  1. @languagegirl I called them last week because I saw some people had received their financial aid package and I hadn't. They told me they were missing my social (I filled out my FAFSA in November so not sure how that's possible) so I gave it to them and they said my package would be coming this week. Haven't received it yet, and then I got that same email yesterday. Thinking I may try to call today to confirm.
  2. NYU Steinhardt sent out some acceptances and rejections as well.
  3. They are doing interviews throughout the whole month of February and March so I wouldn't lose hope just yet!
  4. @zurako Yeah, so there are 7 prerequisite courses total. I think the online courses I took will fulfill 4 of them but I'm not sure. For example, they didn't have a lab component, so not sure if that will discount the Audiology course (though we had an in depth assignment that included watching videos of the different types of tests on different types of patients). And my Language Development course was through the whole life cycle, not specifically focusing on the preschool years. So I know I will need to take at least 3 prerequisites, maybe more. I'm guessing I wouldn't start grad level courses until the Spring semester. I went to the open house and all the grad students there seemed to love the program, too! It's NYU so I'm sure it's fantastic just not sure if it's the right fit for me personally. Are you going to the Admitted Students Day on the 24th? At this point I'm pretty sure I'm going to go to NYMC, but trying to keep an open mind until I figure out my financial aid situation for all schools I've been accepted to. I feel the same way about Fridays, this process has ruined weekends for me haha. I just want all my cards on the table so I can make an informed decision. Anyway, happy weekend!
  5. @zurako Definitely agree! NYU seems like a much better program. I spoke to LIU and they said a letter was mailed with more details and next steps so we'll see. I also spoke with NYU. Good thing I called because apparently they were missing my social security number (even though I filed my FAFSA back in November) so my award info was on hold. Now that it's back in the queue they said I should receive my financial aid package in the next few business days. I asked about prerequisites, too. They told me they'd need to set me up with an academic adviser first and they can't do that until I put down the $500 deposit. Such a joke, I need to pay $500 before they'll tell me how many more classes I need to take? Those prerequisites could add an additional $40k to the total program cost! In my experience, most schools tell you what prerequisites you have left when they send your admissions letter. After all, they did review my transcripts as part of my application and that amount of money could make or break my final decision. Anyway, sorry for the rant - this process has been so stressful and expensive!
  6. @zurako Bummer about incomplete at LIU but CONGRATS on the funding at NYU - that's awesome! Those two aren't too far apart in price, right (especially with $10k at NYU)? Nope, I haven't received my NYU financial aid package yet. I saw your post on the results page about funding and was thinking about calling them today to ask about that and how many more prerequisites I'll need to take. I'm not sure if the online courses I took at Northwestern will count or not and I want to get a full picture of what I'll need to pay for the program before I commit or decline. I saw you also got accepted into the Adelphi Manhattan Center (congrats again!). Is that the one that's Sundays only? I didn't apply there but I remember researching it and was just curious.
  7. @zurako Check your portal! I just checked mine and it says I was admitted... yesterday haha. I guess not checking obsessively for a day actually paid off. Weird that they didn't send out an email or anything, I may call them today to ask about any funding but not holding my breath.
  8. I just checked my portal for LIU Brooklyn and it says I was admitted! Didn't get an email or anything though so not sure about funding, will try to call them today.
  9. NYMC and NYU both have $500 deposits to hold your seat. I know NYMC credits that towards your first semester tuition. Not sure about NYU. NYMC does rolling admissions and you could lose your spot (even if you were accepted) if the class fills up before you put down your deposit. I don't think that's all that common though.
  10. @SLPtalk I'm a career changer so I know this puts me in a different category, so to speak, but my undergrad GPA was 3.38 and I have been accepted to NYMC and NYU so far. My post-bacc was a 4.0 though and both of those schools use CSDCAS which put my cumulative GPA (after the post-bacc) at a 3.5 so that's another factor to consider. My verbal and writing GRE scores were pretty good (161 and 5.0) but my quant was nothing special (151). What year did you receive your C+ and D? Many schools I visited said that they will overlook lower grades early on in your college career if you show that you improved. So if your junior and senior year grades are A's and some B/B+ and you score high on your GREs you may be okay. I second what @plume said above. Do your research and talk to schools to see what ranges they accept. Apply in less competitive areas if you can.
  11. Hahaha I hear you! Their process is so confusing and the website is a nightmare. I went to the open house and asked if it was okay if only 1 of my 3 LOR were academic since I graduated almost 10 years ago. They told me it was fine and I submitted early. Then like 2 weeks before the deadline they called to say the admissions committee has been discarding applications if they don't have 2 academic - or at least in field - LOR so I had to scramble to find another person. I've received two acceptances so far to programs that are shorter (and one of them cheaper) so I was considering withdrawing as well, but I want to wait and see in case they accept me with a good aid package. I'm not getting my hopes up though.
  12. @SLPCeli Sounds good - good luck!!
  13. @SLPCeli That would be great, thank you!
  14. Ok glad I'm not the only one, I thought the same thing about that acceptance from TC! But I also only saw one interview notification for Hunter and I know that one is real I feel like we won't hear from LIU BK until after April 15, they seem so disorganized every time I've spoke with them. Super super nice... but disorganized haha.
  15. @SLPCeli I see you interviewed at CUNY Hunter on 3/1. How was it?! Did they give any indication of how many interviews they're conducting or when they would be sending out acceptances/rejections/waitlists? I'm assuming I'm either rejected or waitlisted at this point, just trying to gauge how much longer before I hear. Thank you!
  16. @SLPCeli Are you going to Admitted Students Day on March 24? I work full time so not sure it's feasible for me, but I'm on the fence about attending (due mostly to cost), so thinking it might be worth my while to check it out. I'd join the facebook group but I'm friends with a coworker on FB and they don't know I'm planning this career change
  17. I'm still waiting on CUNY Hunter, CUNY Brooklyn, LIU Brooklyn and Columbia Teachers College. I saw interviews on the results page for the CUNYs and 1 acceptance for TC so I'm expecting waitlists or rejections from those. I think LIU sends out decisions pretty late so probably still a ways to go on that one. Good luck to everyone!
  18. @CameronR I think people will definitely deny acceptance offers once they hear back from all programs they applied to on acceptances/funding. I know cost isn't the only factor, but NYU is a very expensive school and any financial aid offers won't come through for another few weeks. I think once the April 15 deadline passes you'll start hearing back. Also, not sure if they rank their waitlist or not, but either way it might be worth emailing to reiterate your interest if it's your top choice. I've heard from a few people who are in grad school now getting in off the waitlist after doing that. Good luck!!
  19. @StPaulCCC I think it was mainly to show that our writing skills are up to par. The content and organization of my essays was fine, at least in my opinion, so I passed the test in that sense. I just proved that I can't follow directions haha. One of my friends also suggested (when trying to make me feel better before I was accepted) that some people pay others to write their SOP essays for them, so maybe they wanted to make sure everyone could stand on their own. That seems crazy to me, but who knows!
  20. I have one that will maybe reassure people. I interviewed at one of my top choices and part of the process involved two short writing assignments to be completed while we waited for our interviews with faculty and the campus tour. I won't get into too much detail, but basically my nerves got the best of me, I misread the instructions and screwed up a few aspects of the writing assignments (not the actual content, things like how to properly use the scrap paper). Not a huge deal but I realized too late to do anything about it and it was definitely embarrassing. Anyway about a week later I was accepted by that school so it all worked out in the end! But my advice is make sure to read all of the directions for any writing assignments before you start. Sounds obvious but you'd be amazed how your mind goes blank sometimes when you're in nerve wracking situations.
  21. @bianxrose I saw a few (not many) people post on the results page that they received interviews via email at CUNY Hunter and CUNY Brooklyn. When did you submit your app? Not sure if that factors into how soon you hear or not, but I applied to both schools close to their deadlines and haven't heard anything. I have a gut feeling that I'm not getting accepted into either one though so... I also applied to LIU Brooklyn and Columbia. From what I hear they notify late, end of March or early April. I believe LIU Brooklyn also interviews but haven't seen anyone post about it yet. I don't think Columbia does. The only two NY schools I've received decisions from so far are NY Medical and NYU. I submitted my applications to both on 12/1 and I'm kicking myself now for not submitting the rest just as early! I didn't apply to any others on your list but I've seen some acceptances posted for Adelphi. Not sure about St. John's, Hofstra or Touro. You could try doing a search for them on the results page and backtracking to last year to see around when acceptances were sent out. It's not always exactly the same but at least it'll give you a rough idea. Good luck! The wait is worse than the application process in my opinion!
  22. I would if you really want to attend and/or don't have any other acceptances yet. At the ASHA Conference this year I asked a few people giving presentations if they had any advice for someone like me who was about to submit grad school applications. At least 3 different people said that if you get waitlisted and really want to attend that school you should definitely email the department chair and reiterate your interest in the program, tell them it's your top choice, etc.
  23. @SpeechLaedy Saw someone post about receiving an interview via email at CUNY Hunter yesterday. Have you heard anything? Nothing on my end
  24. @jpiccolo For loan forgiveness, it actually doesn't need to be in the same school for 10 years or even in a school at all. It just needs to be in an area of public service for 10 years. So any nonprofit (like a nonprofit hospital) or government organization (like the VA) would qualify. You can move around between jobs as long as they all qualify as "public service" and it's 10 uninterrupted years. And you need to make regular monthly payments during those 10 years. So basically you set yourself up with the income based repayment plan, which usually allows you the lowest possible payment per month, and then after 10 years (and I assume a good amount of paperwork) the balance on your loans can potentially be forgiven. The law was signed in I think 2007 or 2008 so, because of the 10 years stipulation, the first person to qualify for the program won't be eligible until this year or next. Sorry for the long winded post, I've been doing a lot of research into loans to keep myself busy while I wait for decisions Here's a link with more info in case anyone else is interested! https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/repay-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service
  25. @JcSLP The deposit amount for the school I was accepted to was in the letter. They attached a PDF of the letter to the acceptance email so it was there, too. It'll probably be in the mailed copy you receive. Congrats on your acceptance!
