This is the Speech & Language Pathology board. Hardly any of us are going to be winding up pursuing a tenure-track position in academia with "publish or perish" pressure and a LOT of SLP positions are part-time. Even "full-time" SLP positions may only be 30 hours/week for 36 weeks/year. So yes, it is INFINITELY easier to find a position with a family-friendly schedule after grad school is over in SLP.

I'm married, no kids. I'm going to have about an hour commute to grad school, though my father in law lives 15 minutes from the campus in the event I need to stay over in bad weather etc.
My husband knows he won't see much of me on weekdays, but we know that grad school isn't forever, there are short breaks in between semesters, and we always spend Sunday afternoons prepping meals together for the week, so I'm not totally bummed about the schedule change. It's only a brief period during your lifetime together! As it is right now, three days a week I'm at work 8am-7:30pm and home after 8pm, so we're kind of already getting used to that.

Was going to share the same article, I read it this morning.
I was banking on PSLF when I first was interested in changing careers to SLP in 2015, but that's no longer the case. I was accepted to two programs so far, waitlisted at one, rejected from two, and still waiting to hear from two. Of the two that I was accepted to, one is a much closer commute (thinking about gas, toll, mileage expenses for two years!), and $20k+ in tuition less than the other program. I accepted the offer to that program (NYMC) right away. It's still more expensive than the RMUoHP tuition that I just googled, but it is in the NYC area so everything here is more expensive to begin with.
When I talked to a few of my SLP coworkers about prospects for loan repayment, one of them told me to start looking for per-diem or part time hours at a SNF or hospital as soon as I get my C's. She said that the income from one or two per-diem shifts per week at a hospital ten minutes from her house is more than enough to make her loan payment each month. She also picks up more hours there during paid breaks from the full time job to earn even more towards paying the loans off faster. This was a relief to hear!

SLP1719 got a reaction from ElKel87 in Going to New York Medical College??
Proximity to my home; I am a career changer and not in a position to relocate my household for grad school. The commute to NYMC is about 50 minutes, vs. 1 hour and 45 minutes to the other program I was accepted to.
Cost; it's $20k+ in tuition less than the other program that I was accepted to thus far.
Medical experiences; I am not interested in working in a public school setting. I am going to pursue my TSSLD at NYMC so that I am prepared for any work environment after graduation (and because I'd need it anyway to work as an SLP at the agency at which I am currently employed), but realistically I have no interest in working with typically developing school aged kids. I currently work with nine SLPs and several of them do per-diem work at local hospitals and SNF/rehabs, and they advised that if you have some experience in the healthcare setting, there are a ton of opportunities in my area to earn more money by doing per-diem or part time work.
I also like that I was accepted 48 hours after interviewing, emailed them late on Friday evening to notify them that I had paid my deposit (per their instructions after depositing), they replied at 8pm on a Friday night to welcome me into the program. And now, four business days later, I have my email address set up, financial aid application done, medical paperwork for my immunizations/records, and online access to the portal/etc. established. I like their efficiency

If I were in your shoes, I would put down the deposit to Emerson but go to Redlands instead if you get in, even if you lose the deposit at Emerson. Having a sick parent is hard...it's what has kept me close to home. I don't think that's something you will look back at and ever regret.

SLP1719 got a reaction from lee09 in Need help choosing a Pre SLP program
I took CSD pre-reqs online through SUNY New Paltz. I never set foot on the campus. It's a post-bacc certificate program of 9 CSD courses, which meant that I was able to apply for a private student loan to cover tuition for the certificate program. Once you're in the program, you get a plan of study put together for you based on how many classes you are comfortable taking per semester (including summer), and then you're automatically enrolled for the courses each term. You need to maintain a B or better in every course in order to remain in the certificate program. It was user friendly, the quality of the courses exceeded my expectations, and I would recommend it to anyone looking for pre-reqs. The department made it very accessible for students that do not live geographically near the college. I had two of my online professors write my LORs

Congrats! I'm currently going to grad school at WWU, and I got accepted off the waitlist right before April 15 last year (I think it was like the 11th). I hope you do, too!
I got in the day after after I sent my acceptance (and $300 deposit!) to another program, of course. I got lucky, though, in that they were willing to just send the check back to me, as it hadn't been processed yet. Sorting all that stuff out can definitely be frustrating!

I have been accepted to one school so far, and about two weeks after acceptance, I received a letter from the school detailing all tuition and fees for the entire two year program (including summer). This is before living expenses were factored in, but it was still... a HUGE number to look at, lol.

Anyone else frustrated with how non-transparent some of these schools are with their tuition costs?  Most of the schools I've applied to leave it to you to figure out the tuition, providing charts with fees per credits, additional student fees, etc....  Why can't they just tell us how much it will cost?  I spent an hour last week making calculations for my schools and crying (well not actually crying but you know).

SLP1719 reacted to TakeruK in Grad schools accepting people with profiles much "worse" than mine. Confused if I should even go there now?
I think this is a good time for you to learn one of the first important lessons of being a graduate student: Stop comparing yourself to your peers.
As you start graduate school, you are becoming a professional academic. Each one of us is going to go on very different paths in both our careers and our research focus etc. It is no longer logical or useful to simply compare things like GPA and GRE scores. These are only a very very small part of the decision making process. Remember that you don't know everything about these other accepted students and it is not right to judge them on these metrics only.
In addition, not everything that appears on the Results database here is correct. There is no explicit question for research experience so many people don't really put their experience here (I didn't, for example). For my field in particular, the questions you get asked when filling in the Results Survey is almost completely useless: those factors are not really going to make a big difference in the admission decision.
To answer your last question, yes, it makes sense to want to go to a school that will challenge you and will make you into the best researcher that you can be. However, no, I do not think the method you are using to judge the school is fair. You should not judge the school by the other people they accept especially if you do not know all the details of their profiles anyways. Remember the lesson: keep the process focused on yourself. Ask yourself: Will this school provide the resources you need to succeed? Never mind the other students accepted.

In a previous post you say your stats are 158/162 and 3.36 (GRE and GPA) and that you applied for MS admission at some of the best schools in the U.S. and Canada. Honestly, you should be happy that your schools are looking beyond numbers instead getting all high and mighty.

Agreed. I attended their open house recently to confirm that this was actually the case, and no applicants will hear a decision before the last week of April. I couldn't believe it! You'd think a new program still in pre-accreditation status would want to notify applicants quickly so that they would have their first pick of great applicants in this competitive field.
