  1. Thanks for your insights! Really appreciate it.
  2. I don't think either of Tepper or Krannert would be involved in placing students for these programs. These programs are offered and managed by their respective colleges of engineering, and the role of the business schools is limited to offering half the courses. Purdue has, in addition to its career fair, a dedicated team and contracts with some companies to specifically help students from the Engineering Management program secure a co-op. At CMU, there's just the regular career fairs and grad school professional development center. Does that change your take in any way?
  3. Hi everyone! I've been accepted to the Dual Master's Program in Mechanical Engineering and Engineering & Technology Innovation Management at CMU and the Master's in Engineering Management Program at Purdue. I'm having a hard time deciding between the two. I'm a mechanical engineering undergrad with no work experience, and my short-term aim is to find a job in the industry after graduation. CMU Pros: (i) An MS in Mechanical Engineering means I have the option of choosing a core engineering sector job after graduation. The E&TIM MS would open up sectors like product management, technical consultancy, operations and supply chain management etc. for me. (ii) The brand name, plus the inherent emphasis on technology that comes with any program at CMU. (iii) Small batch size. Cons: (i) Expensive. Costs twice as much as Purdue. (ii) Has a 3-month internship component, compared to a 12 month long co-op program at Purdue. Since my primary aim is to work in the industry after graduation, I suppose a longer US-based work experience will give me an edge, in addition to better networking opportunities. (iii) The mechanical engineering department at CMU is not as good as that at Purdue. Purdue Pros: (i) Relatively cheaper. Which means I have the option to go back to my home country and pay back my education loans from there, in the worst case scenario where I don't like the US work culture at all (can't do this with CMU since the loan is much larger). (ii) As stated earlier, a 12-month long co-op internship gives me a better chance of securing employment after gradation. Plus there's an opportunity to convert that internship into a job. This co-op is the biggest plus in my opinion. (iii) Small batch size. Cons: (i) Most of the alumni here go into core engineering jobs initially, before moving on to engineering or product management profiles. This makes me doubtful as to how this degree is different from a traditional Mechanical Engineering MS degree. (ii) The school's overall reputation is a bit lower than CMU (?) Any ideas you guys might have on my dilemma?
  4. Hi! A couple of schools I applied to used ApplyWeb. Got an email from the department stating that a decision has been posted. Logged into my account and found a separate row with a pdf containing my decision below the Document Request section. If you haven't received any notification from your school, and there's nothing on ApplyWeb either, it means they probably haven't made a decision yet.
  5. Hi, I don't think you should look at March 15 as a strict deadline, in this case. An associate program director at one of the programs I had applied to told me that I should expect a decision by February 15. It's March 19, and I still haven't got any notification (neither has anyone else, for that matter). You can check on the results page to see if other people have received offers for your specific program and school. If some people did, you can mail the department and ask if they've rolled out all the results, or are they still waiting on some.
  6. Hi! Planned to submit my application to TU Delft this week (deadline is May 1st), but got offers from CMU and Purdue. Then thought why bother with writing another Letter of Motivation, and ultimately didn't.
  7. Field/Program: Engineering Management, M.S., Product Development M.S. Schools: CMU, Purdue, Politecnico Milano, TU Delft, Northwestern, USC, KTH Royal Status? Accepted to CMU, maybe Purdue. Haven't heard back from the rest of them.
  8. Hi everyone! Could you guys help me out in deciphering a message I received concerning one of my applications? I think I have an idea of what the person is trying to hint at in the message, but don't want to get too excited in case it later turns out I was wrong. I recently mailed the Associate Director of the program I've applied to, to inquire about when can I expect the result of my application. He had, in an earlier mail, mentioned that the results would be out by mid-February, but apparently, they'll not release the results for another 1-2 weeks. In response to my mail, he wrote this Based on the second paragraph, and the fact that this is a Professional master's program with no research or thesis component involved, would I be wrong to assume that he is hinting that my application has been evaluated positively? Also, as mentioned earlier, the concerned person is the Associate Program Director and not a Professor, so I guess he didn't mean that he'd like to work with me in a research capacity. This program is near the top of my list, and it would be wonderful if I really was admitted. What do you guys think?
  9. Hi _kita, thanks for your response. In that case, would I be any different from the regular applicants, because by the time the PhD results are out, the Master's application process would be well underway, if not already completed? Wouldn't these schools already have decided on their planned intake from the direct applicants?
  10. Hi, I'll complete my Master's in the upcoming summer and plan to apply for MS/PhD for Fall 2018. Just had a doubt . Are there any schools, specifically in the domain of engineering, which consider rejected or waitlisted candidates automatically for an admission to their Master's programme without having to re-apply? Also, if true, are such applicants treated any differently or evaluated on different criteria than those applying for a regualar Master's degree? Shreyansh
