University of the Pacific - Cost
plume replied to SLPHopeful80's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Thank for starting this thread. I was also offered admission to the 24-month program. Could anyone give some more info about the program? Positives and negatives? The location and cost is making me unsure about it, and I have been accepted to another accelerated program. But any feedback would be appreciated!- 15 replies

SLP MA Program that accepts Lower GPA?
plume replied to SLPtalk's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
My cumulative GPA is a 3.3, and you can see where I was accepted in my signature. My quant GRE score was terrible, and my verbal was pretty good. It's hard to compare applicants though because each applicant is so different and GPA is not the only thing that counts! I would search EdFind for % admission rates and GPA ranges for schools. I also used signatures on this forum to help me find where people with my stats got in. Most importantly, since it is hard to know where you could get in, is to apply to a wide range of schools. -
They sent me an email to check my portal. Have you logged into your portal recently? I'm not sure if they admit/reject in waves... maybe they do!

It's kind of a made-up title that they give us - no certification required. I think it's okay because we're not "pathologists." We go through a phonemic awareness training program before starting, but that's it. I feel like it must be like being an SLPA, but maybe with less supervision at times (I'm not sure if that's true...). Our directors are a neurologist and neuropsychologist and I have an SLP supervisor. I work with children and young adults with developmental language and behavioral disorders one-on-one. I also get to decide the treatment plan for one student at all times under lots of supervision. It's really cool because I get to see the medical, psychological, behavioral, and language pieces in play with the help of so many experts. I feel like I'm in school at all times - my old coworker who is in SLP school at MGH actually said that grad school is way less stressful than this job, ha ha. I don't think this job exists anywhere else for untrained people like me and I am grateful I found it! I don't think I could have gotten into school without it!

U of the Pacific requires $500, NAU requires $300. But these fees go towards your tuition. Are all of yours the same?

They are usually included in your admission offer. Some schools let you know about funding later. you would have to contact the schools you applied to to see if they offer funding and if it has already been distributed. Some schools redistribute funding after the deadline they give you to accept/reject their offer. If students with funding don't choose to attend, they reallocate it. However, not all schools do this.

I graduated with my B.A. 5 years ago. I switched majors from nursing to English. SLP had been a looming career idea since I had been a kid, but it took me a long time to figure out that it was absolutely the right thing - I also take forever to make decisions and have to research things until they die. I settled on SLP or OT and I somehow, MAGICALLY, found my current job working as a language therapist (after working totally unrelated jobs, like for a policy office of the Governor's Office in Utah). This is my first year applying. I wasn't even going to apply because of my GPA and because of all of the disappointing stories I heard around my office of people not getting in. I planned on giving it a shot but fully planned on doing a post-bacc next year. I have been taking one class at a time to fulfill the ASHA prereqs, studying and taking the GRE, completing applications, etc. after work. I am SO lucky and grateful that I got in this round. I am so ready and excited to be a passionate SLP!

What Schools Are You Waiting On!?
plume replied to speechie2b's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Yes, it's very exciting and unexpected! I am not competitive for Colorado schools either, but I had to try. I love Colorado. I never ever thought I would say this but I'm thinking abut moving to Boston! I just loved Emerson's program. But it depends on what I hear from a couple of other schools (CU and Redlands, where my parents live now). -
Oh yeah, someone told me about that! I totally forgot! Sounds convenient.

It does feel that way! If you are offered admission to all would you choose Texas or New Mexico programs? -
Where are you all thinking of moving to and where are you moving from? I am thinking I might move from Colorado to Boston. I agree, there are too many things to think about!

Mattresses are the hard part. Buying a mattress on Craigslist can be sketchy and you might have to sleep on the floor for a few days until you find one, unless you buy one new. I will probably bring my mattress, but no other furniture.

That is so not fair! I hope you hear soon (and that it is good news)! I applied for the 24-month program so maybe that's why I was contacted me already. -
I have been accepted to 3 schools so far as an out-of-field applicant with no CSD prerequisites and a cumulative GPA of 3.3. However, it is hard to compare applicants because the numbers aren't the only story of our applications (for example, I am a career changer, have obtained solid experience in the field over the last 2 years, and had a medical issue that affected my GPA). It will be impossible to tell you what your chances are but hopefully we can offer some advice! Your GPA is solid. Your experience is solid. The general advice is to aim for at least a 300 on the GRE, although higher is better. I only received a 149 on the quant section, but I think my verbal score helped me. How flexible are you on location? The midwest and south are generally less competitive. Your stats look worthy of more competitive programs, though! All in all, YES, you are absolutely competitive. Just apply to 5-10 schools (some do more, some do less) of varying levels of competitiveness. Keep in mind that "competitiveness" ranges because some schools accept a tighter range of average stats while others accept a wider range; also pay attention to % acceptance rates. It's hard to say, too, because my friend was accepted to one of the top programs in the country and did not get into some of the less competitive programs he applied to. It's hard to know what committees are looking for, but you can be smart about your application and where you apply. YOUR LETTERS OF REC AND PERSONAL STATEMENT MATTER so make sure to spend time on your essays. I know the application process is SO stressful, including the anticipation of applying. It's good you are planning early. I would start looking at where you might want to apply and studying for the GRE. Best of luck!

I know some schools send acceptances/rejections in waves, but I wish they did it all at once.... when I hear someone else was accepted somewhere I assume I am rejected but I wish they would tell us on the same day! I understand that this is a big process for admissions offices as well but I had to vent.... hmph. -
What a great program for your first acceptance!!!! The feeling is completely amazing and such a relief!

I have done one other big move like this before and have sold my big items before renting trailers or trucks. It depends if you are looking to keep all of your things, of course. Moving is expensive
-
I am struggling with the same thing. I was thinking of renting a U-Haul trailer, which would only cost $300. I am not super attached to any of my furniture since they are all thrift store finds, so I am only concerned about moving my mattress and smaller belongings. I think moving with U-Haul, even with hiring people to drive and unload, is less than $2,000.

Yes, I noticed that they notified March 7 last year... I'm hoping we hear this week, too! I'm not expecting good news, but it is my only in-state application so I need to hear from them before making any decisions. Nice, you should have a good week ahead! I feel like just knowing is better than not knowing at this point, no matter the outcome! -

Great thread! It also serves as stress relief I am waiting on CU Boulder, University of Arizona, Redlands, Appalachian State, Western Carolina University, and New Mexico State. Has anyone heard from any of these? I know one poster already received an acceptance from U of Arizona... but any word from CU Boulder or Redlands?
