brainsRus reacted to psychgogogo in Fall 2021 Cognitive Psychology / Cognitive Neuroscience
Hello all! I haven't seen a cog thread so thought I would just make one. I copied the template from last year's thread. Gook luck to us all!!
Here's a little template we can use:
School:

Date of invite:
Type of invite: Mass email, email from PI, phone call, etc.
Interview date(s):

Seems like you have a great deal of experience! Do try to keep in mind that this year's cycle is tight on funding so some schools and programs may not being accepting any students. Please make sure to double check with the program websites or potential PI's for that! Sometimes if the department isn't funding a student, the PI may be able to fund you based on their recent and incoming grants....so that may be worth checking as well. It also can depend on your research interests and fit in the lab. It looks like you're reaching high for prestigious names but don't discount schools like CUNY that have excellent researchers studying your topic of choice. (I have a friend there in the drug addiction area).

brainsRus got a reaction from k0909 in *I is stressed* venting thread for Fall 2020 Applicants
I'm really starting to get worried overall. I have one interview weekend coming up but got rejected from my top choice school that seemed like a very promising acceptance due to all the interviews and communications I had with PI/faculty/students so hopes aren't too high. This is my second time applying, though the most serious as now I will be graduating with an MA in May, and I'm scared this isn't the right decision.
I have such a deep passion for my area of study but these rolling rejections and a negative direct supervisor of my thesis have been haunting me. It's hard for me to write my thesis/do the remaining school work to graduate/teach my class I'm TA-ing for/and even begin to prep for the interview that I do have coming up since I'm starting to feel like someone else more deserving should be in that spot instead of me.
Unsure how to boost up my work ethic again. Is this what burnout really is?! I've never truly experienced it.

I can somewhat relate in the sense that I sometimes feel like my POIs would be crazy to not give me a chance to interview, and other days when I feel like I'm probably the least qualified person that applied to work for them and will never ever get into a program. I think some oscillation is normal. I think also during this overwhelming, draining process, grad school sounds...terrifying lol. Applications have already taken a significant amount of energy and time. It can be tough to stay motivated. But there was a reason you applied in the first place! I know my scientific motivation and sometimes it's important to remind yourself of your why.
Hope you can find your determination and grit and persevere! This process is literally the worst.

I don't know if it's because I'm having kind of a blah day or what, but I'm starting to second-guess my decision to apply to programs this year. There are days when I feel somewhat confident in my ability to succeed in grad school and other days like today when I think, "Am I even ready for this? Can I even do it? Why would anyone even want me in their program?" Anyone else feeling this way lol?

I currently have heard from 2/10 schools and both were positive, resulting in interviews. Still very nervous if those don't go well since I haven't heard anything from the other 8. Just trying to remind myself that no word is probably a better sign than a rejection.
Supporting everyone from afar!!

Hey guys, I'm an undergrad at NYU and applied to these schools focusing on computational disease labs: UW, NYU, Harvard, UCSF, Stanford, Weill Cornell, Tri-institutional program for Computational Biology, UCLA, UC Berkely
GPA: 3.6
Research: 3 summers at different labs, and currently working at my current lab for the past year and a half funded by an NIH training program
Hopefully I hear back for interviews soon since I know notifications are starting to go out!!

brainsRus got a reaction from PianoPsych in Fall 2020 Cognitive Psychology/Cognitive Neuroscience Applicants
I reached out to PI's starting in September/October with a personalized email template to each of them. I told them a bit about what I have been currently doing for research and expressed my interest in working with them, specifically asking questions about recent publications or saying my interests that seemed to align with theirs. Luckily with these emails I got on Skype calls with 4 potential PI's and have had great conversations that gave me a confidence boost to finish out the application season.
Here's to hoping for acceptance!

I submitted my application to Rutgers-Newark on November 27th. The PI I am interested in working with reached out to me yesterday saying she has reviewed my application and wanted to set up an informal Skype chat. We just finished chatting via Skype and she explained the next steps following our chat.
At the end of the week, PI's are required to submit a list of candidates they Skyped with to recommend to the program. It is then up to the admissions committee to decide whether they would like to formally interview the candidate or not. Interviews for Rutgers-Newark will be held in early February, and will likely be sent out early January. She said she was hoping to meet me in person. Hoping for good news ?
