apply to Carnegie Mellon? I briefly dated a guy who went there but he lived in NYC at the time we were dating. I was considering a program at CMU, but I got too scared to apply because of winter. Did you like Pittsburgh when you visited? My friend says that Pittsburgh is pretty rad!
