  1. I was invited to interview with Emerson via email at noon today, 2/3. Not sure if I will do Skype or in-person since I live in Colorado. I will update with more information about the interview!
  2. YOU GUYS!!!! I GOT AN INTERVIEW AT EMERSON!!!! I DIDN'T THINK THIS WAS EVEN POSSIBLE!!!! AHH!
  3. @Akon Thank you for sharing your acceptance and congratulations!!! It gives me a little more hope about getting in due to my GPA!
  4. How do schools usually let us know of their admissions decisions? Email? Phone?
  5. How do most schools let you know of acceptances/rejections?
  6. Congrats @jmk!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  7. I applied to 10 schools. I would have applied to less if my stats were higher. I think the general suggestion is 5-10 schools, depending on your flexibility, needs, and background. But of course, there are many people on this forum who went above 10 or below 5 and were admitted.
  8. Oh hi! Wow, it sounds like it could go either way! Ugh, I just want to take conceptual physics.... thanks for the advice!
  9. ASHA's guidelines on the physical science prerequisite are pretty open to interpretation it seems, as long as the class is physics or chemistry. Does anyone know if I can take a conceptual physics course to meet this? I know it is dependent on each school, but I am wondering if anyone has experience with this. Thanks!
  10. Choosing faculty members could apply to who you want to do research under, if you are interested in research. I think it also provides an opportunity to show that faculty interests align with yours, and schools want to know why they are a good fit for you and why you are for them. I don't think we can pick and choose which professors we want and don't want to see, similar to your experiences in the UK. Location, clinical opportunities, and faculty focuses were important to me in choosing schools to apply to. Although I know that you can focus on any interest when you are a clinician no matter where you go to school, I want to attend a program where I can make connections with faculty members who are working in areas I am interested in so I can gain experience and be better prepared to apply to the right job later. I also wanted a school with broad faculty focuses so I could explore other areas in grad school. You can also look at how programs set up clinicals—some programs allow an externship if you're interested in working at another location, some start clinicals right away while others start in the classroom, etc. Hope this helps! FYI - I have not been admitted to a program yet; I am just an applicant.
  11. I don't know how to answer this, but I do know that if ASHA does not outline this it depends on each school's requirements, so you may have to contact the schools you are interested in to find out!
  12. I hope this isn't too cheesy for most of you, but I liked this topic from an application cycle a couple of years ago. What are your hopes, dreams, and guesses for graduate school admissions? I will start! HOPES: I hope I will be admitted to one program—any program! DREAMS: I am not sure what my dream school is, to be honest. I chose many schools I would be jumping for joy to go to if I was admitted! But at this point, I would die (from happiness) if I was admitted to Redlands (where my family is), NAU, CU (where I live), or MGH. My dream would be to have a choice of schools! GUESSES: Because of my GPA, I am guessing I won't be admitted into a program this round, and will start a post-bacc program in the fall.
  13. You guys. I waited to submit my application for the University of the Pacific until today because I was dragging my feet with the video submission. CSDCAS won't let me submit and I think it's because I haven't uploaded any observation hours. I can't find this as a requirement anywhere on their website or on CSDCAS—is it somewhere obvious that I'm not seeing? I have lots of observation hours but none were officially logged... they were just a part of my current job. Does anyone know if this is a requirement or have any advice? Of course, it's too late to contact U of P in time!
  14. Each application is separately verified. If another batch of apps were already verified, a new round will still need to go through the verification process. CSDCAS says this could take up to 4 weeks, but it's usually shorter in my limited experience. "Awaiting materials" usually refers to your transcripts—have you already approved all transcripts? Maybe you can call CSDCAS to check on this! https://portal.csdcas.org/csdcasHelpPages/instructions-and-faq/beginning-the-application/application-statuscsdcas-e-mails-and-notifications/
  15. I didn't enter department codes, and mine were received just fine!
  16. @Puffer Fish Congratulations. I know this is such a difficult decision and I have noticed that you mentioned uncertainty about the field in past posts because you have other passions outside of speech and language. It is very expensive and stressful for something you are not completely sure about. Also, I hated when people would give me a look when my career ideas were all over the place. I think it is awesome and normal to have varied passions! I hear information security is a fantastic field right now with lots of interesting opportunities - said from a friend in the field. Good luck on your next adventure!
  17. I know this isn't what you were asking, but just in case: There is a difference between a deadline of the CSDCAS application being "submitted" versus "verified" by the deadline. Make sure you are meeting the deadlines! (It takes about 2 weeks for applications to be verified.)
  18. @jmk @julianorts @meganrich14 You can find your CSDCAS GPA by opening up a submitted application (so go to Check Status, click arrow on program under My Programs, and click Download PDF). You will find it at the end of the Calculated GPA section. I'm sure there is an easier way to see it, but that's the only way I know!
  19. Portland State is very competitive. I believe Pacific is, too, but you will have to check on that. NM State assigns points based on the strength of each area of your application to make their decisions, and they multiply your GPA by two (so they prioritize this). This does not necessarily mean you can't get in, but just FYI. NAU's summer's only program is much less competitive than their full-time program (average GPA is 3.6-3.7 for their full-time). It is hard to know where to cut off your list, though! My friend got rejected from Idaho State and accepted to a much more highly-ranked program (he also had a 3.9 GPA), so it is hard to say!
  20. @Callen Nope, go ahead and submit! Only that application will be submitted and you can continue to add documents and submit for other programs.
  21. @CallenWhat kind of documents do you need to send in later? And are you asking if you can add documents for programs that are already submitted? If it's transcripts, you can use CSDCAS's "Academic Update" feature until February 15 to update grades post-submission. There is also an "Update my Application" option for programs you've already submitted to, but I believe what you can update is limited here. Many programs do require that your applications be verified by the deadline, unfortunately! They say this can take up to 4 weeks after submission for verification (but I believe I read on their website that average time is 2 weeks during the busy part of the application season).
  22. @Elska I can definitely send some specifics! I am at work today and then I have a 3-hour statistics final after work (blech) so I probably won't be able to search for those notes and post anything until tomorrow - but I will do that! When I asked CU about a medical/school focus, they were adamant that their program provided a well-balanced format between the two. Their in-house clinic is a pediatric clinic, but they made it sound like class electives and clinical opportunities were well-balanced. It also sounded like professors' research interests were pretty well-balanced. Hm, my favorite part of living here... well, I am truly a Colorado girl at heart and I love the mountains! I am an avid skier/hiker/backpacker so I guess my favorite part is access to mountains (although the front range is very busy, and so are the trails... and it actually takes at least an hour to go skiing, but that's okay!). The culture in Boulder is also really cool and there are so many great restaurants and things to do. There are negatives, of course, like how busy it is getting here, and a lot of people hate the uppity Boulder "yuppie" culture, but overall it is a very cool place to be! In terms of grad school, I think access to Denver and the beautiful campus are a plus, too! My parents live in southern California now so I will be applying to a couple of Cali schools as my other reach schools. It's too bad the best states are the most competitive, but I understand why!
  23. Hello again @Elska I live in Boulder and will be applying to CU as well. It is my total reach school, but it is my only chance at in-state tuition so I had to apply! I attended one of their open houses. I found the professors to be very helpful and enthusiastic about their program. The program is housed in one building on the edge of campus. Both SLP and audiology graduate students share this building, so they were proud to talk about the collaboration amongst the departments. I also thought it was nice that the programs had their own building. They talked about their professors' varied backgrounds and areas of interests. CU has a gorgeous campus and they generally keep up with updating their facilities, but the Comm. Dis. building is an exception - the building is very old and the classrooms I saw were not updated at all. It had a bit of a run-down feel. I remember them talking a lot about their clinical program and their in-house clinic. I remember that the clinical opportunities sounded great, and that they encouraged students to do their clinicals in other parts of the country if they wanted to, but I would have to look back at my notes at home to give you specifics on that! In terms of WRGP, I was not under the impression that this was a competitive process at CU but I do not know much about it. The professors said that about half of their students come from WICHE states, and that they are more likely to accept top applicants from these states than states where in-state tuition is not offered (because they know those students will probably turn down the offer because of the cost). So it sounded like students from WICHE states are actually given preference. Also, if you have any questions on the area, let me know! I have lived in the area (mostly Boulder) on-and-off.
  24. Thank you guys!!! I feel much better knowing that my word count for schools without limit specifications is hovering at around the same place. I feel like I got my SOP to a presentable place last night. My supervising neuropsychologist, who is an excellent writer, edited my very first draft and did not have much to say - so either it's amazing (, not!) or she had a lot going on and did not have time to edit it thoroughly. @Elska Thank you for the excellent advice! I have been out of school for a while, but am taking one class this semester and did not think to use the campus writing center! And I am going to look back at it using the advice your writing center gave you. I focused my SOP on my current job, since it is directly related to SLP and grad school. I know we are not supposed to have our SOP read like a resume but part of my essay is going more in-depth on what my job entails. I deleted my paragraph about how my interests before and in college shaped my path to SLP (I am an out-of-fielder) because I felt it was not as strong as my current experiences. If anyone thinks any of this is stupid please tell me! Thanks
  25. My personal statement is killing me! I can't get it to where I would like it to be. Has anyone else experienced this? How long are your SOPs for schools that do not provide a maximum length (mine is at 900 words.... that seems too long!)? Are you trying to include all experiences that led you to pursue speech pathology? I have read quite a few SOP examples and visited some websites with advice on this. I consider myself a decent writer, but I am really struggling with this. Any advice or tips are appreciated.
