2018 Speech Pathology Graduate Applicants
BeachySpeechy replied to ObsessLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I’m in the program now and everyone in my cohort heard at different times...as early as Feb and as late as April. I don’t think anyone was waitlisted.- 439 replies

Definitely try some out of state online programs. To be honest, your gpa probably won’t cut it with the CA schools. It’s really unfortunate because in any other field your stats are wonderful. Try NYU online and even CSUN online...they accept more applicants compared to their campus program so it’s less competitive. Good luck!- 439 replies

I have to disagree. I’m an older grad student and I find nothing juvenile about wanting to form solid relationships with your classmates. You will be surprised at how much you will lean on your classmates for support. Grad school is difficult on so many different levels and I honestly wouldn’t have made it through my first semester without their support and friendship. I also already have a full life but your family and current friends will not fully understand what you are going through.

CSDCAS transcript questions :)
BeachySpeechy replied to speechpathy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Just an FYI if you don’t already know, CSDCAS calculates all your classes into your gpa. A repeated course won’t replace the failed grade. Your GPA will included the failed grade and repeated grade as if they were two different classes. Sucks. -
CSDCAS transcript questions :)
BeachySpeechy replied to speechpathy's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Fill it out exactly how it looks on your transcripts. If it says “W” then mark it as “W”. I had multiple transcripts and some schools marked it as “W” 0.0 credits attempted but other schools marked it as “W” 3.0 credits attempted even though they were all the same “W” that shouldn’t affect my GPA. They told me to mark it “W” with the # of credits shown on each transcripts because the first step in verifying is that what you have entered matches exactly what you enter on CSDCAS. If it doesn’t match it will be returned to you to fix (processing time increases). Once they verify it matches, they will go in and calculate the gpa based on each individual transcript’s rules so in the end, none of the “W”s on my transcripts affected my GPA. -

Maybe she means online programs are less competitive than CA schools since that’s where she lives (which is unfortunately true)- 3 replies

Online program for bachelor's

USU’s online platform (Canvas) is absolutely outstanding. I feel that the courses prepared me well for grad school. I would highly recommend their program. -

I love it but with every program there’s going to be pros and cons...I’ve noticed most people only talk about how wonderful their program is but I think it’s important to discuss the negative things too. I’m in the summers track program so 8 weeks away from home is really hard. Plus, the work load is pretty intense during the summer since we’re packing four grad courses into 8 weeks. I almost had a nervous breakdown having to study 24/7 for two months straight. During the academic year it’s nice to be able to work as a SLPA (for money and experience). I also like that my cohort is full of experienced SLPAs and SLPs on waiver...I learn so much from them. I kind of wish I attended school in CA because a lot of the things in lectures are focused on how AZ does things...but we have a lot of CA SLPAs and SLPs that will add the CA perspective to our discussions, so I’m at least learning some of that in class from them. Overall, it’s a great program and if you have any questions I’ll try my best to answer them- 439 replies

NAU summers track and UNCO online. They both require that you are working as a SLPA so that cuts the number of applicants! Good luck!

2018 Speech Pathology Graduate Applicants
BeachySpeechy replied to ObsessLP's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I’m attending grad school at NAU, their summers track for working SLPAs. I applied to CSUF (for location and price), NAU, and Emerson (low residency program for SLPAs but they ended up canceling the program). I immediately regretted applying to CSUF after receiving an email from Dr. Tsao regarding my prerequisites. She basically said my application wasn’t going to be looked at since I didn’t complete all 12 prerequisites before applying even though their website stated that having a bachelors in CD was enough. When I asked her about it she gave me the run around, and in the end she acted like she had no idea why I was asking for confirmation. After a few emails back and forth she finally confirmed my application was on her desk for review. During this time I learned that the chances of getting in was slim to none and I honestly just wanted my money back at that point. I’ve heard that they have less than ten spots for 500+ applicants because they save most of their spots for their own undergrads. Redlands seems like a really good program. A friend of mine recently got in from the waitlist and she loves it. I also worked with a CF from Redlands and she was awesome...knew her stuff and seemed well prepared for the job.- 439 replies

Unless you’re an undergrad at CSUF and have stellar stats, skip CSUF. Save your money because that school is almost impossible to get into (and not because it’s a great program). They have around 500 applicants for 20-something spots, which mostly go to their own undergrads. The person who is in charge of grad admissions is horrible...lots of miscommunication on her part. Seriously save $100 and don’t apply there. I’ve heard great things about Redlands (not so much about Chapman). Even if it’s expensive, $55000 really isn’t that much compared to other programs out there.- 439 replies

I’m not going to sugarcoat it for you. You need to retake the GREs and get at least a 3.5, and that’s pushing it (aim for 4.0 or higher). You are applying to pretty competitive schools (ex: SDSU is the highest ranking SLP program in CA). If it’s not too late, consider applying to some online programs. Check out EdFind and find schools that accept similar stats.- 439 replies

I don’t think one or two Cs will hurt your chances too much but how much did it impact your major GPA? I know NAU uses CSDCAS so they will calculate your GPA into categories like overall, last 60, major (CSD), etc. Are you planning on apply to NAU’s full-time program or part-time summers track for SLPAs? The summers track program is less competitive so if you are currently working as a SLPA you can apply to both.

Should I get a B.A.? before grad school
BeachySpeechy replied to Cheshire727's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
You'll end up having to take the prerequisites as leveling courses in grad school..so grad school is going to take longer for you to complete and end up being more expensive. Why not take your prerequsites some place like USU or ENMU (cheaper than leveling courses in grad school) then applying to grad school. I'm also curious as to why you have picked speech pathology? You definitely want to make sure this is what you really want to do because it can end up being a very expensive life lesson if you end up not really enjoying it. -
I think it's important to reach out to your professors and ask for an LOR. Reach out to the professors where you earned an A, tell them about your volunteer work and your passion for the field...you need academic LORs. When I applied it was required that at least 2 out of the 3 were academic letters. Don't limit yourself to schools that don't require GREs, especially if you're already afraid you're application isn't competitive enough. Study hard for the GREs because high GRE scores will offset your GPA.

That's smart. That's great about the assistantship...most of the programs that I know (in speech pathology) don't offer assistantships. I'm in a sort of hybrid grad program where I spend my summers on-campus in AZ (I live in CA) but they give us in-state tuition for our summers. The rest of our classes are done online and they are giving us 1.2x in-state tuition. I know my situation isn't the norm though.

SLPA in CA / NAU Summer Track and other questions...
BeachySpeechy replied to KEIM's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
I'm in Orange County. I thought I saw a posting recently for SD on edjoin. You can always contact staffing agencies because a lot of districts now will just hire through agencies...also private practices hire SLPAs. -
When I said that it was in response to the person saying they needed to establish residency for in-state tuition. Sorry for the confusion....to clarify, what I meant is that establishing residency for tuition purposes usually involves more than living in the state for 12 months when you've already enrolled in a program as a non-resident. I think some people mistakenly think that having a lease for 12 months in a new state will be enough but often it is not. Some schools require proof other than just your name on a utility bill or on a lease. They want to see you're working (not just going to school) in their state so they will ask for tax forms showing you have been working in the state. Or they ask for proof that you own (not lease) property in the state. Bottom line is that most schools are becoming more strict on who they consider a resident. These strict requirements are usually for the students that are trying to change their residency status with their school. Hopefully that person's school is more lenient with making that change. I just wanted to let her know that it might not be that easy.
-
Most states have rules against this. If you could that would mean most students, other than freshman, would get to pay in state tuition. You have to establish residency before you start school, which takes a whole year. Maybe not the state but the schools...I'm from CA and even the community colleges here have very strict rules against this. Hopefully you guys are going to schools that will allow you to change your residency status...in state tuition is expensive enough!
-
I don't think you can establish residency while in school

SLPA in CA / NAU Summer Track and other questions...
BeachySpeechy replied to KEIM's topic in Speech-Language Pathology Forum
Just an FYI...if the school you're applying to uses CSDCAS (third-party application system), they will break down your GPA into different areas like major GPA, cumulative GPA, etc. They also calculate ALL classes, even the ones you retook for better grades...they will calculate the first grade into your GPA. Even the ones you did an academic renewal on and had "erased" from your GPA ? -
It is fully online except for clinicals (obviously haha). They start in the spring so their application period usually opens around April and closes on June 1.
