  4. I had 10 people look at mine as well with a process similar to @hopefulPhD2017 and still ended up with a typo!! One misplaced "I" If 11 people (including myself) didn't notice it, I'm hoping the ad comm readers won't, either! Luckily the typo was in only 2 of my 7 applications and I found it before sending out the rest. I was feeling pretty bad about it. Still I felt pretty bad about it until the school that I submitted the typo SOP sent out a mass email with a glaring typo in it I've seen numerous typos in school websites and mass emails, hoping school's will cut us all some slack. My friend found a typo in her SOP and still got admissions from 3+ English Literature programs it'll be okay (I hope)

  8. @fuzzylogician Sorry if I spread bad advice - Yes, I would not advise people do this in general - this particular professor is a bit notorious and to get anything at all done with him he needs to be hounded, not just with letters. People told me to sit him down and wait until he uploaded everything- which I couldn't do. Pretty special case, and again, premised on the fact that I know him and his work ethic+personality really well.
  9. Welcome! I so know what you feel about the level of stress shooting up with January. I was actually feeling pretty relaxed around the end of December knowing that nothing would be happening most likely. I just realized that it's the first working day of Jan soon (I'm in a time zone that's ahead by almost a day) and feeling really anxious. How low is abysmally low, though? My quant score didn't even reach the 40% percentile. I took the test twice because the first time, I scored 143 quant and that wasn't even 15%. From what I've seen so far, GRE averages weren't as high as I expected so that made me feel a lot better. I think at this point, we're all feeling a bit inadequate.. Sometimes I feel pretty confident but most days, I feel like I have the worst application portfolio EVER in the history of grad schools. @av2010 Thanks for that, I really worked hard to get my story to look coherent and relevant.. we'll see!
  10. I see you're still waiting for your LoR - hang in there. Professors seem to be VERY well aware that admissions committees give letter writers quite a bit of leeway and milk this for everything it's worth. One of the schools I contacted regarding the late letter said they were willing to wait until the end of Dec (the letter was due on the 15th) so if you really feel nervous, shoot them an email and ask if there's a very absolute last day. Also, I basically stalked my professor for a month - sent him text messages, emails and the online reminders as well. I sent the online reminders almost daily as the deadlines approached and texted him twice on the day of the deadline. After the deadline passed, I stopped by his office once a day. The third time I did this, he finally uploaded a big chunk of the letters. I have known him a LONG time and worked with him closely so I knew that doing all this wouldn't offend him. I did not, however, contact him on Xmas or NY because 1)I felt bad, and 2) didn't think he'd actually sit down and work on those days anyway. Since your letter writer isn't technically late yet, I think you can really start hounding her once she is. If it makes you feel better, a friend of mine who applied last year (with the same letter writer as mine) said that schools were even more flexible than she had expected. Good luck!!

  13. I'm not familiar with this program but saw a forum specifically titled speech language pathology under professional programs, you might get better feedback there.
  14. I'd be happy to look as well, but after having had 10 people look at mine, I realized that after a certain point, the principle of diminishing returns kicks in. That being said, if you want, just pm me!
  15. @av2010 I double majored in Lit and Poli Sci in undergrad and got my MA in Environmental policy and worked for a while in the field and returned to grad school to get my MA in English Literature thinking that's what I wanted to do. I realized then that I was more interested in context rather than the text itself. Compared to my peers, I also found I was more of a social science person than a lit critic. After a lot of soul searching and research, I found that the type of research and analysis I was interested in was coming out of Communication. At first, I thought I'd do what you did and split my applications between English and Communication, but the more I looked into the different programs, I found that Comm was a better fit. So while I'm happy I found programs and faculty that I'm excited about, this whole happenstance type process I've gone through has left me a bit unsure about what ad comms will think of me and my random looking background.....

  21. Samsonite has some work-worthy backpacks for laptops and other stuff that works for women. I found one that looked good with a pantsuit Mandarina Duck has some nice, not-studenty bags and Tumi as well, but these are a bit more pricey. Perhaps worth the investment... Have fun shopping!
