Sorry to interject, but had a question about LIU Brooklyn. Where did you find the total cost for the program? I thought I had bookmarked the page with all of those details, but with their site being re-branded it seems to have disappeared. I am pretty set on NYMC and submitted my deposit there, but have been trying to weigh out the final costs for all programs before I officially decline my acceptances at LIU and NYU. Thank you!

I'm also a career changer, out-of-field (with 8 years project management experience), attending NYMC in the fall! Are you part of the Facebook group already? So relieved to see another career changer in the cohort

Interviews for out of field applicants?
ElKel87 replied to lacuna's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm an out-of-field applicant and went on one interview at NYMC. There were a lot of general questions like "why SLP?" but there were also some situational questions which surprised me since they are known for liking out-of-fielders and not requiring pre-reqs. I did my best to answer based on what I know about the field (not a ton) and based on my personal and workplace experience. As someone mentioned above, I think they are more looking to see how you analyze a situation and problem solve. They don't expect anyone (especially someone out-of-field) to have the perfect answer for every clinical situation at this point in our careers. I would give you the usual advice of "be yourself!" and also say to think about any situational questions logically instead of stressing about not having the perfect SLP answer. Good luck! -
I posted this in the main section of grad cafe under "The Bank" but haven't gotten a response yet so posting here as well... I'm in the process of applying for unsubsidized stafford and grad plus loans. As part of that process I need to fill out a promissory note. I started that today, but noticed they ask for my employer's information. While I work full time now (in a different industry), I'm planning to quit at the end of the summer before I start school full time. My current employer does not know that... Does anyone know if they will contact my employer if I give their info? If they do contact them to verify my employment, will they tell them it's because I'm applying for student loans (assuming yes)? I wasn't planning to give notice until after my vacation at the end of July since my last day in the office would be right before labor day.

I'm also an INFJ! And I agree, I've read that it's the rarest of the personality types, accounting for only about 1-2% of the population. I never really thought about how that personality type drew me to speech pathology, but the way you described it above is perfect. A blend of the analytical and the intuitive and a chance to help others. What a great thread!

Informative post re: salary expectations
ElKel87 replied to lily48slp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
This is a great post, thanks for sharing! I also wanted to share some of the salary surveys from ASHA (which I feel like I've anxiously read a hundred times ). The first site has a list of all of the surveys and then I pulled out the two most recent for health care and schools. They have one that breaks the school salary down into an hourly format. http://www.asha.org/Careers/Salary-Data/ http://www.asha.org/uploadedFiles/2015-SLP-Health-Care-Survey-Annual-Salaries.pdf http://www.asha.org/uploadedFiles/2016-Schools-Survey-SLP-Salaries-Wages.pdf -
Checking out the job market -- Pediatric vs. Adult
ElKel87 replied to SopranoSLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I don't know too much about the job market for SLPs, but in my Audiology class this past fall they mentioned that the need for SLPs/Audiologists who can treat adults is growing due to all of the aging Baby Boomers. What @lily48slp says above about it being more competitive makes sense to me since it seems that SLPs in hospitals, skilled nursing facilities, and private practice tend to have higher salaries than those who work in schools. Wanted to offer my two cents on your resume for grad school as well since I'm also way out-of-field and completed undergrad in 2009. I went to the ASHA Convention this past fall and was able to snag a spot with one of the resume reviewers. She told me not to bury my work experience, even though it's in an unrelated field, and recommended updating the bullet points to show what skills I use in my current role that would translate to SLP. For example, I work in project management now, so I adjusted the wording of one of the bullets to say something about how I work with clients to set goals and target milestones to hit (just like an SLP would with a client). She also suggested looking up SLPs on LinkedIn to see how they phrase their job responsibilities in order to get some ideas. I guess that all seems obvious, but once I started doing that it was easy to remove some bullets that would have been important if I was applying for another project management job but aren't really impressive or relevant for speech pathology. Also, I think any relevant research or volunteer experience is helpful and shows your commitment to the career change. I'd prefer to work with adults as well, but the only volunteer opportunity that worked with my current full time work schedule was one at a non-profit for kids who stutter. It gave me something to talk about in my statement of purpose and in one of my interviews and was a great experience.- 6 replies

I can only speak for east coast schools, but New York Medical College! I don't have a CSD background, but I graduated in 2009 with a bachelors degree in a different field and they told me in my one-on-one interview that they "prefer" people like me. Whether that means people with a different perspective or just people with some life experience, not sure. I see someone already mentioned Speech@NYU which is online. I believe LIU Brooklyn is also starting a spring semester on-campus this year or next.

I just called the CUNY Hunter SLP & Audiology Department to ask what their timeline is for sending out remaining results since the April 15 deadline is rapidly approaching. She told me they are done with interviews, don't accept without interviews and they don't do a waitlist. If those that are accepted don't accept, they just don't fill those seats. No idea if this is true for the other CUNYs, though I did a quick check of the results page from past years and I don't see any waitlist notifications posted for either of the two I applied to (Hunter and Brooklyn). Someone on here recently said that CUNY Brooklyn does interviews in April so there may still be hope for anyone waiting on them. Just thought this might be helpful for anyone waiting to hear from a CUNY before they accept another offer! Good luck to everyone!

Thanks for asking this question! I haven't heard back from CUNY Hunter yet, but will have a similar dilemma (Hunter vs. NYMC and I want to work in a medical setting) if I do get in. I think CUNY Hunter is a great school and haven't heard any complaints on here or elsewhere from students who went through their program. Do you have any loans from undergrad still? If you do, the in-state tuition might be worth it. I've also heard from someone in the field now (who went to Vanderbilt) that it's difficult to get a CFY in a state other than the one you got your masters in. So to piggyback off of what the poster above said, if you want to return to New York after graduation as opposed to staying in Boston, that's another reason Hunter might be better.
-
@Tayann1 Not a silly question! The portal in this case would be the CSDCAS site. For other schools it's the page on the school's website where you submitted your application. Some schools send acceptances/waitlists/rejections through their application site, some through email and some over the phone. NYMC notifies via email.

When do we hear from schools? (NY applicants)
ElKel87 replied to mightyslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@zurako Congrats on the Hunter acceptance! I remember them saying at the open house that there was 1 summer class (I think it was foundations of education?). Did they mention anything about that in your acceptance, what dates the course would be held, etc.? Just curious because I assume they would have to let anyone on the waitlist know before that start date if they were in or not.- 57 replies

@lee09 That's great, congratulations! Where are you leaning to so far of the programs you've been accepted to? Is NYMC your top choice if you get accepted? I'm pretty set on NYMC myself and have already submitted my deposit. The only thing that might change that for me at this point is if I somehow get accepted into CUNY Hunter because it's so much cheaper and I do really like the program and the faculty. But even then I think NYMC is probably a better fit for me. I know it sounds crazy but part of me is almost hoping I get rejected by Hunter so that I don't have to make that decision!

@lee09 Ah okay. My interview request came via email, nothing changed on the portal. So far I've been accepted to NYMC, NYU and LIU Brooklyn. Still waiting on CUNY Brooklyn, CUNY Hunter and Columbia Teachers College. I definitely empathize with you! I graduated in 2009 with a degree in a different field, so this process has been overwhelming to say the least. The NYMC interview was super intimidating because, although there were a few other out-of-field applicants there, I'm pretty sure I was the only one who wasn't coming straight from undergrad. Have you heard from any other schools yet? I wish you the best of luck! Many of the schools I spoke to said they prefer people with different backgrounds because they provide a different perspective, so don't count yourself out!
-
@lala_1 No problem! They have all the applicants wait in one classroom while completing the writing assignments. The interviews themselves are individual, which I was so grateful for as I'm a career changer/out of field and would probably not have done well in a group interview setting. You meet with 3 faculty members for about 10 minutes each. @lee09 Did you interview already? Not sure how they are sending out acceptances, but I've seen a few go up on the results page so far so it seems like they are doing it in waves. I haven't seen any waitlists or rejections yet. Doesn't hurt to call the admissions office and check! I know they are doing interviews throughout the whole month of March.

@zurako Oh that's good to know! I'm pretty set on NYMC and submitted my deposit just in case so we'll see. I'm sure NYU is a great program if that's where you wind up deciding to go!- 57 replies

ElKel87 replied to mightyslp's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@zurako Ahh okay! I don't blame you! I didn't interview at either CUNY so I'm expecting rejections (though I think I saw some people got into Hunter last year with no interview), but I'd just like to know for sure before I mentally and monetarily commit myself to another school.- 57 replies

@zurako I forget if we talked about this already, did you interview there? I haven't heard anything either, but didn't interview. I also just checked and saw someone received a rejection from Hunter via their application portal but haven't heard anything myself. At this point I'd almost rather just get rejections instead of waitlists so I don't have to keep checking obsessively!- 57 replies

Hi - NYMC was also my first grad school interview! The faculty are all super nice and personable so I would say just try to relax and be yourself. Also, this probably seems obvious, but make sure to read all of the instructions for both writing assignments thoroughly before you start. I was really nervous and messed up a few things which wouldn't have happened if I had just taken a deep breath and paid more attention. I would also recommend figuring out how much time you have to complete them and setting an alarm on your phone (on vibrate obviously) so you have ample time to dedicate to both. There is a casual group lunch and Q&A with faculty at the end of the day so make sure to come prepared with a few good questions to ask so you stand out from the crowd. Good luck!!

@slpgrad620 CUNY Hunter and CUNY Brooklyn. A small part of me would almost be relieved if I didn't get in, to be honest. I feel like NYMC is probably the best fit for me as a career changer and based on what I want to do as a clinician in the future. But it's a lot more expensive than the CUNYs so it would be a tough decision.

NYU Class of 2019 (on campus)
ElKel87 replied to languagegirl's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
@languagegirl I just got an email with my financial aid package! If you haven't called yet I would call just to confirm they have your social. I filled out my FAFSA too but they didn't have it on file until I called. -
Same here on waiting for TC! I'm also waiting for two CUNYs but I didn't get interviews so I'm expecting rejections there. At this point I am pretty committed to NYMC (and I put in my deposit since it's rolling admissions), but they don't offer scholarships the way NYU and TC do, so an acceptance with a good aid package might change my mind. I agree with all of you, I just want to know already!
